Thank you so much!! So in general I put about an 80/20 split into my uni work and my side projects, at least during term time, but during the vac that normally changes to 60/40. Languages I'm fairly comfortable using include Python, Java, Scala, (I guess Haskell lmao) and SQL, and I want to be come a bit better versed in the Flutter framework (which uses Dart). I'm personally quite interested in entrepreneurial activity and as you may have guessed growing a youtube channel aha, so I would definitely say content creation is up there as one of my goals - over this summer I actually plan to just work on my own projects instead of having an internship (and most internships require you to be in your penultimate year anyway), although I did have an internship last summer at a company called the Trade Desk which was super fun!

How far ahead do you plan for? do you want to work for FAANG while pursuing entrepreneurship? I also have similar aspirations (self employed) and starting CS in September @ Southampton, my intention is to immerse myself in Software Engineer and one day create a SAAS business. This honestly is from the heart you really are naturally talented in front of the camera, I'd be surprised if you don't succeed at being a top tier KZbinr so keep at it. You're split is understandable since workload in Oxford is probably like 3x what I'll experience. @@percy9228 I think in terms of planning ahead I've kinda done a little roadmap for the next 5 years in terms of my goals, those predominantly being related to content creation aha, but it is quite a rough plan atm aha - my more concrete plan is more just to do with this summer (I made a vision board for it). I may definitely work for FAANG whilst pursuing entrepreneurial activities; I think I'll be applying to FAANG companies next year, and then dependent on my position by next summer take the internship/job or not. That's really cool you're starting CS at Southampton in September!! Good luck with your aspirations of starting an SAAS business in the future, I'm sure you'll smash it! I would have wanted functional programming in my BS in CS as a class in itself. I got a little bit of ocaml and lisp, but I REALLY got introduced to it in work with Javascript libraries like Ramda or the collection libraries in C#/LINQ and Java's Streams - unfortunately these are concepts that are welded onto the side of a language people use widely in use already. So... maybe Scala or F# would have been better for the "How will I ever use this in work" Haskell is pure, though - "If it compiles it's probably correct" and if the point is to teach you concepts... yeah. But "Here's quicksort in five lines of Haskell" is like strapping a cinderblock to your chest and jumping in the deep end of the swimming pool, especially for year one. and trying to go through Andrew Ng's machine learning course while maintaining a day job where I'm building actual products was an exercise in frustration as well. I REALLY liked my architecture classes, especially as a retrogaming geek where the Z80 and 6502 were CPUs that are simple enough to be talked about in a course. and lol good luck with Computational Complexity and that CLRS book....

Thank you!! Yep there are 3 terms at Oxford, with there often not being that much teaching third term due to exams being taken then. I think the tutorial system is definitely pretty good - it allows you to really clarify any doubts you have with the content due to a more personal connection with the tutors teaching you (although it also means you can't really slack off doing work ahaha).

Hey, I really enjoy your videos and I'm pretty sure you'll get a lot more subscriptions in the future. I'm a bachelor student in physics and currently use machine learning in bio cell physics (drug research for cancer) for my bachelor thesis. I can really relate to the calculus part. It was also one of the most difficult things in my studies, especially multidimensional integration with complex numbers. I talked to a friend who had finished his machine engineering undergraduate and he also had a course on machine learning and found it to by quite difficult. I, on the other hand, found it to be rather easy compared to my other subjects (e.g. Nucleus-, Particle-, Astrophysics, condensed matter physics). I now want to do a computer science Master called "Robotics, Cognition, Intelligence". Do you have any advise for the application? For example: were there any things besides your A-Levels that contributed to your admission? By the way, I went to school and study (at TUM) in Germany. So I'm not that familiar with the school and university system, if that would be relevant for the questions.

Yeah tbh I'm sure machine learning wd still be easier than astrophysics etc. For my application I did include a personal statement which listed a lot of CS projects I had been involved in (mostly just coding projects I had done by myself) but other than that the application process was mainly just weighed on my performance in the entrance exam and interviews. I'd say if u have interviews to primarily prep for those as generally they're considered to be the most important factor in judging your application.

