Fantastic Video Taylor I especially love how you pointed out there is so many paths I was a terrible student but always obsessed with animals and have been lucky enough to have been a zookeeper before rescuing wildlife for outback mine sites and today run my own business doing school incursions with Australian wildlife If the passion is there, you’ll always find a way to make it work :)

I’m even working at a local pet store that encourages proper pet care rather than whatever sells! Its okay for now and its gonna be really really hard to manage to start college but Im determined to do so ! no matter what it takes im gonna be a rehabilitator and educator hopefully

I hope it works out. Many colleges are very understanding for students who have to leave school because of external factors (it's not like you were lazy and quit, I'm sure) and a number of colleges also give extra credit/consideration to people who may not have been to school but have had real life experiences. And your volunteering will be a major plus since it's related to what you want to do and shows you've been involved in things since you left school. Plus, they're at some cool places (like a zoo vs. just walking a neighbor's dog).

Please do make that advice video! My best friend has wanted to be a vet or work with wild animals her whole life. She's currently at Cornell, and started as pre-vet, but wants to switch to a pre-med track because her professors told her it was too hard to get a job with wild animals and she got discouraged, thinking it was a losing track. She's been passionate about animals her whole life, she needs to keep working with them!
@melissasmith67626 жыл бұрын
Uh, why doesn't she just go for being a vet?
@ragnkja6 жыл бұрын
Jessi has said that it's hard to find vets who know enough about birds or reptiles; most vets specialise in mammalian medicine, since most pets and livestock are mammals, but there are quite a few pet birds and injured wild birds in rehabilitation centres who need vets as well, not to mention all the poultry!

I wish I didn't have dyscalculia,it's always made subjects like maths and science super hard for me from a academic standpoint, otherwise I would totally have studied zoology or veterinary science. Animals are more important to me than anything, and honestly being a vet or doing something like what you do, Taylor, would be my absolute dream come true. I just never did because I feel like I'm too dumb to even try. I understand biology science when it's being presented to me, but I've always had trouble with tests and chemistry and physics were just beyond me in high school. My brain just struggles to process science and mathematics, it's like dyslexia is for people who struggle to process language. Sucks because your story is beautiful and so what I wish my story could be. Thank you for sharing it ❤️
@calladricosplays6 жыл бұрын
AJ my dad told me that more classical zoology jobs (like what Darwin did) should still be out there. Hearing about UCSD's "Lord of the Bees" convinced me that it's true. There's always help needed in rescues and education
@ACDBunnie6 жыл бұрын
I'm good at academics, but calculus and physics are just awful to me (I'm bad at math in general) and all majors related to animals have heavy math courses. Because I'm good with the book smarts I've decided I'll just have to suffer through it as part of the path. However, for you, do unis offer assistance for people with learning disabilities? I'm guessing you're British because you said "maths". In the US they do; I think they even do it for dyslexia so I'm sure that your dyscalculia would be covered since you explained it in a similar way - that is, if they have things like Individualized Education Programs or a Student Disability Center at your uni.

Great video, I mean all your videos are great but hearing about other people's experiences in regards to animal care jobs is a big help to people like me. For most of my life I had planned to go into Paleontology but going to college I was suddenly dropped in the deep end, I had flown through secondary school and my GCSEs with very little effort and hadn't been fully prepared for what college level exams and coursework were like. I also struggled with researching and writing a paper, granted it was on a subject I wasn't super into, but it meant I would have struggled if I went on to university and a career in Paleontology. During those exams I started to get anxious and depressed, something I now continue to struggle with even with medication. By the time the second year of college rolled around I was too stressed to do my work and I had to drop out. I then spent the next few years trying a few different jobs and battling with depression that would hit whenever anything remotely difficult occurred. It was during those years that I realised my love of animals was a big help, one of the few things that could keep me calm was having an animal close by to pet or even just watch, whether that was mine or a friend's pet in a private setting, or in public settings that would normally make me anxious but didn't because I happened to be at a zoo, farm or pet store where the animals were a distraction from the bad feelings. I realised perhaps that working with animals was the best option for me, if I could handle crowds or arguments so long as I had an animal close by to calm me then I could handle any job related stress so long as animals were a main focus. I'm lucky, there's an agricultural college not too far from where I live that offers a number of animal related courses, including Equestrian, Livestock and Pet Grooming courses. However I still have a love for Biology and so I am going to be taking a course called Animal Management, which has a large Biology component and is basically about being able to care for animals in captivity to the best possible standards. I still am not sure what career I'd like to end up in, but I do know that this course will give me options and a place to start. It was a lot of stress keeping a job long enough to save up enough for the course but I did it and I start next week, I am 24 and I am so excited to be going back to school!

Oh yes, yes please! A video with your advice on breaking into and establishing oneself in a job with animals would be incredible. I’m in a similar(ish) position, unfortunately I don’t yet have the ability to get the further schooling I’d like and need to go as far as I want. But there’s a lot of options that I know I know nothing about and every point of view and explanation of personal experience is invaluable. I would very much appreciate further videos from you about this topic. The most important thing about your degree will be the connections you make and the opportunities for internships those provide. Experience is everything in this field it seems. Look how many internships Taylor had to do before she was able to land the job she really wanted.
