My mom is from India and though she is the staunchest supporter of Black Rights she hates her own colour and my colour and thinks Black is less beautiful. This same woman fights against unjust legal persecution of black people. I have realised from experience it just isn’t simple....my mom’s culture in particular has been made to hate itself and anyone resembling them by the colonial past. My dad’s culture brutalised and continues to make life hell for POC. I try to do my part to help in any way I can.

Thanks for sharing. I relate to this a lot, in Egypt there is so much colorism and the lighter skinned you are the more beautiful you are believed to be so this does a lot of damage to the darker members of our community and is the cause of a lot of discrimination. Another thing is how there is almost no representation of actual Egyptian looking people in our own media - it's all very whitewashed. This really upsets me, but as you said- these are very complicated issues and while you can be an ardent supporter of a movement, an intersectional feminist for example, it can still be difficult to live by those ideals and not internalize all the patriarchal racist bs you have been fed your whole life. I think for POC, it is important to try and live by the values we believe in but also to be self-compassionate. There's no real use in making yourself feel guilty for having internalised these prejudices as long as you do your best not to project them on others.

I hear you on this. I’m a Cuban-American person. It’s this odd space of having conditional privilege. I appreciate your vulnerability and honesty in this video. Definitely gonna add these books to my reading list. 💕

The rain forest in Brazil is burning and thousands of square miles burned in the USA and all that seems so overwhelming society's problems & the current contagion, with 2/3 of the fish in the seas gone since 1972. Alienation is the pat-answer/ reason for all of the society problems described here by the presenter, not that this responder condones any of that. the 1619 project in the USA is getting disparaged as part of the group-think. Palestine is the tragedy driving a plethora of problems in s.w. asia.

Checking your privilege is when you go back and read Plato's Republic before you start talking about politics.

I appreciate you very much but in the last century it was far more dangerous to be a Jew than to be a Palestinian. I wish for peace between us and I want the Palestinian people to have independence, but the extremist voices among the Palestinians strengthen the extremists among the Israelis. life of Jews matters. please don't see me as your enemy
