Likely to dissuade people from taking in wild animals wanting a pet. Only people licensed to care for such creatures should regularly be doing so. The fact that the license didn't include courses on how to do that job or proper resources to learn it defeats the whole point though, IMO.

Squirrels 🐿 are such amazing beautiful and extremely intelligent little fur babies. I myself have a squirrel 🐿 or we could say (she has me) 😂 My son rescued her too as a tiny baby because her mother didn’t want her, so we took care of her thinking 🤔 okay once she is old enough to survive on her own, that we would release her back into nature, well boy we’re we wrong. She decided many times that she wanted to stay, so today my chunky squirrel girl will be turning 5 years old and she’s absolutely amazing 😉

I fear, this has nothing to do with not respecting life. But most people (me included) have no idea, how to care for a baby squirrel. And mistakes in care for very young animals mostly result in very painful death for the animal. And because the vet cannot know wether the individual is really into saving the baby animal or would lose interest after one or two sleepless nights, they try to prevent suffering by euthanizing the baby.

When I was about 10 years old I found a new born squirrel on our front porch. I took it to my mother and she raised it. Sha was absolutely awesome. Mother taught her several tricks over the years. Back then there were no laws about keeping wild life s pets but I'm sure if it were today she would not have been deemed releasable. The whole family had an awesome relationship with Max and we all loved spending time with her, playing, cuddling, watching tv, napping etc. She was a gift and I'm glad I found her that day.

I'm glad you saved her when no one else would. Good Job! The vets wouldn't take her because they weren't licensed to treat wildlife, not because you weren't licensed, they lied. You needed one so you could rehab her. Our only vet here in Joplin who was wildlife licensed just closed down now we have no one. Squirrels like opossums are dime a dozen and most places won't bother with them. I had a opossum in a wire cage in my spare room for 3 winter months while treating her gash in her side with just peroxide because no one would take her. I named her stumpy because she didn't have a tail. She lived under my house for 5 years before she passed away. I have one of her great great grand kids still living under my house 🙂

My mother was one with nature. Our childhood was full of wildlife rescues. I have a vivid memory of her picking us up from school and when we got into the car I noticed she had her sweatshirt on backwards. I asked if she was okay or if she realized it. We also noticed she’d been crying. She simply said, I was leaving our neighborhood and waiting my turn at the 4 way stop sign when a huge truck ran it hitting the mother. So she got out and found the two babies, she didn’t have a towel so she turned her sweatshirt around and had them nestled in her hoodie. ❤️ we raised, raccoons, skunks, squirrels, deer, armadillos.
