Thank you for this, I found your narrative comforting and informative. My black lab Cody (8.5year old) was diagnosed with CKD last Friday and then I did EXACTLY what you guessed and googled it to death, driving myself to tears and sheer despair and panic. I spent the weekend trying to summon the courage to make a potentially "kind" decision for him if he was suffering in any way, and was preparing to say goodbye, but you have given me reason to hope. He has been switched to a renal diet and I'm going to take your advice, many thanks to you. x

@@naomiford7726 Hi Naomi, thanks for reaching out. Sadly Cody was put to sleep at the end of February as the kidney failure was related to underlying liver cancer which was devastating news to say the least. He would have been 9 years old at the end of May. It's been a real struggle to move forward as he was the centre of my world. Feeling the weight of his head cupped in my hands as he passed over will haunt me for the rest of my life. Even as I write this I have tears rolling down my cheeks. We memorialised him by landscaping a corner of our garden and planting carrots as he loved gobbling them up. It has a little stone in the corner reading "Cody's Carrot Corner". I like to think he would have approved!

Im so sorry to hear this. My old boy (10 years old) has been diagnosed with CKD and is pretty late in treatment. To see my boy lose his spark, it really kills me inside. I take comfort in knowing you were able to prolong cody's life even by 5 months. And I know that cody lived a fulfilled and loving life.

Doctor. Thank you for this. My Rocky was diagnosed just about 3 years ago that he was in stage 3 Kidney failure and that he should eat the prescription diet. I fed that to him for about 3 days...I have since educated myself and have been feeding him REAL food home cooked and sometimes raw and he is here 3 years later with incredible energy. It's amazing.

Just said goodbye to my dog yesterday after 15 years of making us all happy. Her uterus was removed the day before but it couldn't save her kidney. I blame it on myself because I always thought she was the healthiest dog I've ever had and therefore didn't need annual vet checkups. I lost her baby just 13 months ago and I was also devastated from that. Now I only have one dog left and I promise I will do my best so he can live longer.

My heart truly goes out to you during this incredibly difficult time. Losing a beloved pet is one of the hardest experiences, especially after such a long and cherished companionship. It's natural to feel a sense of guilt, but please remember that you provided your dog with a wonderful life filled with love and care. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, things beyond our control happen. Reflecting on your promise to do the best for your remaining dog, there are several steps you can take to ensure his health and longevity. Regular vet checkups are crucial; they can help catch potential issues early, even in seemingly healthy pets. Focusing on a holistic approach to his care can make a significant difference. Consider integrating real, whole foods into his diet, as proper nutrition is foundational to health (pets.holisticpethealthcoach.com/TOCPD). Regular exercise is also essential, not only for physical well-being but also for mental stimulation and happiness. Daily walks, playtime, and even simple activities like fetch or agility exercises can help keep him fit and content. Moreover, paying attention to his emotional health is just as important. Dogs are incredibly intuitive and can sense our emotions. Creating a calm and loving environment will help him feel secure and happy. Techniques like the clear energy technique or spending quality time together can make a big difference. Lastly, don't hesitate to seek support from a holistic pet health coach. They can provide personalized guidance and support, helping you navigate any health concerns and ensuring your dog lives his best life.

Thank you so much Dr. Roberts. My dog's creatinine level was at 1,8 and in Italy where I live it is considered within the limits of the norm. He had his spleen removed due to a tumour and a few days after he came home from the clinic he collapsed. I took him in a taxi to the clinic and they did not know what was wrong. I asked them to check his kidney levels and the creatinine had risen to 6,9. He was admitted to the clinic for a few nights and put on IV fluids. I was told when I went to pick him back up that unfortunately he would slowly go out like a candle. I was shocked and could not function for a few days. I took my dog home and continued with fluids, but not IV, subcutaneous. He was very weak and refused food. I took him back to my local vet who ran blood tests again and told me that the creatine level was 5,3 and because it was still dangerously high, I would need to have the dog put to sleep a few days later. I took him home again and he suddenly developed an appetite, in fact he is three times as hungry as he was pre-op. I give him turkey meatballs with grated courgettes and grated carrots in them. He loves them. I have added a little bit of spaghetti. This was almost three weeks ago. My dog is back to his old happy self but is still painfully thin after the op. He is eating so much and is enjoying his food for the first time in his eight years of life. He was always a fussy eater before and no way would he ever have eaten meatballs with carrots and courgettes in them. He is not one hundred per cent but is improving by the days. I am disappointed in the vets at the clinic and my own vet. The wrote him off as a 'no hope case' due to his blood work and offered no kind of treatment. I only hope he continues to improve. Thanks so much for this video. It is exactly what I needed.

