Just sharing my story about how I’ve been living and coping with Hyperemesis Gravidarum in an effort to shed some light on the rare illness and to help validate the struggle for someone out there who may be going through the same thing. This video is in no way intended to compare my experience with anyone else’s, nor take anything away from those who have experienced “morning sickness” in a more mild form. I have nothing whatsoever to gain from that. I only mention milder symptoms to offer some perspective only, not to compare or lessen the experiences of others. This video is about empowering women with HG with some advice and resources to make it through their struggles while telling my unique story for those who were curious. That's all. Feel free to share YOUR pregnancy story in the comments below!

I had HG during my 2nd pregnancy and I thought I was going to die. My family didn't understand. I had it my 1st and 2nd trimester. I couldn't really eat until I was like 30 weeks. My son is 13 months old now and I thank God he is healthy.

Nathalie Kay I’m going through this now. I was diagnosed with HG at 5 weeks. I’m 24 weeks now and have been hospitalized 8 times, each 6-8 day stays. I have been so depressed from this. Lost 47lbs, can’t work, and can’t even be home with my beautiful 3 yr old daughter. The doctor just offered an alternative for me with this zofran pump I started yesterday. It’s given some relief. But HG is horrible. This is my third pregnancy but first time ever experiencing something like this. This entire experience is making me want to tie my tubes after my son gets here. I can’t bare another pregnancy like this one 😢

I'm 14 weeks pregnant and dealing with HG. What as helped me is a medication called Ondansetron 4mg that my Droctor recommended to take after 12 weeks of pregnancy, eating cold foods ,protein bar to keep me full longer and popsicles . I hope this helps someone going through this horrible and devastating disease during pregnancy.

I wouldn't wish HG on my worst enemy! I suffered HG (severe) lost 40 lbs in 8 weeks. no doctor helped me what soever. They kept telling me to take crackers or ginger -.-. Unfortunately we lost our baby at 17 weeks in march due to dehydration and a lack of vitamins for the baby. We recently found out im 5 weeks and I'm so scared of dealing with this again but this time I'm going to be persistent and I'm not taking no for an answer. Thank you for sharing your story.

Maricruz Amezcua Its a very scary thing to go through and if you feel like your dehydrated , demand for a doctor to give you IV fluids or a banana bag. Zofran helped me alot to not throw up my first pregnancy but it didn't help for my second. unfortunately we miscarried our 2nd baby as well.

I had HG all four of my pregnancies and the whole 9-months girl. My third was the worse. Home IV, weekly nurse home checks, a Zofran pump that I carried in a little bag w a catheter leading down to a little syringe in my belly 😱 losing weight and not gaining. If was nauseas if I didn't have anything in my belly and when I finally ate, would immediately vomit and feel so much better for maybe an hour. Even after eating out at a restaurant I'd g puke behind the truck smh. Thank you so much for sharing. A lot of women have no clue what the other side of pregnancy is like for those of us with HG. Stay strong girl!

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I've been through three HG pregnancies. My first was a stillbirth at 24 weeks. I had moderate HG with my oldest daughter. My most recent pregnancy was an absolute nightmare. It began before I even missed a period. The first week or so of the illness was just purely unrelenting nausea, but after a couple weeks it progressed to vomiting every 20-30 minutes all day every day. Not to mention uncontrollably losing my bladder on myself every time I had to throw up. I couldn't even call to quit my job. I just stopped going. I literally did not have the strength to call them. All I could do it lie in bed and occasionally make it to the toilet to throw up. I literally had dreams of waterfalls and swimming and anything to do with water. I felt like I was dying. I lost a little over 30 lbs. I was administered an IV for hydration at around 8 weeks. My OB was very dismissive about it and thought I was overreacting. Medical marijuana kept me alive for a couple of months. At 28 weeks, my husband rushed me to the emergency room where they immediately took me into triage and did an EKG. I could not breathe or even speak because I was so short of breath. My heartbeat was 217 BPM on the EKG. I went into atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response. My heart was failing. I would have died if we'd waited much longer to go to the ER. They tried to give me an IV for fluids, but my veins were collapsed and it took several painful attempts. Once they got the IV in, they gave me fluids and eventually took blood to test and make sure there was no permanent damage to my heart. I also was prescribed Zofran at 8 weeks, it literally did nothing. I decided to try to start taking Zofran again after nearly dying, and it worked long enough for me to drink some water and eat a small meal, but in turn made me extremely constipated which resulted in thrombosed hemorrhoids at 32 weeks (freaking gross and so extremely painful that you can not walk, sit, lie down, or do anything without excruciating pain.) The physical affects are nothing compared to the mental affects. Trying to take care of your three year old with HG is so incredibly depressing. To have your child crying with you, asking why you can't play, why you have to be so sick, begging you to make them something to eat but you cant stand the sight or smell of food, feeling like a complete failure of a parent. I had decided on abortion, but my husband was against it, and my family probably would have disowned me. HG was the darkest time in my life. Depression, constant unrelenting vomiting, exhaustion, so much crying. My youngest daughter was my last pregnancy. My husband does not think I will survive another, and honestly I don't know if I would. I can't even put in words how debilitating HG is. How isolating. How depressing. How physically draining. It literally feels like death. Hyperemesis Gravidarum is a very dark place and it is hard to come out of it. My youngest, Juliette, is six months old now. She was born at six pounds eight oz. and 20.5" long. She is amazingly smart, hitting milestones ahead of time, and she is completely healthy. We have an incredible bond, and she was worth every second.

