Just one piece of advice from a 45 year airline veteran...your one and only motivation to become a pilot should be the passion for flying. If you go in for the money or for any other reason you are doomed. Being an airline pilot is extremely demanding, constantly tested and graded, studying all the time just to keep up, so if you don't LOVE it then trust me, you will be miserable. I wish you all the best, it's the best profession in the world, and as I tell people, I've never worked a day in my life, I just lived my dream of flying...blue skies

@@vortexgaming8761 Exactly. Worked through all the ratings. Payed as I went, no loans. Taught for 4 years, almost 1400 hours of dual given. Then two different regionals flying E175's and on to a major. 737 initially and now the 777. I leave for Seoul tonight.

Bravo to you for perusing your dream while you can still make it happen. I started flight training at age 66 and got my PPL at 67 (3 years ago). Now at 70, instrument rated, and I'm a co-owner of a Cessna 172 with my son and we are having a blast with $100 hamburger runs, flying all the grandkids and last year flew to Oshkosh and participated in the Cessna mass arrival. Nothing is impossible. I was homeless, living in a cave on the coast of South Africa a few years ago. I have since started three small businesses and have also started my PPL training a month ago. Although affording it is going to be a massive challenge, I am up for it. And I am not stopping there either. My life's dream was to be a Flight Instructor. I love teaching people and I love flying. And at almost 52, I am chasing that dream. So keep the faith brother, nothing, and I do mean NOTHING is impossible.

You did your research on how-to attain an airline job👍🏻. Motivation is the key to achieving it! Also, at retirement age of 65 (may soon be increased to 68), you can get a corporate flying job as captain. I did all that you are working on, when I was 16. In 1978, at age 25, I landed my airline job, starting as f/o on the DC-9. Fast forward to my 65th birthday in 2018, I retired with 28 years on the B767, having had a 40 year airline career. What a ride, and the experiences I had are memorable. Now at 70, I fly my 1947 v tail Bonanza.

I'm about to take my Instrument check ride and just crossed the 700hr mark tonight! Midlife career change is scary but I have received great advise and encouragement by my friends that are well established in the industry! Let's do this!

You have time on your side!! There are numerous schools that have approved financing packages from Fannie Mae…so you don’t have to have the cash. Of course, you do still need a way to pay for your life while you train.

Hey I just stumbled across this video but I want to put my opinion out there well cuz its the internet and I can lol. I am a pilot at a 135 company. I fly a PC-12. I am a young gun only 22 and also a CFI and CFII and I want to say I applaud your ambition but I truly do believe your timeline is a little skewed. I went through pilot training pretty fast. 14 months from no experience to CFII with little breaks in between. Saying you're gonna complete flight school in 4 months is pretty much not possible. I dont wanna say impossible but its pretty damn unlikely. I would really average if you're on top of everything, passing every checkride first try, no failures, flying legitametly 5 hours a day 5 days a week, 9 months to complete training and thats because theres variables to get in the way. Plane down for maintenance ? flight cancelled. Weather cancellations? Checkride cancelations? plane availability? it gets really messy with variables trying to get this 4 month timeframe in. This is not even accounting the other 1250 flight hours you will need after you get your commercial single engine. You will still need your commercial multi and your CFI. Having went through flight school and instructed and seen it first hand the average time for someone to get from zero experience to Airline pilot is about 3 years. I actually got my private 2 years ago on saturday and am only sitting at around 700 hours and thats after flying a pretty substantial amount every month. I have about a little over a year before I hit ATP minimums to go to the airlines. I am not just speaking on my own experience but others who have gone through it recently. 18 months from zero to airline pilot is practically impossible. You would need to fly a minimum of 83 hours a month every single month for 18 months for that number to work. I do believe in your success and that you can do it having trained a 68 year old PPL student but your timeframe is very off. I do have some questions. What ratings are you doing at this school? PPL IR CSEL CMEL CFI CFII MEI? is it 141? do they have specific lowered hour requirements? for example at the school i went too our 141 training course allowed me to get my commercial single engine at 160 hours and CFI at 200. Do you plan to instruct? anyways good luck in the adventure and remember Aviation is not a sprint its a marathon.

