During kayak trips on the Flathead River, and hikes in the Cabinet Mountains and Goat Rock WIlderness: my Solo has been a terrific tent for summer trips. There's plenty of room for me (6-3") and my pack. Set up is easy, especially compared to erecting one of my four-season tents during high winds on winter climbs.

Nice video! You can also completely replace that front anchor line with a longer one. I do leave the doors closed when pitching and just follow the angle of the doors or get it pulled as far out as I can. Make sure to replace with reflective line so your buddies don't trip over it. :)

The weird thing is that on 6 Moon Designs website, on this tent is they show the sequence of staking out the tent one way ... but then there's a video where the guy does it differently; as a matter of fact, their video shows that they want you to stake out that rear center FIRST, not last, like in your video! Also, there's a bunch of different KZbin videos and they all show a different way of going about it! I knew I was going to have to play with this to figure out the best staking/guying out process, but your video is extremely helpful and I believe I'm going to try your plan tomorrow. Thanks for a great, concise, well thought out, and well edited, video!

You linked some other videos you’ve done about the Lunar Solo during this video... one request: could you please provide links to those videos in your long description? Great info here. As a fellow Southern Californian, it’s great to watch your videos about local adventures. Since being a kid (long ago), Idyllwild has been a primary destination. Camping, rock climbing, backpacking. Great to open my eyes to other locations. Next trip I want to plan is the Trans Catalina. Next Spring though, when it’s green. Bob

tip.............either, buy new or add an extension to front guy line.. been testing the set up out in the garden. same can be said for all tie out points, the longer they are the better. obviously the manufacturers might of lengthened them to begin with but, every gram counts in the lightweight tent market.

Great video. Was much clearer and more useful than the directions that came with the tent. I have one question though. I have found that the guy line puts stress on the vestibule zipper, and have had to constantly move the guy line over before closing it. I’m wondering if this is common to all tarp tents, this one, or if I have done something wrong when staking out the guy line. Like, should it not be straight out from the center? Thanks!
@TubaSolotheHiker
@TubaSolotheHiker 4 жыл бұрын
Hey there Chris. Thank you for the kind words. At initial thought I'm thinking that you may have the main line too far out. Bring the main line stake in about 3-5 inches to release the pressure on the zipper and then adjust the front two corners to account for the slack in the vestibule. Hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi steve, just wondering is there any difference between the new silpoly vs the old silnylon other than the material. You say it is a little taller, any thing else thats is different/better than the old one. Is it worth upgrading to the new one if you have the old silnylon.
@TubaSolotheHiker
@TubaSolotheHiker 11 ай бұрын
For whatever it’s worth. Sil polyester in my opinion is vastly better than sil nylon unless you’re in a super dry environment. Then it really doesn’t matter, but yeah. I’ve been very impressed with all the Sil polyester shelters I’ve used. Very much worth the minor increase in weight.

@TubaSolotheHiker

I actually do not remember the length. I would encourage you to take a good long piece of guy line, setup the tent in your yard and measure it out to what seems correct. I would leave a little bit extra in case you need to ever wrap that guy line around a rock.

About a year late but have a question about the main guyline. Do you run it out through the vent or underneath the doors? I have seen it both ways...I bought an LE used and the guyline was directed out of the vent and runs a over the doors. Is there a right way or advantage to either one?
@TubaSolotheHiker
@TubaSolotheHiker 3 жыл бұрын
Technically you could run it either way. I run it under the doors as that is the design of the Lunar Solo. If done properly it will give rigidity to the doors when closed. With that said you have tents like the haven tarp which is designed so that the main lines is completely on the outside. If you stick to design alone then I would run the line under the doors for the Lunar Solo. Hope that helps.

How does the vestibule doors attach to the front guy line? I’ve got a black plastic hook on a short yellow loop but not sure how to use (without a biner as an anchor)? Cheers
@TubaSolotheHiker
@TubaSolotheHiker Жыл бұрын
The end of the door should have a small piece of webbing that you attached the hook to and then slide the prusik knot down to tighten up the doors.
@majic2802
@majic2802 Жыл бұрын
@@TubaSolotheHiker thank you. There is a very short webbing loop at end of each door on my tent, that does just fit on the hook but is quite fiddly. Perhaps I should add a small loop to the webbing that better fits the hook. Still finding the prusik doesn’t lock down on the guy line tightly. Maybe not meant to …

Hello Rikki. The issue of the the floor sagging would be related to the height of the pole. I've found that the pole needs to be a bit higher than suggested on the SMD website. I'd go about 2-inches/5cm higher than what is stated. If its 49" I'd go 51"/130cm. Also you need to make sure that the pole is relatively straight. Not perfectly straight; it can have a slight lean but mostly straight. Hope that helps.

Hello there. I've used both poly cro and tyvek with great success. This last adventure I went to (Catalina Island) I had forgotten a ground sheet and my Trekker did just fine. I was quite surprised. But despite nothing happening to the tent floor, I'm still planning on using my poly cro sheet. (Assuming I dont forget it again...lol)

I just don’t get why the vestibule area of the tent has to be so high off the ground? Seems like you would really have draft issues with this thing and potential wetness in heavy, blowing rains.
@TubaSolotheHiker
@TubaSolotheHiker 2 жыл бұрын
You are correct. The tent can get breezy. The good thing is that most places will have a rock wall, bush or wooded area to use as cover. With that said, my 2nd experience in my Lunar Solo (at the time) was on sandy saddle kind of out in the open. The wind blew like crazy and got fine sand into everything. The design is not perfect but the lesson I learned that night was "do better at site selection" LOL...happy adventuring.

@TubaSolotheHiker

The two most important part of setting up a Lunar Solo is the height of the pole and make sure that the back is not tilted downward. To avoid the downward slope of the back you have to leave enough slack in the back corner lines and don't set your back middle till the end. You nail those to things every time and you're sett up will be pretty much perfect.

Hey, can't you simply peg the 4 opposing corners and out the pole in? Then peg the front guy line followed by the rear?
@TubaSolotheHiker
@TubaSolotheHiker 4 жыл бұрын
He Rob, great question. My overall thoughts on that methodology is that you would need leave the tent loose so that it can be pitched correctly. Leaving it loose produces variables; did you leave it loose enough, is it too loose. One side is more loose than the other, you pitched it too tight now the pole can't extend to proper height, etc.... The idea with the pitch method in this video is that it allows you to pull the tent taught and produces a systematic and repeatable process with little to no variables. That was the biggest annoyance I had with the Lunar Solo. I'd pitch the tent and then I went around (what seemed like 50 times) making micro adjustments to the pitch until it was right. Once I got this pitch method down there has been little need to adjust the tent further once its up. If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to ask.
@TheNomadicTrader
@TheNomadicTrader 4 жыл бұрын
@@TubaSolotheHiker I had a similar tent, and I was able to peg all 4 corners making sure they were taught but leaving some adjustment in the straps. Then extend the pole to 130cm, pop the pole in and peg down all the lines. It then needed a quick tighten. Worth giving it a shot buddy.

@TubaSolotheHiker

Hello Rikki. I don't understand all the mathematics of it, but I've found that perfectly vertical doesn't do well with the pitch in general so I shoot for slightly leaned back. Hope that helps.

Yes, your pitching method works most of the time depending on how level the ground is and wind conditions. I have used my Lunar Solo 6 times in the AZ high desert in windy conditions and it took me about about 15 - 20 minutes on average trying to get a good pitch, most often without success. This is the most finicky, sensitive, cantankerous, aggravating tent to set up that I have ever owned so I have decided to get rid of it.
