My pet Squirrel Nugget has decided WE are sleeping in

@Kathy. Unfortunately, because we rescued at such a young age (nursing) she has been imprinted and cannot be released. We tried once and she kept coming to humans. We rehab and release wild animals with a local rescue. We are trained and supervised. However, Nugget is a special case. She is being prepped to be used for educational purposes when we go to schools. She gets plenty of exercise, as she has run of the entire house. She is litter trained, I did not train her, she just prefers to use a litter box. She is fussy, she doesn't like change. She likes to play, be chased, wrestled. She let's us know when she wants something when she climbs my leg and gets in my face, "like, HELLO, I need something" I should record that..I know that she either wants to be put up or she wants her breakfast. Squirrels really don't make good pets, she needs a lot of attention and protection. If you don't have enrichment for them they get bored and can be destructive, they chew, and most can't be tamed. Nugget is a rare that is why she will be used to educate.

Awww... I love Nugget! She's precious! Right at the end, when you stopped petting her, she lifted her head, and with her eyes half closed, it's like she was saying, "Huh? Wha...? Why'd you stop?" She's absolutely adorable!

Aww. I had to raise a baby Eastern Grey Squirrel that my sweet doggie found clinging to a dead branch. I bottle raised him on soy based baby formula and even showed him how to eat acorns lol It took me 3 times to release him back into the wild and we visited every day for 2 weeks or so and he'd get a bottle feed then take off back up jis oak tree. One day he didn't come down but over the next couple of years made sporadic visits by jumping on our backs. ♡

+jk56178 Many animals actually like that type of petting better then the super-gentle-barely-there-stroke. It can be a type of comfort for them. Of course always make your judgements based on the specific animal, their mood, etc, and make sure to keep an eye out for signs of distress. :) In this case though the squirrel looks completely relaxed, and the poster most definitely knows what it likes and doesn't like.

+jg1756 One other clue in a lot of mammals is the narrowed/closed eyes. It's especially noticeable in cats, for instance, but I've seen clips with rodents that do a similar thing when they're relaxed and happy. And Lydia is right about many animals preferring a more decisive type of petting. Some humans with sensory issues can also be have problems with a very light touch and may freak out at an unexpected brush against their skin but be fine with a firm hug.

Your squirrel is so calm and sweet. Mine is an eastern grey, she has endless energy, she only calms down like this for maybe 5 seconds then starts twitching and wanting to rough play with my fingers, or play "bite and run away". Think "tag, you're it" and if I don't tag her back she comes up and bites my toes in bed. I kinda wish she was this calm, at least sometimes. Most of the time it's entertaining.

We rescued a baby squirrel once in Lenexa, Kansas, but didn't keep it because it had fallen out of a tree and we felt that professional wildlife rescue people would be better able to take care of our little guy. Our little guy was also a baby as fall was coming on. So glad you posted this.

I found four baby squirrels outside my house, brought them in and kept them for a month before having to let them go due to their size and my lack of space. But in that month I was blessed to hold and kiss those adorable squirrels all over, even on their cute little mouths. They were so sweet and docile and would just put their cute paws over their faces when they knew you’d try to pet them. They were the most adorable pets I’ve ever owned. They loved sleeping in my special tank with lots of hamster litter. They would wake up to eat every two to three hours and they were real sleepy heads. I miss them so much. Make no mistake, if you have the possibility to keep them squirrels make amazing adorable pets

Gizmo jumps down from his nest in my sweater shelf and pats my eyelids until I open them. If I close them he pats them again. Then it's time for coffee, I get a cup, he gets a tablespoon. I can touch his tail anytime but if I blow on it he gives me a dirty look. How can a squirrel give a dirty look? I'm still trying to figure that out.
