Folks - Keep in mind this video is meant to light in spirit and not super serious. Although I don’t like tins for my use case, I respect your decision to use or purchase whatever you like. I ask for the same courtesy when it comes to my purchasing decisions and opinions. In terms of environmental concerns, I encourage you to research pollution associated with mining, metal production, smelting, etc. Even the recycling process for both metals and plastics produces pollutants. Please keep in mind there are fiscal considerations involved with the use of metals or plastics. Brian from Signature Soaps told me UK artisans will be facing escalating costs as a result of using certain types of plastics in the near future. This is something to be consider. As mentioned in the video, let’s all try to be better people and ensure we’re not disposing of materials improperly. Additionally, when you’re out and about and see litter, pick it up and dispose of it properly and recycle when applicable.

PS: a better environmental way to distribute soaps would be go back to Old school hard/firm soap pucks in cardboard boxes and paper-wrap. Then have reusable containers for keeping the soaps in, similar to what Stirling is doing with their 4.5oz refill pucks.

It would but sadly those things deteriorate over time or get beat up as well. In terms of presentation, they don't hold up well but it's certainly an option.

Great points made here, especially on the need to use excess packaging to protect the tin, which is backwards logic. The other backwards logic in commerce is any product not manufactured in the U.S. uses a little thing called Diesel Fuel that pollutes the ocean. Buy USA = less pollution.

I'm not fussed whether soap comes in tins or plastic, although I agree presentation wise most tins are not good. However, some tins are better designed than others for example the Nivea Mens Creme tins don't seem to dint easily. It's a valid argument, but I feel some folks might limit themselves from trying some really quality artisan offerings simply because of the packaging. WSP and Lather Jack both come to mind. I've flicked the WSP tins and they didn't dent like that. I wonder if they use a denser metal? Guess it doesn't really matter.

Fortunately there are no shortage of products. You won't really miss anything by not using a few. To be honest, there's no way to use them all regularly with amount of choice we have. Ironically, WSP was the company that put me on this path. I had purchased 4 soaps and 3 of them were banged up:) I always say I don't want scratch and dent product at retail prices:) Some folks don't care about this and this is entirely ok as well. totaly agree that tin are not adecuate for shaving soaps , the best one is the container of martin de candre , made of glass, the green plastic ones of stirling are very strong ,but it should be nicer to have them transparent , such as the can of barrister and mann " dickens ", nice very high quality transparent plastic , but should not have label on the back , so we can see if the soaps is not getting humid this to avoid contamination, tabac and Mitchells woolfat have ceramic containers , also very good and clean, the metallic container of " le père lucien " is very well made , but not easy to open , so in my humble opinion glass or transparent high quality plastic are the best materials for containers, regards robert

As mentioned in some other comments, I like refill pucks when possible. However, I’ll buy a soap or cream that I like and it doesn’t matter to me what container it comes in, but you definitely made some good points. Here is my question, would it be possible to send an empty container back to an artisan and just let them refill it?? Say from companies that don’t offer stand alone pucks (PAA, Barrister and Mann, etc)?? I’m sure I’m missing something here, but I guess I’m just thinking out loud on KZbin, lol. There would be the cost of shipping, but any product you buy has to be shipped anyways. I guess the process of sterilizing the used container so the manufacturer wouldn’t containment their supply would have to be addressed. Just curious I guess.
@IAMCDB3 жыл бұрын
If I finish a tub and want the scent again, I'll buy the refill puck for sure. I don't think many (if any) artisans offer to refill. There's a lot of time and cost implications there I imagine. Refill puck would probably be the easiest way to go:)

Like I said before, the tins we have today are not our fathers tins. Our fathers tins you could drive a nail with and not ding the tin. My grandfather had several on his work bench full of nuts, bolts, nails, screws and misc stuff. But in todays world we make things thinner to keep cost down and the consumer pays the price with a less durable product. I agree tins for shave soap are a no, plastic is much better, glass/ceramic even better yet. In all honesty, even tho we make some neat things today, I prefer the way things were made 80, 90, 100 years ago. When you bought something it was a forever item not a use it until it breaks then throw it away and get a new one.

BUY A SOAP PACKAGED IN NEITHER! This is the choice not mentioned. If you want a firm or hard soap (or like a "puck"), some of them come just wrapped in a plastic sheet; not in plastic tub, and not in tin/metal tub. That is, make the choice when it is one of the possible ones for the desired product.
@IAMCDB3 жыл бұрын
Good point, but then you need some sort of mechanism to protect it yourself. Again, as someone who showcases products, that wouldn't be the greatest of options. That said, many companies sell refill pucks and that's always a nice option.

Well metals can be recycled almost indefinitely, whereas plastics are pretty much one and done, no matter what they say. Anyway, why not go back to glass? I just received an order from PAA and the after shave is in glass, but the soap in plastic. It could be a glass jar with a metal lid to eliminate all the plastic. At least with glass the product can really last, like all of the vintage colognes on eBay. And to really cut down use the unscented soap and scent oils from Hendrix Classics & Co. I ordered a sample pack from them that has three scented soaps, one unscented and three oils for only $7.00 including the shipping. I don't believe you mentioned that in your review.
@IAMCDB3 жыл бұрын
Good points. I just touched on it briefly, as the argument is often very one sided, as if there's no polluting as a result of using metals. That said, I have no issue with folks who want to use tin or whatever. As the buyer I can always choose the products that are best for me. I hope you enjoy the Hendricks Products. If my shave soap just rocked up in a box, in a plastic bag, I'd be unimpressed with the company and not purchase from them again. What ever you ship needs to be secure in the packaging and padded with something. As for tubs vs tins, I have no preference, but it would be cool if some artisans allowed you to return the tubs for reuse and offered a minor discount to incentivise recycling, much like the old glass milk bottles.
