My 17 year old small dog gradually improved over 4 months and his kidney values are now back to where they were last January - creatine back down to 1.8 from a high of 3.3. He was administered fluids subcutaneously twice. I knew I would not be able to do it at home for him, though I did for another, more docile old dog years ago. He got omeprazole, ondansetron and an antibiotic for months, and after being frustratingly picky, he got his appetite back eventually. He has been on Hills K/D chicken and rice stew for about a month and loves it! He likes crunchy food as a snack, and so we have added some of the Hills K/D kibble for snacks and treats. Over the last month he has put back on a lot of the weight he lost and is so happy and much more peppy. The IM vet thought he had had a hidden infection somewhere that did not show up on lab tests. I am so, so happy with how he is now. We are going to keep him on a kidney food, though may look for one with a lower fat level. An ultrasound showed some concerning results in other organs, but I am hopeful he will keep going for quite a while longer. ❤

Hello. Going through this with my 15 yo Yorkie now. My vet had t prescribed anything except fluids, which I am doing at home, antibiotic for an infection and an appetite stimulant. Was your dogs advanced? I’m wondering if I need to seek a 2nd opinion. He’s at the stage where he won’t eat - I’m feeding him with a dropper and mostly goat milk and bone broth and a paste of canned food mixed with water. Thank you for any info you can share on how you successfully helped your dog get better.

My one year old dog got diagnosed with kidney failure. Now, my dog is a magician. She broke out of her crate and had gotten a brand new bottle of ibuprofen off the table that was in the box still. She managed to chew through the whole bottle while I was away at work. I looked all over the house for pills and only found one. She was vomiting and having diarrhea as well as tremors when I took her to the vet. She spent two days in hospitalization, they have gotten a blood sample everyday to check kidney function and have pumped fluids to clear out her system. Luckily, she got to come home today. My dog has gotten things off the table before, but I never would have expected her to chew up a bottle of pills. I’m just thankful she has a second chance!

My Dog has been very Lethargic, Not eating, urinenating frequently and very disorientated and sleeping most of the day. I took her to the VET...they did give her Fluids under the skin. She seems to have 'Come back to Life' When given the fluids and actually more active. The VET did tell me that I will Need to consider the quality of life ...and make the very hard decision of when to put her down. I am currently trying the non vomiting meds and going to give her the fluid under the skin as much as needed. Sadly it was to late for my 12 year old little dog, she wasn’t eating or drinking and she showed us that she didn’t want to fight anymore it had been 5 days that she hadn’t of eaten and our vet said that the kidney failure was untreatable. One of my mums friend is a vet and she helped or little dog by freeing her of her pain and suffering at home in her bed as that was the kindest thing to do as she was to weak to even turn her head. She is in a better place now with my golden retriever that sadly passed 5 years ago.

My 10 yr old beagle was a voracious eater and suddenly went off her feed. She would drink a ton of water and then throw it up. It started very abruptly. After a few days we decided to get her checked. BUN and Creatinine and phosphorus were up but no anemia yet. Not sure about her BP. This was all found out yesterday and she spent the night in the hospital getting IV fluids. She has another autoimmune condition called "beagle pain syndrome" which is actually steroid responsive meningitis angiitis, or SRMA. My thought is that her kidney failure may be related to this autoimmune condition. Over the years we have had many dogs. And lost many dogs. My suggestion to all of you is this. If your dog starts showing symptoms of being sick, don't watch it for a few days or weeks to see what happens. Get to the vet ASAP. Don't be embarrassed that maybe you are jumping the gun or being a worry wart. ALL of our dogs who showed symptoms of being ill had a significant disease that did NOT just go away. If they are off their normal feed or behavior or just don't look right, they ARE sick. Go immediately.