Thank you for your response! There will be a process for my application which can include an interview if I don't get the admission right away. The things that will be considered before that are the CV, Bachelor grade, an essay, a written statement about the motivation for the choice of master program, and a few other things. There won't be an entrance exam. I think I should make more coding projects then and present them as you did. They are also considered for the application. There are two other questions on my mind: did you already knew a lot of programming languages before you started studying and also used them for your projects or just one or two? Do you think knowing a quite a few languages could be a critical point for an admission? Although I've used a few (Python, C#, C++, Dart, Java, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, SQL), I have used Python by far the most, as it is really easy to get started, get things done and was well suited for my projects. Hopefully I'll get the admission without the need for an Interview, but I will start to prepare anyways.

When I did CS at Oxford it was basically a mix of applied and pure mathematics, it was just after Strachey's time. It was all about 'proof' then, and to use someone else's quote 'computer science is not about computers, any more than astronomy is about telescopes'; and it also had nothing much to do with programming either (we did also zero programming) - it was all about the theory of computation, which was all mathematical reasoning at the end of the day. It's also worth noting that Software Engineering wasn't even a thing back then; that came about as a subject much later. Good Programmers don't have to be Software Engineers and certainly don't have to be *proper* Computer Scientists (the CS degree today turns out nothing like; perhaps the D.Phils are more like): We need relatively few theorists/scientists, but more engineers; who don't have to know the theoretical underpinnings. We also need more Programmers, which should work under the Software Engineers. C.f., the difference between: Material Scientists; Architects/Civil Engineers; Experienced Builders & Journeymen; Bricklayers; and Hod Carriers.

Nowadays CS degrees include lots of programming, well at least they should. If a certain university only teaches mathematics and no programming, then the graduate will not be able to get any jobs in tech as they all include some level of programming. However mathematics is very important for roles in data science, AI and ML.

1:22 Term and Semester aren't the same thing FYI. There's always only 2 Semesters in a school year since semester means half a year. If there's 4 terms such as Singapore and Australia as they use the calendar year for school, then there's 2 terms per semester etc. Oxford and even the UK has 3 terms iirc so it's not the same as a semester in your situation.

Yep you can definitely get in with 6s and 9s, although I will say Oxford priorities GCSEs a lot more than Cambridge so if you feel that your GCSEs aren't to your preferred standard then I'd definitely recommend applying to Cambridge. I scored 11 9s at GCSE but I know of many people with significantly varying scores who got in. Oxbridge does accept GCSE resits, and they also do look at the sixth form you attended to put your grades/performance into context; so if you study in a below average sixth form then that'll definitely cause Oxbridge to view your grades etc in a more optimistic manner. If you feel like changing sixth form will help a lot then go ahead and do so, but many people do get in from "bad" sixth forms as most of the application process is to do with your own self-study; a good school can only provide so much support for university applications. I found that burnout normally comes from pushing yourself too hard during a period of time, which is why it's important to establish a work schedule you can stick to that doesn't push yourself too much. Whilst you might not get as much work done in a given week say, over the long term you'll get much more overall work done if you don't burn out! This of course requires experimentation to find what works for you, so good luck with it aha. Retaking your GCSEs sounds like a good idea too! And of course all unis will take into account your sixth form contextually.

Great video! I'm currently at the end of first year in sixth form, taking the same a levels as you did. Do you think dropping A Level CS in 2nd year in order to focus on the other 3 is a good idea as A level comp sci is really unintuitive and boring and unis teach CS from the start. The coursework takes up a lot of time in second year and pursuing smaller projects on the side could be the move. Whats your take?

Thanks! I would actually definitely support the move to drop a 4th A-level and just focus on the remaining 3 - it's something I would probably do if I were to go through sixth form again. I think I personally would have dropped Physics aha as I found A-level CS quite fun, but if you would rather drop CS then you should go for it, CS unis primarily just care about Maths/FM and as you said they do teach it from the ground up. So I basically wrote about some projects I did on the side, including the chess AI I did for my Computer science A level, as well as a book I read called Computing with Quantum Cats. I will say however that your personal statement is honestly not that important aha; for Oxford for example, they care significantly more about your score in the entrance exam and interviews. In the actual interviews I had I wasn't even asked once about anything I'd written on my personal statement (I honestly doubt they even read it aha).

