Answering a community question, Jon O'Sullivan dives into my personal and spicy takes on Brighid, the Irish goddess. Jon discuss her relationship with the Dagda, her role as a passionate character in mythology, and her connection to the funeral practice of keening.

"The courses at the Irish Pagan School offer an in-depth approach to Irish paganism that is based on genuine history and folklore. There is so much here for curious learners of all levels to gain knowledge and insight on their spiritual paths while avoiding the misinformation that is sadly common in popular modern paganism. I have benefited greatly from the classes and look forward to taking more."

I’m someone whose path is dedicated to the Morrigan and Brighid, so I love whenever they both pop up in your videos and stories Jon. Brighid’s variety of spheres of influence has always made Her feel very *complete* as an entity. Of course all of the Tuatha De feel that way, but Brighid just feels more “whole”. The range from creative inspiration to healing and home and hearth and forge gives Her, to me, the feeling of someone who is an artist at heart and someone who is never opposed to filling whatever gap needs filling in the community. And yes! The crucible and anvil are ROUGH! Go raibh mille maith agat, Jon, for all the team at IPS shares of themselves!

Okay what are the odds I was catching up on IPS content and reading lore (to deepen my Brigid relationship) and literally wondering what your thoughts were on Brigid as of an hour ago....and here it is. Yay!

Thank you. Excellent. So interesting about Brighid and keening. I have always been a devoted Brighid lover, but this last week She has been so present since my Mothers funeral. Explains so much. Perfect.

Brighid has been with me for a very long time. I experience her as, as you said, a goddess of the forge, of creating from fire. And I'd like to not let pass by the opportunity to connect that back to the question "what does a father do with a child like Brighid?" Yes, give her a hammer to Channel and shape that energy -- and also that comes with the methods of smithcraft that give us her complementary associations with fire and water: tempering. The heating and cooling of the metal such that it becomes stronger and more resilient. This is both the literal and the metaphorical lesson and gift that Brighid has for us. It is the fundamental practice of self-mastery, through the heat of courageous effort and strategic breaking down of elements, alongside the coolness of attention, precision, and deep listening, that produce all that she is associated with.

Thank you for sharing this information. I love hearing about Brighid. It's her connection with healing that initially drew me to her, but I've definitely gone through that self transformation of reforging, too.

As someone who works for Brighid, I've gotta say yes, yes, and YES. I also tend to agree with your own spicy take, but for my own personal reasons. Wish I could sit you down over a cup of coffee and discuss (not that we'd find any answers). Thanks for the video!

I've been touching base more with Brighid lately since helping with some late-life care with my grandparents. There's a tradition in my family of really intense keening at funerals that I've seen with the Syrian-American side, and it's nice to hear it can be reflected in Irish practices as well. Heavy-metal Brighid is also how we've been connecting 🤣 it's hilarious to hear you say it as well

Wow. Thank you for another terrific, insightful video about the Goddess Brighid from the point of view of lore, discussing different facets of her character, your "hot take" on Her story, and ways in which individuals connect with/worship her. That bit about Her being a "heavy metal" and fiery Deity of smithing and handling feelings through that was particularly interesting. It's quite something to picture her molding and shaping someone into a newer, upgraded, even a completely different version of oneself, as a smith fashions metals into very useful, helpful, superb, special objects. Stay blessed and be well 🙏🏽.

I enjoyed this video; in my personal practice with Bríd, I have discovered that she does not enjoy temperatures below 65° F. She does however have a sense of humor, and has landed me in, and gotten me out of more trouble than I would like.

Something else occured to me, based on your own opinion about who could be the Goddess Brighid's mother. You brought up how The Goddess Brighid is the type of Deity who, analogous to smithcraft, molds and shapes Her followers and helps them get rid of what they don't need to become better versions of themselves. Sounds a lot like the Goddess An Morrigan and how She guides and grooms those under Her wing (I recall Lora discussing that a couple of times), which lends more credence to your "spicy take" and view of the connection between the two Goddesses, and maybe there are more similarities.

do you know of the Haitian Vodou loa Maman Brigitte? she is a loa of the dead and the loa of the cemetery gates. also childbirth. she's said to have come from Ireland.

We are aware of Maman Brigitte in the Haitian practices, but we refrain from speaking about things that are outside of our own area of expertise. There are a number of other culturally important elements at play where she is concerned and its best that a person from that culture speak to those elements. Historically we do know that a lot of Irish people journeyed or were "transported" to areas around the Caribbean which may have led to some sharing or root beliefs, but those roots cannot and should not be separated from the culture in which they grew. Thanks for the query.