So it came on so quickly, when I went to the vet and get the blood work I was devastated I have been feeding him Pedialyte through a syringe which he is tolerated quite well. 60 cc's of a nutritional supplement, because he was refusing to eat anything and was getting so weak, and so thin. I gave him Ensure, the diabetic one cuz it's low and salt and sugar. Which he did well with and was able to walk and started to.. I tried everything for him to eat, with no avail then gave him some raw hamburger and he had one bite did well with that,. Then refused it I tried everything then I cooked it, he had five b which I believe was just too much for his stomach and threw it up. So frustrating I just want him well. I just want to say thank you for making this video. My dog’s primary vet ran some blood work the other day, because I said my dog was just not acting like himself. He’s survived having zero platelets and is in remission from immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP). We adopted him as a senior so he’s struggled with several health related issues, so any slight change in his appetite, mood, energy, etc. we head to the vet. Our primary vet called me the the day after he did the blood work saying he was in kidney failure. I immediately called his internal medicine specialist to make an appointment. It will be a week before we get to see our specialist. I’ve been losing my mind thinking about it. We’ve gone in for a couple of times for subcutaneous fluids and we were sent home with some to administer each day until we see his specialist and get further direction. Your video gave me some reassurance in knowing that I am helping him while we wait for our specialist to develop a care plan to maintain his quality of life, if he has chronic kidney disease.

I literally purchased everything on the market available and he wouldn't touch the stuff. Even mixing it with other tasty items he would just separate and leave the prescription diet food in his bowl. The vet said its quite common that dogs dont like the stuff. If you can get your dog to eat it then thats fantastic, it would really benefit them. I ended up feeding him a regular senior food combined with a product called "Phos bind" . He was also on a blood pressure medication. The anti nausea pill didnt seem to have an effect and the appetite stimulant gave him diarrhea. Little by little i had to mix more and more meat in his diet just to get him to eat at all. He held on for another year or so but eventually he stopped eating and drinking altogether no matter what i fed him.

I reckon the biggest obstacle with kidney failure in older dogs is that, in advanced age, there are likely other health issues. Obviously if the kidney disease is caught early there are some viable options. I’m struggling with a 17 year old Jack Russell with various health issues not the least of which is canine cognitive disorder. I feel somewhat guilty because there may have been things I could have done earlier that could have made a difference. She has had digestive system issues her whole life and it may have masked some of the signs of kidney disease. Now with the CCD I’m just trying to make her as comfortable as I can and keep her hydrated. I reckon once she will no longer eat I will have a tough decision to make. I guess in an ideal world, any animal (human or otherwise) world pass peacefully in their sleep, but unfortunately that’s not the reality in most cases. My poor best friend still has some good days but they are getting fewer and farther between. I hope videos like yours can make a difference to some pets. I think sometimes vets sometimes just do quick exams and miss important things and also some pet owners don’t know early warning signs to inform the vet to investigate further. And also, let’s not forget, vet care is expensive and while it’s impossible to put a dollar value on a pets companionship, the bills do have to be paid. I’m hoping that advances in quality and affordable health insurance for pets improves over time.
@DogtorPete3 жыл бұрын
Hey Tom. I am sorry to hear about your doggo. You are right, many other diseases do mask early symptoms of kidney failure and this makes early detection very difficult. It is also unfortunately not something that can be reversed, but only managed to keep the doggo comfortable up to a certain point. It is never fun to think that you will need to make a difficult decision at some stage down the line, but something that I always cherish is the fact that your dog had a full and good quality of life. Very few dogs make it to that age, so she is very fortunate to have loving and caring parents who supported her throughout all these years. I really hope that you'll be able to spend as much time as possible with your furry child. :)

@TomDavis - I also have a 17 year old Jack Russell who is currently in the hospital with kidney problems (vet has not confirmed CKD at this point, but it looks likely). Similar to you, I feel guilty for not doing more earlier. With him being so old, I thought his lethargy and loss of appetite was due to old age and figured the vet would say the same. I never thought something more chronic was building up, until the more severe symptoms began to surface. He's so tough (as most Jack's are) that, looking back, I think he tried really hard to push through the discomfort and not show any signs that he was slowing down. My goal is also to make my boy feel as comfortable as possible when I am able to bring him home from the vet. I know the hospital bills will be expensive, but they mean nothing if it means they can help extend the quality of life for my boy and alleviate some of his symptoms. Anyway, I mostly want to thank you for sharing your comment. It made me feel a lot less alone knowing that there was another doggy parent of another 17 year old jack out there going through the same thing. I hope your fur baby is doing alright.