@@hoopdie He refused the hill's science plan kidney canned food. I give him fish and carrots and courgettes and some spaghetti cut up into the tiniest pieces so he can digest everything easily. Next day he gets turkey meatballs with grated courgettes and grated carrots. I get the butcher to mince the turkey for me. I also give him thin slices of veal which I fill up with a mix of grated carrots, grated courgettes and green beans chopped up into tiny pieces. Sometimes I alternate the spaghetti with rice. I vary his diet with good fresh human food. I have stopped all dog treats. I give him subcutaneous fluids every other day. About 250ml at a time, even if he still drinks water. This is to give the added boost of hydration as the kidneys need to be hydrated. You need to buy a drip line and a butterfly needle. A small needle for pets with a little butterfly at the end of it. I attach the bottle of fluids to the drip and then the needle at the end of the drip line. I hold the scruff of his neck at insert the needle and wait till his neck fills up with the fluid then i massage it. It takes a couple of hours for it to go through his system. You need to buy LACTATE RINGERS, the name of the solution, drip liquid. My dog has liver and kidney problems but he is almost back to his old self with the new diet. No more dog biscuits or treats. He has adapted well to his new diet and eats like a horse. Two months ago he was a crumpled up bag of bones in a terrible state. I also give him an omega three capsule every day and add pure virgin olive oil to his food. He is still thin but not the bag of bones he ended up. Another main ingredient is lots of love and pats. He goes for walks but walks much slower than he did but he still enjoys his walks and enjoys meeting other dogs while out walking. I must add that I prayed night and day and begged God to spare him. On the worst day possible when he seemed to not be recovering he all of a sudden developed an appetite. They gave him up for dead two months ago and he is thriving. I have not been back to the vet for any more blood tests. I've run out of money as I spent everything I had and even went into rent arrears to pay vet bills. I don't need to look at blood levels as I can see with my own eyes that my precious boy is recovery by the day.

I also buy a chicken once a week and he has that for two days with the usual spaghetti. When he has this, I throw grated carrots and grated courgettes into the pot of spaghetti a couple of mins before the spaghetti is cooked, drain the lot and with scissors, cut it all up into tiny pieces and add the chicken with a spoonful of pure virgin olive oil.

I just had to let the love of my life go last night. Her kidney failure happened so fast to the point she couldn't even walk anymore nor go to bathroom. Part of me knows I tried and it happened too fast and the other part wonders if I should have done better or am to blame that the situation could have turned around and with me today still. She was starting to do good and then all the sudden dropped tons of weight, diarrhea, refused to eat, couldn't walk anymore, despite following doctor protocol, syringe feeding her, nothing worked. My heart is devastated.

I'm deeply sorry for your loss and the pain you're experiencing right now. It's natural to question what more could have been done, especially when the decline is rapid and severe, as you've described. Kidney failure, particularly in its advanced stages, can progress unpredictably, and despite our best efforts, the outcome can be heartbreakingly out of our control. Sometimes, despite all our love and relentless care, the kindest decision is to let go to prevent further suffering.

I think my dog has kidney disease because when I took her in for a routine ultrasound that was included in her senior plan at my current bet, the results came back with two diagnosis of Diffuse hepatopathy and Bilateral chronic renal degeneration. She had had bloodwork prior to this five months before and the results of that compared to the iris data said that she would’ve been in early stage one. I don’t know if that bloodwork could’ve changed so that’s why I’m going to get it retested now that I have the ultrasound results. But I have driving myself crazy trying to figure out what I can do to keep my baby with me for as long as possible. I feed her Dr Harvey’s with 2oz of 90% lean ground beef and I give her solutions better butter tea goat, milk because she doesn’t drink a lot and never has which I think is part of the problem. I always have to find some other way of getting the hydration into her because she even with freshwater doesn’t like to go to the water bowl which I know is critical for kidney dogs she’s also an extremely picky eater.
@DrRuthRoberts
@DrRuthRoberts 12 күн бұрын
I understand your concern and the desire to do everything possible to support your dog's health, especially in the face of kidney issues. It's commendable that you're proactive in managing her condition and seeking retesting to get a clearer picture of her kidney health. Given the ultrasound findings and previous blood work, monitoring her kidney function closely is crucial. Although the progression from early stage one to more noticeable degeneration within five months is concerning, it is not uncommon in senior pets. Your approach to retesting is wise, as it will provide a baseline from which to work. Regarding hydration, which is indeed critical for kidney health, you're already making smart choices by incorporating goat milk and better butter tea to increase her fluid intake. Since she's not keen on drinking water directly, she continues to explore ways to incorporate moisture into her meals. You might consider increasing the amount of goat milk or adding water directly to Dr. Harvey's meals to make them more hydrating. Wetting her food not only helps with hydration but can also make the food more appealing to her, potentially addressing her pickiness. Enhancing the flavor of food can sometimes encourage more regular eating and drinking for picky eaters with kidney concerns. Experimenting with different flavors or adding small amounts of highly palatable, low-phosphorus broths might also help. Additionally, ensuring that her food is served at a slightly warm temperature can make the food more aromatic and enticing. Lastly, continue to monitor her hydration status closely. Signs of dehydration can be subtle, so keeping an eye on her skin elasticity and gum moisture can provide quick checks at home.