HG almost killed me. I was hospitalized 5 out of 9 months of my pregnancy. I didn't eat or drink anything for 4 months of it. I was being fed through tubes and given nutrients through an IV. I had a heart catheter with pain meds and a phenergan drip going straight to my heart. I was so weak, I couldn't walk anymore and I could barely breathe. I ended up in a wheel chair because I couldn't take 5 steps without being out of breath and dizzy. I lost a total of 70 lbs. Doctors said if I wasn't over weight, I would probably be dead.. HG is no joke and I wouldn't wish it on my worse enemy! But on a positive note, my baby was born healthy and is still thriving. 💝

WOW.....This video made me a little emotional because this was literally my life 10 yrs ago even down to the miscarriage false alarm, watching food network all day wishing I could eat something/anything and not being able to swallow my saliva. At the time their wasn't a diagnosis. People just saw it as a difficult pregnancy. My normal weight is about 134lbs and I went down to 101. I thank God for my parents and my sister who were the best support ever. My daughter is 9 yrs old now and though it was very difficult I was worth it. Thank you for your transparency shedding light on this illness.

OMG. I just want to take the time out and tell you THANKS for this video. I went through this with my pregnancy and my DR. always brushed it off like it was nothing. I was so hurt and stressed out. Every time I complained he prescribed me Zofran, which DID not work. Seems like everyone didn't care and they felt as if I was overreacting and that it was something I just had to deal with. This sickness is the Worst anyone can experience!. Extreme hunger plus nausea 24/7. Had to quit my job and all. All they did was give me IV's for fluid and sent me home each time. By the time I was 7 months I developed preclampsia and had my baby boy weighting 2 pounds and 16 ounces. I just really wish Doctors took this more serious, because lots of women decide they dont want to continue their pregnancies bc of this. Thank you so much!

MonteXO this was my exact same experience!!!!! I had this with both my children who are 14 years apart! I went through four different medicines before finding something that helped me feel normal and get back to living. I felt so bad because I know many women who wish to experience motherhood, but after these two experiences, I don't think I ever want to be pregnant again!!!!! I did find a support group online which was actually started by a nurse who was disappointed with the healthcare systems response and treatment towards people like us after she went through the same thing. They have a list of recommended physicians who are experienced with this rare and terrible condition.

Same happen to me with my daughter (she was perfectly fine while I suffered). It was so frustrating when people would try to tell me the same and "just drink some ginger ale" or "keep saltines by your beside". I was like NO! After 20 pounds and crying in my midwife's office (she wanted to wait until after the first trimester), and an ER visit too, I was given Zofran. Mine didn't work at first, but they had to adjust my dosage. So happy you found relief and you look amazing!

I grew to hate Saltines. They would make my mouth dry and left too much of a sweet taste in my mouth. Spicy foods helped. I had spicy pickles, olives, and lots of mashed potatoes (no gravy). One key for me was not to eat anything that was too sweet. I needed tangy, spicy, or sweet and sour. I liked the strawberry Italian ice by Luigis?? Couldn't handle the lemon one.