YOU… MOTIVATE ME!! I’m about to get my PPL and have been asking what am I going to do after this. Commercial will take a lot of time and money but after watching your videos, I am going for it. I’m as old as you are as well. Wanted to go to the Naval Academy when I was in high school but was not accepted because “I was Duke Mitchell’s kid”. Hey Trent! I just discovered you and your page. I love this video and what you're doing I had to subscribe. Buddy I believe in you and I'm inspired! I just turned 41 and I've dreamed of flying my entire life. About 3 months ago my younger brother (age 37) decided we're going for our dream of becoming airlines pilots. But one of the things we did a ton of research on was this very topic...is it too late for me and we, like you have received a ton of enc from the pilot community. You got this man! You totally got this buddy! Use the negative comments as fuel for the fire that burns in you brother! At the moment we are still researching and trying to find a way to pay for training and also deciding what school we want to attend, but someday soon we'll be sharing the sky together and hopefully we'll meet and sit back and laugh about how people told us we would fail. 46 years old with commercial multi instrument. I started in my 20’s right after 9/11 and the aviation industry went to crap. Went to one of the ‘bigger’ schools in Florida came out with a bunch of ratings a few hundred hours but back then it wasn’t feasible to keep waiting for things to rebound. Had to move onto other things in life but have recently started to get the ‘bug’ again. This video and all the information you’ve collected and shared has really got me thinking as well. My age has been my only worry but from what your saying it doesn’t really have to be. Keep on keeping on with your dreams and thanks so much for sharing!!

Trent, This is absolutely awesome. I was just starting to put the idea of flying professionally away. I am 44, my wife and I earn very nice incomes together, and as our kids are 17,18, and 19, they are beginning to transition to grown up life. When I consider being able to help them get started and continuing to feed retirement, my thoughts tend to lean more conservative. The inner dialogue goes something like "stay with the sure thing and just fly for fun". I work in the industry as an A&P, and have done so for the past 23 years. Senior maintenance professionals, while they don't exactly make pilot pay, they tend to do pretty well. If I am being honest however, while I love what I do, it was a secondary choice. When I entered aviation, it was to pursue flying, but 9/11 had just happened and we all know how that impacted the industry. The next time I was ready to pursue flying was around 2008-2009...again, not so good. I finally got my private pilot certificate in 2015, and bought an airplane which I am still flying. I got my instrument rating a couple of years ago, and have been pursuing commercial in starts and stops as life allows since with little progress. I have been considering punching out, finishing up Commercial, Multi, CFI and CFII and instructing to time build. While this would be a huge pay cut, it seems to be the only way to move forward in any meaningful way. So, I too am of the understanding that while it is certainly not too late to have the necessary ROI, the clock is ticking. Also, like you, I have little interest in going to the majors. If I am being honest, my interest really lies in cooperate flying, but it seems that there is more opportunity, better training, and value in experience by going to the airlines, and cooperate flying will still be an option after 65. Plus, I would bring a ton of experience from the 121 world. I said all of this to ask if maybe you'd be interested in sharing your plan for building time after your 4 months of training and what your expectations are there. I started my pilot training 25 years ago, but some events in life kept me from finishing. For me, money doesn’t really matter. My business is successful and can provide for me. I'm about to turn 50, and have just finished putting my oldest son through school at a part 141 school on his way to become a pilot (he's currently a CFI). I would love to make a career change and do this (I do agree, hanging out in the regional would be perfect). The trouble I can't figure out how to crack is to quit my current (well paying) career to make this leap.. the long term works (once you make it to a regional, you're making enough to live on), but the SHORT term is hard.. to train to get PP --> Instrument --> Commercial --> Multi is one thing (and if you can quit your job to laser focus on those that's one thing) but then AFTER that you'd still need to spend a few years building to 1,500hrs... I don't want to become a CFI in the meantime, and it feels like you need around 500hrs to get any sort of reasonably regular job to build from.. so getting over that hurdle of supporting myself and my wife for a few years while my current income has gone away (while working on all the things to get the minumums for an ATP) seems daunting

