It really is amazing how much the less flashy kit is critical to sound - even more than the boutique show stoppers. I do love the crispness of the EUNA. It is especially good to keep the sharp transients of the plucks (I assume they're not called pizzacato like other stringed instruments??). It makes the unique sound of the harp sing.

Hahaha the cake returns for SECONDS!! It really does make a difference and I appreciate the time to show it given there has been people asking why you have to have so much EQ compression before the effects start. My two fav new phrases are “mad lad” and “Fuzz lord” 😂 I know a few guys that fit the fuzz lord moniker to a tee! I’m picky about fuzz and am more a RAT person but I totally understand when you find a fuzz you like it’s a LOT of fun! It’s really great they made the EUNA have a workaround for fuzz as ya gainstaging is usually my problem with it so it’s on my list for the future I think. Thank you both this was really helpful for me to hear and see!
@noyd41722 жыл бұрын
This is the first time I've actually heard the difference with the EUNA, which may be owing to the more dynamic and overall dark/subdued nature of the harp compared to electric guitars. It's especially important to consider (as you have) that even if you're using a compressor early in chain, the signal you feed into it has a massive influence on the signal coming out of the compressor. May more pedals have Whatever jacks. Fuzzlords bit killed me. While I wouldn't necessarily want/need a EUNA, it works for you and other people I know, so I'm happy the pedal people are happy. EDIT: Came to me right as I hit the save button. The EUNA is to pedals as Escentric Molecules Molecule 01 is to fragrances; it doesn't actually have an obvious signature, it just enhances what's already there.
@emilyharpist2 жыл бұрын
Haha thanks!! Yeah, I can’t speak to EUNA on any other instrument but it’s INSANE on harp! Apparently the whatever Jack is pretty expensive to put in a pedal, but it’s so so cool!!!! #fuzzlords

It would be a cool thing to compare the buffer in this pedal to say, a regular non-optimized buffer in a less expensive form, like say an EQ pedal first in chain. See if you can get a recording that shows not just how awesome it sounds to turn this pedal on, but putting ANY reasonable buffer in your pedal board at head of chain. For example, a Boss EQ pedal.

Seems funny to hear about a harpist using a pedal board. I've always associated a pedal board with a guitar, but it makes perfect sense. Guitar players have so many wacky sounding pedals that I can't see a harpist wanting to use them. True, I understand the need for some pedals like reverb and pedals that a acoustic guitar player might use in order to clarify the signal, but enough to warrant a pedalboard seems odd to me.

Thanks for doing this video. I own a few pedals with buffers already and you've definitely got me thinking about the 29. But I have a different question about your pedal board. Something I've really thought about is your positioning of the excellent Milkman 100. Conventional wisdom tells us to run cab sims and OD pedals before delays, reverbs, granular pedals, etc. So I'm wondering where the Milkman amp / cab sim really is in your chain and why. One big difference between you and a guitarist is the need for *clarity when playing complex, multi-voiced harmonies*. You're effectively playing the inside of a piano turned sideways in terms of the number of strings (not chromaticism, of course), while a guitarist is playing six at the most. Generally, the more complex the harmonies that a guitarist plays, the lower the level of distortion has to be (which is why the engineer for My Bloody Valentine told me they worked on the guitar sound and mic placement for weeks: to get that balance between visceral distortion and seventh chords). So I'm wondering if that need for clarity affects your placement of the amp, and where it really is in the chain. Also, I'm a piano player and keyboardist, so how musicians other than guitarists design their pedalboards is really important to me. Also, I've been wanting to buy a milkman myself! Thanks. (Another question I have is whether your harp can be recorded in stereo and whether you would prefer a stereo buffer for that, e.g., the Empress Buffer+ Stereo.)
@BillDerBergАй бұрын
It's just a buffer and for clarity l'd just put a BBE Sonic Maximizer at the end of the chain.
@NateDulcimer2 жыл бұрын
How does this work if you are using separate pickups from your harp? This looks perfect for my dulcimer rig (your before clips had the same issue my dulcimer signal has), but I run two pickups. Do you sum the pickups together for this board?
@emilyharpist2 жыл бұрын
I only need to put my harp’s one soundboard pickup into Euna - I send my bass pickup through a signal chain where it doesn’t need it as bad. I’m not exactly sure how it would handle summing a few pickups but I’m sure it would be fine! I can definitely try!
@NateDulcimer2 жыл бұрын
Awesome! It would be great if it could handle that, as It would be stretching my budget enough to get one, let alone two! You're the best!
@emusandwich7242 жыл бұрын
Hooking pickups in parallel before the buffer will cause the pickups to load each other, as the pickups will have lower impedance than the buffer/preamp/pedal you plug into. This will noticeably reduce the clarity of the sound. How do you have them hooked up currently?