I was told the same thing, that putting her down was the best route to take. Her BUN level is above 140.0, unchanged but her creatinine level went from 9.3 down to 7.4 due to the IV fluids given to her but they still consider that putting her down is the best I can do. I refused and took her home. I've been giving her pedialyte mixed with a few drops of greek plain yogurt for the probiotics. She stopped vomiting and stopped having diarrhea. She now started to walk around and finally started to drink water on her own. I don't let her drink too much for fear of her starting to throw up again. I now added pumpkin and sweet potato organic baby food using a syringe without a needle to the side of her mouth. I've given this twice and she has taken it without issue so far. I don't know how many days she can survive on this but I'm giving this to her about every 2 hours or so day and night along with many prayers. I hope I can help her, I don't know what else to do. My Ethel has kidney disease she is about 14yrs trying to make a decision
@DrRuthRoberts
@DrRuthRoberts 21 күн бұрын
I'm sorry to hear that Ethel is facing kidney disease, especially at her vulnerable age. Managing kidney disease in senior pets like Ethel can indeed be challenging, but there are several approaches you can consider to help maintain her quality of life. Firstly, it's crucial to understand the specifics of her condition. Often, what is diagnosed as kidney failure might actually be less severe, such as elevated kidney enzymes, which can sometimes be stabilized or even improved with the right approach. A diet tailored to her needs can play a significant role. I generally recommend a home-cooked diet, which can be adjusted to ensure it's low in phosphorus and provides high-quality protein. This diet helps reduce her kidneys' workload. Increasing her water intake is also vital. This can be achieved by encouraging wet food diets or adding water to her food, especially if she prefers dry food. Additionally, managing her environment to reduce stress and using supplements to support kidney function can be beneficial. This includes using fluid therapy and controlling phosphorus levels, which are crucial for pets with kidney disease. For Ethel, considering her age and the nature of her disease, palliative care might also be an avenue to explore. This isn't limited to end-of-life care but includes any treatment aimed at optimizing her comfort and managing symptoms without necessarily curing the disease.

Please pray for me. I’m so stressed out. My 13.5 year old chihuahua had labs done this week and had a creatinine of 12. It was normal 2 years ago. She got a Rabies vaccine 3 weeks ago and has collapsed trachea. She’s sometimes aggressive so they muzzled her at the vet. I wasn’t there but they say she passed out and needed oxygen. Basically it’s so hard to watch your dog deteriorate over night. I’ve already spent 2600 dollars. Emergency 3 day overnight will be 5 to 6 thousand. This all happened so fast.

Yes I have 3 in stage 2 they say. One vet wants me to start sub qs at creat 2.6 way to soon for fluids i think.
@DrRuthRoberts
@DrRuthRoberts 2 ай бұрын
It's understandable to have concerns about starting subcutaneous fluids (sub-Qs) at this stage. According to the International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) guidelines, a creatinine level of 2.6 indicates stage 2 kidney disease. While some veterinarians might recommend fluids earlier to help support kidney function, there are other ways to manage kidney health at this point. One of the most important aspects is diet. I generally advise against switching to a low-protein diet too early, as it can lead to muscle wasting, which is detrimental to older pets. Instead, focus on increasing the moisture content in their diet. Cooking for your pets, such as using the CrockPet diet (pets.holisticpethealthcoach.com/TOCPD), can significantly boost their fluid intake and help reduce the workload on their kidneys. Also, consider incorporating quercetin into their regimen, as it has shown promise in reducing creatinine levels over time. This, combined with a high-quality, moisture-rich diet, can often make a substantial difference in managing kidney health.