His normal vet had no idea and sent him to a specialist. The specialist said another few hours he would have died. Overnight transfusion, hills kd food, daily ibuprofen, enalapril, and telemisartan and hes just now in end stages of kidney failure 8 years later. Thank god for those specialists. Cost me a ton of money tho! Over the past 6 months hes gone from 55 to 40 lbs. Runny poop(trying everything to help but no luck). Lethargic, stinky breath. He still begs for treats. My dog is 10 with CKD. She was 8.5 when I adopted her and was in stage 3. She’s now in stage 4. She gets 200ml subcutaneous fluids every other day, only eats kidney care diets and kidney safe treats, and gets anti-nausea medication as needed. She’s a picky eater so I bounce between Hills/Science diet KD and JustFoodForDogs low protein renal diet. She is doing well clinically (happy, playful, eating, drinking, and going potty regularly) but we continue to take her blood pressure and test her blood and urine regularly to monitor her kidney values as well as protein in her urine and check for raised blood pressure. She also gets acupuncture every other week. My other dog with hip dysplasia benefited tremendously from acupuncture (was able to lower his pain medication and he is walk, running, and playful again) and while my veterinarian said there has yet to be definitive evidence that it helps slow the progression of CKD, I do it for both of them. If anything, I figured it couldn’t hurt. Thank you for your video! I love my veterinarian and she explained a great deal of what you covered but it’s great to hear a little more and have this as a resource when I need a refresher!

Sounds like you have a great vet! I am frantically looking for one. Seems the ones in my area don't treat kidney disease at all, it's just something you live with or they want to put them down. Sad. I'm wondering how you take your dog's blood pressure. Is there some kind of dog cuff? His pressure has never been checked at a veterinarian.

My little dog Lucky Valintine just passed away this week from what I think was kidney failure (chronic). I had him tested for Cushing syndrome and diabetes because he was drinking large amounts of water and eating slot. The tests were negative. Good information, easy to understand. Unfortunately, I lost my Sprinkles last August to Kidney Disease. She was diagnosed at Stage 4 at 13 years old (Cavalier/Poodle mix) and unfortunately, although we tried hospitalization, fluids, renal diet, her quality of life deteriorated quickly and I had to say goodbye to her 2 weeks after diagnosis. Now, my other senior dog Kaitlin (also 13, Poodle/Schnauzer mix) was just diagnosed. We caught it a little earlier Early stage 3, so I’m hopeful. She is taken to the renal food quickly and I hope to keep her comfortable longer. (note: both dogs had regular checkups including blood work, Sprinkles last blood work before the one showing issues was 8 months before and no issues at all). Kaitlin’s blood work was 2 months before and although her levels weren’t low, they were in normal range). It’s a frustrating disease, knowing the symptoms to watch out for is so important. The one thing I learned from losing Sprinkles so quickly was to get the blood work done as soon as you think there may be a problem.

We have a 12 year old chihuahua who has cushings and is diabetic. She was also diagnosed with kidney failure May 2, 2022. Her BUN on that day was at 48. So we began giving 150 ml every other day as instructed. We brought her in for another visit to another vet on June 18, 2022 and her BUN was at 82. We were so stunned and very concerned over the new numbers and were told to give her fluids twice a day. Her prognosis seemed bleak. Well, unfortunately we tried everything and she simply would NOT tolerate the twice daily fluids. We had to settle for once a day and pray it was enough to help keep her going. Today, July 28, 2020 we took her to a third vet and to our dismay, he admonished us for giving her fluids and asked us why we were doing that to her. We told him we were instructed by an ER vet to give her fluids twice daily and had to settle for giving her fluids once daily instead. He told us “STOP!! STOP POKING HER! She doesn’t like it and why would you want to do that to her???!” Needless to say I felt shocked and offended that he would question us over following a veterinarian’s instructions when all that time we had been feeling so guilty that we were failing her by giving her only one treatment instead of two. He said 150 mL a day for a 14 lbs dog is way too much and added that we should have never been giving her that much. As though somehow it was an indictment on us for mistreating her. He took her to the back to check her kidney numbers and were we ever shocked when he came back 20 minutes later and said, “YES, STOP the fluids. Her BUN is at 29.” She’s not in renal failure. She’s at stage 2b or 3. With three different veterinarians telling us three different things within six weeks time what are we to think? While I am thrilled to death that her BUN was at 29 I can’t help but think that if we were “giving her too many fluids” her number would’ve been 7, 8 or even lower than that. Isn’t the fact that her BUN is now 29 proof that the fluids were actually working? I only want to do what’s best for my dog. It’s just that simple. We are concerned that if we stop the fluids that her numbers will go soaring back up into the 80s again. Can you please help give me your insight on this. I’m not asking for any advice. I’d just like to know if you have any idea why he doesn’t attribute the good results to the daily fluids. We would love nothing more than to discontinue the fluids. It’s been such a stressful thing for all of us.