Diclegis was BOMB!! I had to take it all throughout the day but it was way better than Zofran! I totally feel your pain...I'm so sorry you're going through it, I threw up violently until 30 weeks, I lost 12 lbs and only ended up gaining another ten after I gained it back. It's so crazy how the baby is just fine through it all. I also had something called symphysis pubis dysfunction and was in a wheelchair for the months because I couldn't walk due to the pain, what we go through as women to bring these babies in the world is amazing. I just want to encourage everyone who may think they have it to call your ob and go to the hospital. The moment you can't keep down liquid PLEASEE go to the hospital; don't wait until you're in the vicious cycle of dehydration, vomiting, and starving...it only gets worse! Ive had this my 1st and didn't realize...just thought it was morning sickness and I was a whimp. Now I'm on my 2nd and absolutely had to go to the hospital because of severe dehydration, low blood sugar, keynotes in my urine, and my livers/kidneys spilling into my urine too. It's no joke! Losing weight, the cycle of vomiting, starving, and not being able to sleep or find comfort is not something we have to suffer through.

I had hyperemesis with all my pregnancies! I gained a total of 15 pounds in each of my pregnancies. It was emotionally physically debilitating. But I did give birth to two healthy babies each weighing 7 pounds. I have so much compassion to anyone who went through what I did. My pregnancy did not feel like nine months rather than an eternity, Time never went slower. I had multiple hospitalizations and on my third pregnancy I was even on home health care, I lost 19 pounds in less than one month, and had no extra weight to lose, I miscarried after 12 weeks and decided that I had put my body through too much and we decided to not have anymore children after that. but if anyone is going through this, it's nice to have someone to talk to who's been through it, it will feel worth it once you have your baby in your arms. You may swear you'll never do it again, but after time you do tend to forget some of your agony of pregnancy. God bless you, your family and your new baby 😘

OMG a dear friend of mine had HG during her pregnancy two years ago. We had no clue what was going on with her. The nausea was so bad. She had relocated her to Texas from our home Chicago. Needless to say she stayed in the hospital so often she ended up losing her job. Her mom finally took her back to Chicago and that's when we learned of her diagnosis. None of us had ever heard of HG before. Her daughter is now 2 years old. Keep spreading the word about this devastating illness! Praying for continued health during the remainder of your pregnancy and CHEERS to a happy healthy beautiful baby girl!

Then, I was young, early 20s and didn't want to even think about pregnancies, so couldn't relate, let alone the experience of not keeping food down and frequent visits to the hospital for IV. Thank you for sharing this. It will help so many women sharing your experience now and to come. Continued improved health, and I pray that the remainder of your pregnancy continues to improve to an easy labour and delivery of your daughter. Many blessings and love.

@msvaughn I watched this when you first came out with it and now I'm back. I'm in my second pregnancy and dealing with severe nausea that lasts all day and all night. My first pregnancy I was also very sick through the whole thing but Zofran helped with the first. I'm glad you shed light on this because I plan on talking about it with my doctor at my next appointment. Your little girl is so precious and I'm glad it all worked out in the end!

I Had HG 12 years ago when there wasn't much info available about it! Your story was very simular to mines. I was hospitalized for 4 days, lost 10 lbs, couldn't talk to or see the ppl closest to me bcuz of their smell or simply the sound of their voices. Zofran worked for me but I had to take it 5 mins before I ate. If you never had HG, than u could never understand how difficult, scary and humbling this condition is! I only have one child bcuz I could never imagine going through it agian! I bow my head and praise every woman who had to experience this condition and made it through 9 month!! Oh and I worked throughout my entire pregnancy up until 2 days before I had my son....still dnt knw how I was capable of tht!!!

I went through the same thing...I felt like I was dying. My relief came with the use of suppositories (Phenergen) and to calm my anxiety and depression I was prescribed Zoloft. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. It gets better but Jesus! I told myself that I'm birthing a Queen and that requires a sacrifice like no other!

It is nothing compared to the average morning sickness...I've been out of work/life for 7 months. I thank God it is calming down but you still have to be extremely careful on what you do and eat. We need awareness!!! It is mentally exhausting and seriously something we should become educated about!

Thank you sooo much for making this video. I glanced at it when you posted it years ago after having my second child. I’m pregnant now with my third child and I’m experiencing HG for the first time and it is awful. I went from full time wife, mom and nurse to an HG stay at home mom and homeschooling two boys because of Covid. I’m in my second trimester and I’m disappointed that I still don’t feel well. But videos like yours gives me hope that I’m not alone and there are women out there who understand what I’m going through.