Doctor, my dog's 5 year old, and she has Serum Creatinine of 36.5 mg/dl, Blood Urea of 671.6 mg/dl, Blood Urea Nitrogen of 313.8 mg/dl. She was diagnosed with these results on 9th of January, and now she's sneezing blood since last 7-8 hrs. She didn't use to eat by her own before, my mummy used to force feed her. And now she vomits whatever my mummy force feeds her. She hasn't eaten in last 7 days, just a little bit my mummy fed her, that too she vomited. We're terrified and sad. What should we do? Should we consider euthanasia at this point? Please do respond Doctor.

I was very excited to check out your free kidney protocols. But then when I signed up and went to the members area, the FREE Holistic Health protocols....when I clicked on "Kidney Support Protocol", it only displays links to buy products and for paid consultations. I'm still scratching my head trying figure out how something is labeled free and then when you click, it's only paid items. The information you are presenting may be great, but it's certainly not free, and shouldn't be presented as such.

My dog got diagnosed with Herlichia but also caused kidneys failure. Hes around 12 so he's considered a senior dog. The IV fluids and medication did nothing to him. I heard about pet Dialysis, and willing to travel to the next city because it's available there. At this point the cost of this treatment even worth it? I want to give him a fighting chance . But wonder if he would do good after treatment or just let him go. What should I do.

Thank you Dr. My 9 yr old was just dx w kidney problems, the foul small, vomiting, anemic. I have tried several things and finally started cooking for her. I stand and watch and she has started to put outside the plate what she does not like, dry food, pieces of veggies in the hills diet. I got her sirloin (small amount) cooked it on skillet the boiled and blended with brown rice, I mix this with zucchini, carrots and sweet potato, she is eating twice a day. I am unclear and I am researching fish oil, I read dogs don’t process it that well so it needs to be balanced with vitamin c. I am wondering about other vitamins and supplements. Dr Roberts 🥺 my baby was diagnosed with acute renal failure last week with his creatinine level being at 862.. he was hospitalised for a week under IV fluids, dropped to 680, 536, 522, and then went back to 533 yesterday when he was discharged 😓 the vet has given us subQ fluids to give 150mil at home and the only suspicious that showed possible underlying issue in his blood and urine test was immune-meditated kidney disease which he is on steroids and antibiotics for to see of it helps.. he is also apparently anemic 😢 so has EPO injections.. today was his first day at home and we found it very hard to give him his meds and fluids because he is very anxious and snappy making it difficult to handle 😓 do u think there is any hope for him? We have started considering PTS because it hurts so much seeing him deteriorate like this.. he doesn't eat and drinks very little.. we are devastated

Greetings from Greece Doctor. My 10 year old, (mixed?) German Sheperd had blood check up last November, with creatinine at 1.80. Doctors suggested me renal dry food, which I bought and it seemed to work, because it droped the creatinine to 1.16. Unfortunatelly she gained a lot of weight, due to the high fat of the food, exactly 5 kgs and her back legs are clearlly affected. She was diagnosed with hip dysplasia one year ago, with a small deviation and arthritis due to age, and since she started gaining weight, I can see that she limps and I also hear a sound, from her left leg, "as if a bone comes out and comes in again". I understand she is in pain some times, but she still wants to go on long walks and play. I also started to give her, Flexadin Advanced in tablets, 3 months ago, but it only seemed to help her the first days. Unfortunatelly my home has 5 small stepstairs, which she passes 3 times a day to go on a walk. How can we save both kidneys and legs? Thank you.

Hi Dr. Roberts. Thank you so much for the very informative video. I adopted two senior girls a year ago. I recently had their blood works done I was told they are both suffering from kidney disease; SDMA, Creatine and BUN are all high. Since being with us they have not shown physical signs of kidney failure, except during one phase the little one would wee in the house. And for a period of time she did get lethargic but that was from worms. For the past year they have been on home cooked food; vegetables, grains and protein. After listening to your video I will be ordering the fish oil and probiotics. I guess what I am asking is, should we be worried? Is there anything else we can do? The vet has put them on epakitin and azodyl. Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

My dog also diagnosed with stage 3 renal failure 😔 i am willing to cook her home food since it's what I always do but what caused it is gum disease, i didn't know that the little tooth that has gingivitis could do that and it's not small at all. Underneath it is a big infection that brought bacteria to her kidneys. Anemia is too sever, vet said she can't do the surgery... I'm trying to stabilize her health and maybe we can lengthen her age..i want her to stay with me longer . If I am to choose I will focus more on her diet ....but the tooth extraction is my main concern