How is your dog now? I have read that creatinine is the more important indicator regarding the kidneys, so I have not made a mental note about my dog's BUN numbers. It sounds like your latest vet lacked bedside manner, so to speak. You were doing what you had been told was right. I hope things are better. If not, maybe look for an Internal Medicine specialist.

I feel for everyone here going through this. My doggie was euthanized due to this about 15 weeks ago. For months he would not eat the renal foods (can or kibble) but would eat various things one time or another. One thing I did give him (the vet said he was in hospice so he would like it) something he loved. Small bits of sweet Pepperidge Farm cookies without chocolate. For 5 months I had a routine where I sat behind him on a small stool and inserted can renal food down his throat (careful not to hold mouth close) Until the dog gets used to it, you may want to use a bandaid on the finger you use. After a while he got used to it, knew it was eating and accepted it. It was messy, but I portioned out a meal in small bites and just went at it. Thankfully he never stopped drinking water. At his end he still had lost a lot of weight, had trouble standing mostly, and slept. It was hard but my duty to see him off peacefully.

My dog is 15yro never been sick but cataracts led to painful glaucoma my Vet recommended to use otc liquid Paracetamol for pain She didn't warn about toxic deadly side affects over a few weeks. I cannot comprehend the logic using such a high risk drug. It ulcerated his stomach throw up blood, destroys red blood cells. Overdoses cause fatal kidney and liver failure. She denied paracetamol poisoning or overdose as his liver/kidney results weren't ok. He almost died ultrasound sadation she suggested it might be his time to go and his old and blind. I took him home to recover, had diarrhea over night. Lost appetite, no food, I gave him colostrum twice a day and heaps of dried liver treats. His red cell count normalized. That was 8 weeks ago. He's still slightly weak but loves walking and sleeping a lot. Now he's drinking and urinating more and having bed accidents. I believe the affects have taking some time to show up and his symptoms spell KD. Had he been euthanized I doubt what killed him would be clearified or confirmed Paracetamol caused. I beyond pissed off and out of pocket almost 3k.

Doc, i don't know if you can help me out or probably shed some light into our situation. I currently have a 10 year old dog who is suffering from CKD. He was a healthy dog a mix of German shepherd and an aspin, was introduced to dog food which is pedigree, he used to hunt house mice too. I warned my family about him hunting mice I also learned that getting leptospirosis from mice hunting can hurt his kidney. We have no idea about the cause of his CKD, he was all healthy until one day it happened. It started with vomiting, lost of appetite and mouth sores. Day 1 of being in the Vet they put him on IV fluids, he had a high count of creatine level. Day 2 he looked more healthier than he was day 1 because of the IV fluids helping his kidney. Day 3 they had to retest and take him off the IV fluids, sadly the creatine level didn't even budge. Now he is at home, he is weak, he has mouth sores and in pain. He does not eat, he vomits his medications and he wobbles when he walks. He also drops on the ground when laying down. He walks around the house in a weird way ever since he was diagnosed. There was a point where my mom was standing up then my dog just walked circles around her which is a bizarre behavior for him. Now we are reading some experiences and have seen stage 4 recoveries which is extremely rare. We are in a tight spot since we do not know if we should keep him on IV fluids, or just give him what he enjoys daily and love him before he pass away. The family is devastated because he has been our younger brother since he was born 10 years ago. I love him but if he needs to go, he can go and rest.