I guess it all comes down to what is more important to you, your annual income, each year or the type of work you are engaged in day-to-day. It definitely does not have to take a few years to get to 1599 hours. My mentor did it in one year. As for getting to 500 hours, if you have a healthy income, go buy a share of an airplane and just fly yourself around. Thanks so much for watching and taking a moment to comment! 🙌

@JayJay-fd8yy There were sections asking about number patterns and whether or not you knew the difference between .01 and .10 It was section by section. Initially I didn't think I passed but I did and was very surprised. United did say I could re-apply if I wanted but I only have like 7 years after training to offer a 121 carrier so I'm thinking maybe try my luck in the corporate or cargo pool next.

Hey Trent, awesome job knocking out the written exams. I love to see those done so that the student can focus on the flying (and studying for the oral exam). One minor note about that... my personal recommendation is to take the IGI written exam as well. It's so close to the IRA and FIA written that you shouldn't need more prep. Why take the IGI? It's just nice to have it on your cert/airman registry and this way it's done and you never have to make time for it again. Note: You do need to take the FOI to lock in that IGI. Sounds like you have a great plan for your flying career. Looking forward to seeing how things progress. One last thing. The aviation industry changes quickly. COVID hit and pilots weren't needed. Then there was a resurgence with obscene bonuses offered. Now class dates are pushed way back just about everywhere. Long story short, don't let the 'pendulum' stop you from chasing your dream, just don't count on it being the same climate once you get your hours. Keep at it and enjoy the journey!

@@trent_dyrsmid Long story short, the IGI isn't really required. If you become a CFI, your CFI cert trumps your IGI. But the IGI doesn't really expire like a CFI cert does and I just like collecting credentials if I can. And this is an easy one to collect. I did my IGI just before COVID and then did my AGI and FOI during COVID and had a DPE file the paperwork. Instantly became a ground instructor before I finished my Instrument rating!

Great content Trent. I have been debating the pilot career in my late 40s. Many factors to calculate starting from scratch for at least 2 years with virtually no income and retirement contribution, in my case. With that said, it's never too late! Congrats on your accomplishments!

Before anything; THANK YOU! This was probably the most meaningful and encouraging video I’ve seen in years (not hyperbole). Could you record a path from zero to where you presently are; courses taken, etc. Also, what were the steps to get accepted into the OH flight school? From a personal note, I’m unsure how the algorithm knew that I needed to see this, but here we are! I’m 51 and desperately need a career change. Flying was my first dream/love. Other than understanding the basics of flight (Thanks to yearlong FAA membership), I have zero flight time, etc. - maybe there’s hope after all. Thank you again!!

You will be learning for the rest of your aviation career. I’m 48 and just earned my commercial certificate earlier this week. I’m starting to work on my CFI lesson plans (I have all my CFI and CFII writtens completed). I like you am working and going to the airlines and I think I’ll be happy just getting to fly jets for my living that who it’s with isn’t as important as the QOL aspects. Keep on keeping on and make sure you remain flexible as this journey can and will throw you curveballs.

After 25+ years in Education and at 52, I took a hard look at going to a Carribean med school or getting back into flying. I'm aging out on both fronts. I started at 42. I’m 44 and working as a CFI. and at this rate, getting my ATP by end of this year or next year. Just make your plans, just leave room for unexpected situations. Weather, MX, etc while you build your time. I’m with you where I’m open to the idea of both regionals and majors. Whatever will be better for me, but at this point I am leaning towards majors. I made a comment on your other vid. I'm 51 and have my private... but I'm changing careers. I'm currently a SkyWest Cadet. I would recommend looking into it... it seems like a no brainer to get tied into them... plus if your school is a primer school... they give back $17,500 reimbursement once you start flying with them. Plus first year FO is $95K... so that's over $112 your first year. AND.... they are upgrading to Capt as soon as you hit your 1000 hrs. At the last meeting they said guys were doing it in less than 2 years FO to Capt

@@trent_dyrsmid Yep. 1000hrs, an you can upgrade. There was a small rumor going around that they weren't hiring since new FO couldn't get sim time. BUT... the realty is, they had so many upgrades, that the sim and classrooms were full of FO-Capt upgrades. We were talking about it a little a couple days ago on the last pilot workshop. They aren't mandatory, but sign up for them. THe first hour is the lecture, and the second is Q&A. The next one is may 18th.

