Depending on how long he was there and where they live, the cops wouldn't have done anything. He should have still checked or have a backbone about it. Passive Aggressive actions was a stupid way to handle it. There are laws on the books to prevent self-eviction. Depending on where the OP lives and how long Mason has lived there, this could have been a problem. It takes a month to 90 days to establish residency or to invoke squatters' rights. This is why most landlords will not allow a tenant to sublet an apartment nor will they allow them to have guests who are not on the lease stay for a month or more. A common tactic in NY City is to have a rent-controlled property with a high deposit and the tenant would sublet the property thus getting a higher rent. The landlord would throw out the current tenant thus keeping the deposit. This led to the laws being in place that give tenants more rights than the landlords. The landlords would do this and other messed up stuff to make people leave the property.
