I’ve been a T-12/L-1 incomplete for a little over 38 years. I regained only a tiny bit of muscle movement but 6 months post-injury I started walking with braces. On my own I was able to toss the braces after about a year simply because of learning how to manipulate my body. It’s pretty amazing what you can learn to do with whatever you have. Keep up the hard work. Upper body strength is definitely key!

I felt your pain when you were using the parallel bars. And when your right leg start shaking I started to laugh as my right leg does the same. I was a bit concerned in the beginning of the video when I notice that both your legs had quite a bit of bruising until I realized it was your socks! These old eyes of mine ain't what they used to be! Keep up the good work...

I'm a Quadriplegic (C4-5 incomplete) and I get a lot of spasms in my legs. I found a pressure point directly above and behind my knees on the outer area where it stops or reduces spasms when the muscle is squeezed. And there's a spot half way down my leg that when the muscle is pressed it causes a spasm. Every spinal cord injury is different but it's worth learning your body again. My injury happened at the end of 2007 (12 years ago) and to this day I'm still learning new things about my body and finding new ways of doing things and new ways of making my life easier. I buy possom socks to keep my feet and legs warm. Wool socks aren't the best at staying warm when you don't have the best circulation below your injury. Extending your legs on a flat surface on front of you and using something like a band to stretch your feet back is a good way to reduce spasms in your legs. I exercise my back by sitting upright and turning side to side. This helps me increase my balance and strength and helps reduce the back and shoulder cramps and spasms I get

Hey. I'm a walking C5-6. I do wear a KAFO on my right leg. It's a custom graphite brace. While I don't use a knee lock on it, I'm pretty certain that it couldn't be fitted with it. The biggest difference to the brace is that upper frame of the brace goes around the front of my thigh and then the lower frame goes around my calf. To put it on you step through it at the knee. So when you're standing, instead of the straps going around the front of the thigh and pulling you back into the brace, when you're standing your weight is keeping the brace in place. The only thing the straps end up doing is holding the brace in place when you're sitting. I've had 2 of them made over the years. They'll last 10 times longer than plastic and aluminium framed braces. Keep in mind that the braces you have are made by bending aluminium bars into "about" the right shape. The composite made brace is built exactly to the shape of your leg. They look really cool too. The biggest complaint I had about the aluminium brace was that when I'd fall (which I do a lot of) the bars can get bent and they keep having to be bent back into the right shape. The graphite will never bend and it'll certainly never fail. The only thing that needs replacing is the straps and the brace lining. The straps are a soft padded material. They don't need to have the thick course strap, because the support isn't coming from the strap, it's coming from the frame. The straps just hold the brace in place and that's it.

Now l can do the most needed things: l can buy my food and can go to my doc, l can visit my best friends, who live a few hundred m nearby. That's more than l could do the last 5 years without. Don’t give up. I was hit by a drunk driver when I was 21, I’m now 73 and still walking with AFO’s that were made back in 1973. I did physical exercises five days a week for 10 months. I went from a wheelchair, Walker, crutches, one crutch and no aids. I’ve climb mountains and travelled all through the U.S. most of it by myself. I was told by my surgeon and specialist I would be in a wheelchair all my life. I didn’t listen and continue to walk. Recently I needed to see some neurosurgeon’s, who tested me and couldn’t figure out how I was walking with my level of disability. Belief in the good Lord and never gave up. God Bless you. Happy Trails.❤❤❤

My son and I we're in a horrific car accident on May 18th 2020. My son was four years old at the time he will be five next month. He is now diagnosed as paralyzed from the waist down. Multiple of his organs got damaged inside of his abdomen but they seem to be healing well. He still has a colostomy bag and is straight cathed to urinate. He's in a wheelchair and can't do much for himself, but he is so happy and strong-minded. Due to the car accident I had my knees and in one hip replaced. My femur was replaced with a metal rod my arm was replaced with rods pins screws and Bolts from wrist to Elbow they didn't even think I was going to be able to move it. Luckily I have 70 to 80% usage of that arm. I am still in a wheelchair and my son is as well. I tickled his foot the other day and his toes moved😂. He said he couldn't feel me tickling him, he still moved his toes though that's what I'm holding on to. When I tickle the chubby part of his leg he laughs. I saw you do your physical therapy and I'm now crying as I watch it. I'm not crying out of sadness I'm crying out of Hope and happiness. I hope one day my son is there as well. He just had the accident May 18th and they're already talking about cutting his spine open to put electrodes and stuff in there to help him walk and I'm scared! I have nobody to talk to that understands what's going on!!! If you could message me back I would greatly appreciate it. I also have an older son he will be eight next month and unfortunately he has become my legs and arms. My oldest has had a lot more put on him then any child his age should. Same goes for my little one. If you have time please reach out! My name is Brandy and I'm from New Jersey, USA. I could really use someone to talk to!

I'm not an orthopedist but I do wear a KAFO leg brace on my right leg due to paralysis - I believe you definitely need new leg braces. You need more knee support to keep you upright, and the length of the brace I believe should come up right under your bottom - at least the back. I would post a pic of mine if they allowed. I know they arent cheap, and you need 2, but I think they would make a huge difference. I believe you got these from a friend - that's like wearing a suit/dress that was especially tailored for someone else.

Hello from Tunisia 🌸 My question is : I know the braces are locking your knees from bending but what is supporting your body weight for so long without any leg functions & a complete injury ?

The human skeleton is intended to support a lot with proper 'stacking' of your bones. My legs are supporting most of my weight. My arms help, but mostly for stabilization.
