Good morning, Scott! Before I jumped into DE shaving, I did use a pre-shave oil, but I was also using a soap an brush for perhaps 9 years. Thankfully, I dumped canned goo. Since I'm mostly a morning shaver, I wash my face in the shower as the main prep. I tend to bloom like you do: harder soaps like Soap Commander get bloomed and softer do not. Brush selection is normally one of my two Plissofts when I need a quick lather. I'm still working on my badger, boar, and horse brush technique. The difference is I usually will pick out the razor, soap, and aftershave the night before; jus to expedite my morning routine and get out the door. Blade choice is predicated on how my face feels.

Great video...sometimes getting back to basics and reviewing or refreshing my routine is just what I need.

I don't have as many choices. Working on it. Soak my brush while in the shower. I may or may not bloom the soap depending on what type is it. ( I do have a few soaps.) Have razor ready with a sharp blade. Simple.

Strop, bloom soap & soak brush while I shower, use the bloom water on head and face, lather, and go

I only shave my head but my pre shave routine is to have a hot shower and soak my head for a few minutes and then I place a small amount of shaving cream in my hand and work it into my scalp and keave that to sit for a minute or two. Then I rinse and get out the shower I find that using the shaving cream instead of shampoo or shower gel really softens the hairs and makes shaving so much easier

Nice Scott, mine is a little different 1. Remind my little Ben not to poke me in the side and shout "Beep!" when I'm using my shavette 2. Wet face 3. Make Ben a glass of juice 4. Apply pre shave 5. Fix something on Ben's computer 6. ... Yes, relaxation is very important 🙄

I always soak my brush and warm my blade. Almost always shower first and use Proraso pre shave cream the green one. It's the only one I have so it's my go to for now.

I've used Proraso pre-shave as well. I had the white. It's nice stuff, at least to help wake you up, if anything. Do you think warming your blade helps?

The Clean Shaver. My father is friends with an ex butler, who used to straight razor shave. He advised to warm the blade. A cold blade I think would pull a bit over the bristles and a hot blade will cut you so he said. I guess try it and see. It would be interesting to see what you think.

First, I do wash very well my face with shaving cream, then I do soak my face with water as hot as I can stand, put shaving cream on again and just shave.

thank you so much for this! normally what I'll do is shower and use a glove scrubby thing my wife has to exfoliate, then once I'm out I will use a Preshave stick from PAA, then after my lather I will shave .

I always disinfect my razor and blade 1st even if its new one by dipping assembled razor with the blade into shaving bowl that was filled with boiling water. This also helps to warm up razor and the bowl. Once water temperature comes down enough, so it's ok to put brush in, I just leave it there to soak and use razor to hold the brush in place down at the bottom, in my mind it soaks better that way. Brush handle is plastic, so I don't have to worry about it being submerged. Meanwhile, I clean my face with face wash\scrub and apply preshave, normally I use proraso green but if I want to feel extra fancy, I use osma preshave oil and apply towel soaked in hot water for minute or two. That's how I get my perfect and smooth shave with R41 and Kai blades almost every time, as sometimes I still mess up and apply some pressure, so my face ends up being "chewed" a bit by the razor

I have a rather detailed routine for my pre-shave! I fill my dual chamber scuttle with scalding hot water, and plug it up. Then I fill the bowl with hot water and soak all brush types to warm them up and soak up water. Even if it is a synthetic because it still will warm up. I may put some hot water on my shave soap to bloom it a bit. Then I cover my face with a light coating of warm water and feel my whisker growth. I then rub/scrap my face with a nicely scented artisan soap, getting it deep in my whiskers - not trying to lather, but using it like a shaving stick. Shower and scrub the soap in my face that I applied earlier. Remove my brush and twist out the excessive water. Empty the scuttle if it cooled down and refill as necessary. Sometimes I press some of the main shave soap in the warm scuttle or will just leave it in the tub. Rub shave secret into my face. Dump bloom water, if used, in palm and rub into my face. Scrap pre-shave soap over my whiskers and use my brush to rub in a bit, getting my face wet with a light lather. Load brush off the main shave soap in the tub or scuttle. Lather brush in the scuttle and some on the face.

Good point about the synthetic warming up. Interesting that you apply the washing soap prior to shaving.

Sorry, but maybe I was not clear. First I wash my face with a nice artisan washing soap. I like to rub it hard into my whiskers with just enough water to coat my face. I wash it out and scrub in the shower. I think a face wash is pretty normal. Then I typically apply Shave Secret oil on my washed face after the shower. Then I apply a glycerin based pre-shave soap like PAA Ice rubbed into my whiskers. Then I wet my face and scrub with the shaving soap bloom water and/or my wet brush and hands if I did not bloom. Finally I apply the shaving soap with my brush. I know I'm crazy. Just like a good prep.

I like blooming my soap as well. I always put hot water on the puck then get in the shower. I noticed you put the cover back on the soap. Does it make difference? I always leave it off.

I usually put the lid back on to preserve the heat of the water on the soap.

Loved the video for a newby like me, but still, blooming the soap, caused my soap to "crack" around the edges. Thus, causing the soap to have a half life.

WTF way too many options. When you have to have furniture to hold all your shaving options then you have gone too far.

I've been doing that for years and have NEVER had a problem. Of course, I also dry my brushes thoroughly with the knot hanging down after shaving.
