Thanks for watching, I'm glad it was helpful. Surprisingly, this wasn't more popular on the AT compared to other brands. I probably only saw about 10 other people with it but not a single person disliked the tent. I'm pretty sure you'll be very happy with it.

I’m still liking my Lunar Solo after two years now. It’s hard to go wrong with a well made tent for $250. Thanks for the great video.

I agree. For the price, you can't get much better of a tent. I'll use it until it falls apart.

Dear Mr. Morton, Thank you very much for posting this very informative review of the Lunar Solo by 6 Moon Design. It helped me a lot in better understanding the system, & not to mention all the tid-bits of your experience, which to an inexperienced hiker like myself are golden nuggets of wisdom. Also thank you for posting the links to the various equipment you referenced in the video.

I have had mine for 4 years now. I also have three other tents, but every time I am at the point of packing my rucksack, I end up putting in the lunar solo. It just works.

Thinking of getting this because of the interior space. I use single person semi-free standing tents and the interiors are often too small. The Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL1 is a bit wider for a single person, but it's relatively heavy and the door operation and awning are just too much extra stuff that's not needed.

I think this one really fills the gap between the really small 1P and too much space with a 2P. I've had a 23 inch pad, shoes, food bag, plus all of my gear in it without over crowding.

I actually own both these tents,I have had the lunar solo for 3 years and the Copper Spur ul 1 for almost a year. I love my lunar solo,the only reason I bought the copper spur is it was on sale and I had a bunch of gift cards and my REI dividend I got it for 150 bucks. I would not pay full price. REI has sales all the time 20% off. I live close to the AT and up north there are more platforms and a freestanding tent comes in handy for that. As far as weight they are closer than you think. The lunar solo is 26 oz. My hiking poles are a pound and stakes are 3 ozs. Total 45 ozs. I use the second pole to pull out foot end and a stick to pull out head end. The copper spur ul 1 weight is 2 pounds 3oz. with stakes 35oz. I don’t bring poles with copper spur. I am not good at math but my shelter is heavier when I carry the lunar solo. Pros and cons to everything. I only open up copper spur like a normal tent,I don’t mess with the awning,so no fiddling. The copper spur is great with all the pockets to store stuff and a huge one above your feet. I put my pack above my head inside tent. The lunar solo you could almost fit 2 people. Plenty of room for gear on the floor and has a little pocket near door. I enjoy using both tents. Different tents for different trips.

@@Teddy-fx6fx no matter what tent I use backpacking I always have trekking poles with me. For someone who always uses trekking poles it makes sense to use a trekking pole tent and save the extra weight of tent poles.

Been using my lunar for 9 years...silnylon. Nice review. For a cheaper option I have the 3F UL Lanshan 1 [2021]. It's double walled, nylon and seam sealed. Other than that it's the same tent for half the price. The Lanshan 1 Pro single wall poly is the same tent but $100 dollars cheaper.

I've been using my lunar solo for a year. Only issue has been similar to yours when I misjudged the wind direction... not so much fun! tent has been great otherwise, I bring a sea to summit hand towel which weighs nothing and does a great job getting rid of the condensation

@@gregmortonoutdoors I have a really old one which is still in excellent condition. I carry the Gatewood cape on my day hikes and really like that too. When paired with the serenity net it’s a reliable multi purpose shelter. I always enjoy hearing other hikers praise these affordable and functional tents. I bought a Durston X-Mid solid for cold wet weather and it’s my new favorite. However it is much heavier than the Lunar solo, but warmer too.

Do you need to buy a ground sheet separately to use this tent? If so, what situations call for a ground sheet vs using the tent on its own? Is a ground sheet the same as a footprint? Thank you!
@gregmortonoutdoors
@gregmortonoutdoors 9 ай бұрын
Hi there and thanks for watching. Ground sheets and footprints are the same thing, just different terms. I would recommend using one with this tent since the fabric is thin and not as strong as DCF. SMD has a couple of options on their web page, however, for the majority of my AT hike I use a shower curtain from a dollar store. I cut off the magnets and the thicker part of the curtain with the rod pocket. It wasn't heavy at all and worked pretty well.

SMD creates tykvek sheets for their tents, I use one for my Nemo 3P tent & they work wonders. Better to have to replace your floor print vs your tent… Definitely considering getting the Lunar Solo just for a lighter pack & less volume inside the actual tent which is good during colder weather.