Sorry for replying late I was a bit busy 😅 but I'd say that the difficulty for getting a job in the US is not that much harder than in the UK, provided you're able to sort out the work visa etc hassle - at least this is what I understood from a friend of mine who's going to be working in silicon Valley. I did do an internship last summer at a company called The Trade Desk, which was actually pretty fun aha. The internship had to be done in the summer holiday - the uni doesn't give time off for internships/work unfortunately

So the chess project was smth I came up with but I did it for my a level coursework; I didn't actually do many projects outside of that and jn general wouldn't really say they're that useful - I'd say focus more on entrance exams/a levels and try just doing some simple things for ur personal statement, ie "reading" a book, "solving" problems on the euler project website, that kinda thing

The split is defo leaning more towards theory than practical - I'd say abt 75:25. Honestly when I was applying I was enjoying CS theory quite a lot which is why I chose Oxford (altho Cambridge ofc still does plenty of theory)

Thank you!!! I do quite enjoy the CS program; it goes very in depth in a large range of topics, although I would say it is very heavy on the theory side as opposed to the practical/programming side (I would almost think of it as a maths for computing course lol). I'm not really sure I can compare it to other unis globally aha as I'm not aware of what their courses are like, but I would definitely say it's a good course if you're looking to get a very well-rounded knowledge of CS!

I'm actually not sure what my MAT score was as my college never told me aha, but in terms of preparation I would basically recommend going through every MAT paper available on the website, and making sure you answer every question (excluding the maths only questions ofc). At first do them untimed and really spend the time on each q to figure out the answer, then move on to doing them timed but make sure you answer every q you couldn't do after. Good luck!

Thanks!! Most unis generally teach coding from the ground up and a degree qualification is generally highly sought after by most companies as opposed to online course certificates (which I find to be quite unfortunate as I feel you can learn pretty much everything you need for a compsci job from online courses, but that's basically how companies are at the moment) so I would still recommend pursuing a degree. You can always do most online courses in tandem with your degree of course. However, if you are interested in more entrepreneurial pursuits or want to work for a startup, online courses are most likely good enough; it's more just the big corporations that would prefer a degree.

So I basically did every MAT paper, initially doing them untimed and making sure I really spend the time on every question, and then started doing them timed. The interview questions, from what I roughly remember, were quite similar to the long answer MAT questions and not actually that much harder.

For my NEA I did a chess AI that used an algorithm called the minimax algorithm to determine moves. For a high grade in your NEA I'd really recommend seeing criteria for the grade you want in your exam board specification - for example, I did AQA and they recommended to include data structures like hash tables, trees, stacks, etc, along with other features to target an A* grade - and then focus your project around hitting those criteria and not wasting too much time on features that won't boost your grade that much. I think I picked Oxford over Cambridge as I was actually quite interested in CS theory at the time, but to be honest both the courses are good lol and you'll be able to learn about any topics you're interested in at either of the unis. Thanks! The university doesn't really give many contacts in terms of internships/jobs except from a service which allows you to directly apply to certain companies (although ie you wouldn't be able to access FAANG through that), but I haven't really found to be too much of an issue as yet. The job application process is basically just left to you to do independently.

I would say generally there isn't too much you can do to prepare for first year as you won't have access to the lectures in advance (and really you should enjoy your summer lmao), but in terms of maintaining a good work-life balance at uni, I found that working a 9-5 esque schedule works pretty well. It allows you to get all your work done (without any last minute stress for deadlines, although I'd be surprised if you manage to completely avoid this aha), and also allows you to enjoy the nightlife + spend the weekends doing what you want. There generally aren't too many interesting things going on during the daytime on weekdays anyway, so following such a schedule wouldn't cause you to miss out on too much.

Programming is the biggest hurdle most people have with CS. It takes up more of their learning time and head space than any other topic. Great resources for starting programming is Harvard CS50 Python and UBC How to Code Simple Data. Both of those courses will provide great programming foundations that carry across many programming languages.

Absolutely, a-level computer science is honestly nothing like computer science at uni aha so you would not be disadvantaged at all.

The most important subjects at a levels are mathematics, English and chemistry. With those three subjects you can go onto to study almost anything (barring languages). English would be enough to get you through law, business or geography. Mathematics can get you through physics, engineering and CS.

Thanks!! In terms of coding I would say you can definitely learn basically all of it online aha; there are loads of really good tutorials on KZbin for basically every language/framework, and websites like codeacademy that help with that. In terms of preparing for interviews/applications, once you've learnt some languages you can then grind the website leetcode/hackerrank for some really good interview question prep. In all honesty I would say uni teaches a lot of theoretical concepts that you really don't need to become a software engineer! Good luck, I'm sure you'll do great!

Thanks!! I'd say I Oxford CS the gender ratio is surprisingly 50/50 which is significantly better than a lot of other unis for cs, so I definitely wouldn't let that dissuade you from applying.