Thank you for sharing. The struggle is so real. I suffered with the very same ailment when I was pregnant with my daughter in 2013. I began experiencing severe HG symptoms in my 8th week, as well, and had to take a leave from work and grad school and underwent home IV therapy for about 12 weeks until I began feeling well enough to return to my life. I had a permanent pic line and was on bed rest for my entire first trimester and some of my second. I'd lost a lot of weight. Zofran was a bust for me, as well. And thank God I gave up on it after day 2 because it is NOT safe for pregnant women. I was fairly nauseous throughout my entire pregnancy and did not feel complete relief until I, literally, pushed my daughter out. I ate EVERYTHING in sight following delivery. LOL I'm glad to know you're well now. Wishing you a great remainder of your pregnancy.

So glad to hear that you are doing better and spotlighting a serious medical condition. I suffered from HG during both my pregnancies in 1997 & 2001. My second pregnancy was even worse because I had a three year old to take care of as well. There wasn't any medications for it back then and my HG lasted till I delivered both times. I still suffer from issues due to the severe vomiting to this day. I wanted more kids but I stopped at two. It was so hard mentally and physically and my husband was not much help. Thank you for being so candid. Wishing you continued success with treatment.

I'm sorry for your loss. Find a good (caring & knowledgeable) OB-GYN as there are a lot of options out there for this illness now. Doctors just disagree on what is safe and what isn't. Some doctors also don't know as much as they should. I was so fortunate to have an OB who valued my pregnancy and listened to my concerns. It was a HUGE difference from the female OB I had with my 1st pregnancy. I hope you are able to realize your dreams. My kids are 18 years apart so clearly I was beyond scared with the 2nd but I wouldn't change anything!!

I feel you. I had the same experience. I could't carry the pregnancy to term either because I was sooo sick! I'm allergic to zofran and nothing else worked with my first pregnancy. I'm pregnant again by accident and praying the ;Lord sees me through this time. But try Diclegis! it does help. I just found out about that med during this pregnancy and it works during the day but at night it wears off. but just try to sleep early.

Thank you for sharing. As a mother of three , I never even heard of HG. I remember talking to a Russian women-in the mall- who had all the symptoms you have, but she wasn't able to articulate that she had HG, but she did express she had to be hospitalized and given fluids because she passed out. She was able to manage it through medication and when I spoke to her last she was 9 months pregnant and doing well. Congrats on your lending and I wish you all the best.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I have been suffering for HG since week 6, spend a night on a drip at week 7, now week 12 and it's lessened but constant feeling of nausea and exhausted. Came off the meds prescribed as they were making me crazy - suicidal ideations at night! HG is boring, exhausting and isolating. Had to abandon being vegetarian, like you say, you have to eat whatever you fancy. My mum has staged an intervention to help me clean my home. I have a 2 and a half year old son who is missing having me at my best. I can't wait for this to stop!! Thank you again for sharing your research and experience and hope you are enjoying your daughter now HG is a memory.

I am crying listening to you! I thought I was the only person who went through this. My kids are 13 & 16 years old now. At the beginning of the pregnancies I too lost weight but eventually gained 25-30 lbs total for both. Nothing I ate stayed down. Having to spit all the time was a pain when I worked. I had heartburn too. I didn't know I was dehydrated! Thanks so much for sharing your story. You have given a name to something that was nameless to me. No one I knew had gone through this at that time and you're true first person I know that has had the same or similar experience. I wish you all the best! 💜

When u said u almost fainted my mouth dropped! Outside of me being happily married and I actually DID begin passing out.. Our pregnancy story is verBETUM! the diagnosis of the illness is THE SAME! That's why I said enjoy eating and being pregnant because I wasn't able to until 7 MONTHS! Nexium .. Now a killer med fa real fa real .. the lawyers have commercials out about that medication now and everything .. I was pregnant while takin it 10 years ago for a couple months but I'm fine my daughter is fine she is smart as a whip her birthday is today ☺️ I didn't grow a wicked ass sense of smell .. But yea they gave me a strong acid blocker and that helped me .. And the mental is REAL! I told the doctor if this continues I don't want it they said u too far along for an abortion and I busted out into tears .. I cried like a baby lol .. Again .. I went til 7 months! Lost 40 POUNDS!!

My arms were so bruised from the countless times I was poked in the hospital .. I was in and out .. They forced me to wait til After 3 months .. Said I would get better .. Once I didnt they checked for everything other than HG .. My daughter lived off my fat and was actually BIGGER than she should have been at x amount of weeks .. We tell her about the pregnancy story all the time .. It's in her baby book .. Pics and everything.. My vitals were so screwed the doctors said I was a miracle and showed all the residents me saying they didnt even know why I was alive with vitals like I had .. Passed my chart around for the med students to learn from ..