I’m struggling… we have an English cream golden retriever. She just turned seven. She’s been a chunk since she was born. She’s not a big eater but she is also very lazy. My husband does walk her usually 2 X’s a day. Our children are grown and we have no other pets so she isn’t very interested in playing with other dogs. All that to say … her Veterinarian just told us that she’s in stage five of kidney disease. This was found at her seven-year-old check up and we have tried a different food for her that the vet gave us and it has done nothing. She barely even eats it. Her water intake has has become a lot more than normal. She just had her second check up to redo her blood levels and as of last Friday he said that she stage five? I asked him 1 million questions but I’ll be honest. Long story short there’s a lot of trauma in my brain from other things and other people that I lost at the time that she turned one unfortunately this has triggered my PTSD, because I am terrified of losing her. She has truly been like a therapy dog for me. She has completely changed in the fact that she does go and hide in the house, she’s drinking a lot more water, we’re pretty sure she had a seizure about three weeks ago, she sleeps, literally almost all day all night. I have noticed that she doesn’t even get up and goes to the door when my husband comes home which is completely out of character I just feel like she isn’t herself. My biggest fear is me leaving and coming home to find her and I don’t think I can mentally handle it. I also don’t want to just put her down because I’m scared. I’m definitely not interested in trying medication‘s or fluids, and when I said that to the vet, he seemed to agree without saying so. My husband also agrees with that here is my question do you know when or if it’s the time to put your dog down? I want her to live for 1000 more years, but I’m truly scared of her getting worse and watching that process. Any suggestions are welcome but please please be kind I know there’s a lot of people that have given me advice that seems to be extremely insensitive to the situation that I went through four years ago with my mom. I have asked that every question I know to ask him and we really love our veterinarian he’s always been great and his son is also a doctor there and we love them both. I trust them and their opinions I just don’t know what to do.😢😢😢😢

Can benazepril increase kidney levels in a dog already in kidney failure?
@jamesbarratt5932 жыл бұрын
I had to say good bye to my best mate a few days ago. He hadnt eaten in ten days and his breath was terrible. I had tried to feed hi and every few hours passing he would vomit it right back up again. Im also disgusted with our vets in the uk and when I took him to a vet the woman in her twenties said hes seriously dehydrated as his eyes were back in his head and she'd advised he be put to sleep. I paused and said no. I want him to be put on a drip and his blood tested. She asked was I insured. I'd said no but I own my own business and money is not an issue here. She'd called me half an hour later saying she'd checked and from his blood report his kidneys are failing. his blood toxin levels are off the charts. He must be put down. I drove there and they'd prepared the lethal injection. I was told to wait outside a few minutes then lead in to my baby boy. Looking much better on the floor. He'd raised his head and his eyes were clearer. I said he is looking better and the nurse said no his kidneys are failing. He must be put to sleep. I was so deeply confused. I found myself somehow pushed into signing the form and she put my boy down. Im heart broken you know. He'd raised his head and then after taking a look about himself laid his head down and then this woman had ended his life. I dont think it was right. Now I consider how the woman was pushy about it and how it must happen and her not giving me any other options and think she is very wrong. Her actions are disgusting. They charged me £587 after. It is not the money. Its the fact she should have given me other options. I bet there was other options. The nurse said when he was alive that I cant take him home because they wont allow it. He must be put to sleep. Can you tell me anything about this situation. Should she have given me other options?

@@crizlopez3119 its the hardest thing. I dont trust vets either. Ten years old and 3 independent vets told my parents our horse with bad foot had to be euthanised. Then came the black smith. He’d said they were fools. Clearly to him the horse had stood upon a thorn and it had travelled up inside the blood to be caught in the knee area. After xray the man was right and the vets had been wrong. Throughout life I have found vets to be useless. So taking my boy to them and having them say he should have been euthanised was hard. Inside me though by how ill he had been. I had excepted it. Again the whole thing was an exceptionally nasty business. I never want to have to experience it again either.

