this is so amazing. I totally relate. I am graduating high school in a week (finally!) and have experienced a similar situation with my counselor. in the fall, I told her I would be applying to UCLA and Emory, and she laughed. a few months later, I was accepted to both with very generous scholarships and grants.

Laura, this has helped so much. My parents came to the U.S. as refugees when I was a wee baby and I am the first in my family to get an education here in the states. My dad, aunt and grandma all died within 2 years of each other. You're right, you learn to appreciate your time here, because you're constantly reminded of how easy life can be taken away, I was close to all of them, both my aunt and grandma fought everyday so hard with cancer, and seeing their fight inspired me. My dad died from a heart attack, so it was very sudden and quick. It sucks, but taking care of my grandma and aunt when they were sick made me want to become a doctor. I have spent so much time in the hospital with them that I just started liking it, and the environment and all that nurses and doctors and others do. I'm happy for you for sticking it through though and getting through it all. Take care

I'm a couple months late watching this video, but it could not have been more perfect timing. I'm a junior in undergrad right now pursing the pre-med path. Thank you so much, and I look forward to watching your future videos!

I can't believe there are people who work at schools who will tell students they will never amount to anything. That's horrifying, they shouldn't even have jobs at schools where you are supposed to uplift and encourage these kids to want to make it

You're such an inspiration! Your story resonates so much with me; my upbringing was a lot similar to yours in regards to witnessing a lot of illnesses in my family due to poor diet, lifestyle choices, etc. I also flunked my freshman year of HS and got serious about school afterwards, which affected the colleges I was able to get into. My major isn't Pre-Med; I'm actually pursuing Political Science with plans to go to law school after graduation, but I still find your blog and videos so interesting and informative. It's great to have a fellow Latina to look up to, thanks for providing such an awesome platform for women! :)

Literally the moment you said "Take that sting and let it light up your ass" 😭 I know I was doing something right. I wasn't the brightest in High School but I eventually got it together and we have such a similar story with the college counselor and etc. but I had a challenging first semester of college last semester. I did so terrible that I felt like all my hard work went to waste. But I've learned to take it as motivation and build myself up and make sure that I become a Doctor. Thank you so much for letting me know that there's someone out there who was in the same shoes as I am and made it through! It means so much to me.

I flunked all my first semester courses freshmen year and I retook them and passed. I went to my advisor and he told me because of how my transcript looks that i shouldnt even consider doing the pre med program during my undergrad because no medical school would take me considering how my transcript looks. So as of now im discouraged and im just considering a different program. I dont know if i should still continue to try pre med or just change. Im a sophomore now and dont know if its too late to even try and bounce back.