@@trent_dyrsmid Oh... one more thing. the new SWC (SkyWest Charter) is budling up. I fly out of KJST and there is 4 of the jets sitting on the apron. They are hiring Capt's... but the word is, low hour cadets will be able to apply for FO. Since it's part 135, the 1500 rule doesn't apply. Keep your eye open for that.

Thanks so much. I started at 57 and I don't care about people telling me I can't do something. I am in a part 141 school. Like you I have another income and I just want to fly. I have a Master's degree in IT. My office space is a view out of the front window of an airplane. Us older pilots have great work ethics, study habits and a very focused vision. I am in instrument right now and will have all of my certs by August, then into teaching.

I truly wish you have a great and successful career. Having started my journey to become a professional pilot 12 years ago, I consider myself extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to become a Captain at a Legacy airline recently. Over my years at the airlines, I have flown with many pilots who were double furloughees after 9/11 and then again during the recession in late 2000’s. Within the last 20 years, the profession has not been anything like it is today and because of the low pay and career prospects it has created this shortage we see today. Much like the stock market the last few years, there is a rush to get in while the getting is good. How long will it last? I’m not sure anyone really knows. But the good news is there are a staggering number of pilots retiring within the next decade. So barring an economic calamity or some other large event, hiring should keep on a pretty good pace and people starting now should have a good career. However, if you were to ask an airline pilot 4 years ago if someone would get hired at a legacy 18 months after starting at a regional, they would call you crazy. Again, I truly hope everyone that decides to become a pilot has a successful career but want to remind everyone that if/when travel demand decreases furloughs/pay reductions are a real possibility.

people need to heed well what you say....I was hired in 2000...hiring BOOM...my company said they were going to hire 1000 a year for as long as they could see....then 9/11 hit...I was on the street shortly there after....I was furloughed for 5 years....then they started recalling...then 2008 and more furloughed.....pay has stagnated....it is all a gamble....I have been at a major for 23 years...becoming a pilot was the worst career decision I made.....

A lot of my co workers are full time and average 60 per month and they are there all day. Another co-worker is a Sky West FO and he said that the guys that had their own planes or are banner towers are the ones that failed out of the program. You need to make sure you are extremely instrument proficient.

Wow, love what you are doing and really glad I found your channel. I’m also 53 and live in Idaho. Just got my PPL last fall. I never considered a new career as a pilot, but what you are doing is certainly motivating me to consider it. You have my attention Trent and I’ll be checking constantly for new content. Question? Do you already have a first class medical? I had to renew my medical last January and my blood pressure wasn’t to high but higher than 130/85 and my AME told me that it is ok to take a blood pressure med. I did get on a med for it but I don’t need anything more than my 3rd class for what I fly currently.

I can see how you’re successful in business. The way you analyze, get peoples opinion who are where you want to be and actually break down the steps to being a pilot. I’m currently doing the same thing, making check lists on the pros and cons of each school I’d want to attend. Figuring out what I could do while I’m a pilot and have time off etc. How could you not want to fly 40,000ft in the clouds!!!

Hell yes! So happy to see you going for this, Trent! I turn 53 in December. I'm a Detroit-based CFI with approx. 1,350 hours (1,000hrs earned just this past 12 months). Like you, I'm in the SkyWest Pilot Pathway program and am currently going through their pilot application process. All things going well, I could very well be in an FO class by the end of this year. My wife and children are fully supportive of my career change and we've been financially able to make it happen which has removed a lot of potential stress and uncertainty. You are never too old to follow your dreams! Git 'er done! Perhaps I'll meet you one day soon flying the SkyWest line?!!