I'm so sorry about your dog 💔 My vet is the opposite, not giving me clear answers. I think he's against aggressive treatment on senior dogs which is fine but I'd rather know his real professional advice instead of leaving me wondering what to do. He didn't offer a treatment plan but didn't advise to send him to heaven either so I'm confused and can't stop crying over my best friend. Going for a second opinion tomorrow.

@@gracefultimes vets talk crap. Ours had him ten mins in the room and never even touched him re skin complaint. Said needs blood test. Went another vet and again they said same thing as 3 others. Steroids. Soon as he took them, bloated stomach and blood in his toilet. As a kid 3 vets said put my mums horse down diagnosing laminitis. A blacksmith looked and was furious. Knew instantly it was a thorn in foot which had travelled up the vein and lodged behind the knee cap. Operation and horse fine. Vets talk crap. Seeing too many animals and cant possibly be good

My Maltipoo died of kidney failure just recently. The vet said high in creatinine. My pet died a day after the visit in vet. I just came here to see if it's my fault what made my pet have kidney failure. I saw my pet suffer. There were no symptoms a week before my pet died.

One of the most important things you can do to help a pup is feed a whole food, raw diet. "Prescription" diets are far too dry and loaded with ulta processed ingredients, which make the kidneys work harder to filter all the junk out. My Golden was diagnosed with early stage II CKD in December 2022. She is few a raw diet and takes kidney supporting supplements and her kidney values have remained the same since.

Protein management is the key. 100%
@jelly32998 ай бұрын
Not until later stages. If you reduce protein in stages III or earlier, you will introduce other issues such as muscle wasting and fatigue.

We lost my 14.5 yr old golden retriever 5 days ago. The pain of losing our best friend and family member is raw and painful. Our vet didnt tell us why amd how she got end stage kidyney failure other than telling us she wasn't optimistic in Maya's future. Maya's symptoms started with vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, skin ulcers, difficulty getting up. We told by our vet she had spinal degeneration. What was surprising was that our vet said labs weren't needed even we asked for it. If possible what is the true cause of kidney failure? Is it dietry, constant spoiling feeding of high salt human table scraps? Food with possible traces of garlic and onions? Losing her has created a void and emptiness. We would appreciate more information on how to look for signs of ckd for our future dogs.

Hey, I totally understand your pain. I just had the same experience today... We are losing our 10 yr old and we always fed her the best diet. And she got plenty of exercise. I can't even begin to explain the depths of hurt this has caused, my wife and I are beyond devastated. We really don't know how we will function without her. This was too soon and too tragic.

What are safe training treats for dogs in early stage CKD? Is dehydrated liver a good idea or a hig NO NO?
@idunsgarden Жыл бұрын
Liver is a no no. I didn’t realize my older dachshund had CKD and she was ok but then started showing extreme symptoms after liver treats over a few weeks. It has a lot of phosphorus.

We found out our 1 year old Pitbull had stage 3 kidney failure when he went in for his neuter. He went on a medication that began with a b. I had to give him IV fluids at home, I bought kidney restorer and tinkle tonic from Amazon along with an all raw diet. Raw ground beef no chicken, chicken is higher in protein and I mixed that with carrots,green beans, spinach that I put in the ninja or baby food works too, plus unsweetened apple sauce, pure pumpkin, and 1 raw egg white. Mix that with minute white rice. Has to be the name brand. Because all other rice has additives. Then fish oil. High dose like 3000mg. We got a wonderful year and half more with him.

I Just left my dog at the Vet an hour ago to be on fluids overnight and I will pick him up tomorrow. The Vet basically said it it time. I have read too many posts that say Veterinarians are too quick to call it quits with the kidneys. The diet you have your dog on? How much does it weigh and how much do you feed him/her? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

I have a 13 year old ShihTzu, blood tests came back with somewhat elevated BUN levels. Vet claims could be dental related. The dogs teeth have mild to moderate tartar. We discussed a dental later this year, they claimed he has a luxating patella refused to grade it. I'm not trusting the Vet, the clinic was bought out and inflated their costs enormously and I just have this gut feeling about them. Help please. Dogs eats, drinks, walks daily.
