How did you all those extracurricular activities and yet your grade is still high and then you are the same bubbly personality when I first saw your vid here in KZbin. Gosh what a role model, keep inspiring other people like me:)

Hi Andrea, I just wanted to write a little thank you for making all these amazing videos. I am only a sophomore in high school but know I want to pursue a career in the medical field. These videos have helped not only in understanding what I need to do but have also motivated me. I cannot tell you how many times I have had bad days where I thought to myself that I'm not good enough or I can't do it and wanted to just give up but I always come back to your videos and they make me feel 100% better and motivated to go out there and kick some butt. I really cannot thank you enough for motivating but making me confident as I go through this "scary" medical path. You might not even see this but thank you ❤️

Since you are so good at funding and using money wisely, you should work on cutting doctors' pay for their routine work. The latest Artificial intelligent (AI) physician almost got a perfect score on the medical licensing examination which leads the robot to getting a license to practice medicine. Robot physicians cost $100.00 a year in electricity to run and is almost perfect in diagnosing and prescribing. A human physician costs more than a quarter of a million dollars in salary and is NOT nearly as accurate as AI.

I am in 7th grade and I am very passionate about the field of medicine and specifically surgery. I know I am early, and I know that I am young but I really like it. I know how to do basic sutures and I like studying anatomy. I guiltily know that Grey's Anatomy was a significant contribution towards my interest. This was really helpful and I am really looking forward to high school when people will understand that the standard middle school math and science classes are just too easy. So excited to continue my path towards becoming a trauma, ortho, general, or pediatric surgeon.

Hey Andrea. Can you please talk about the downfalls of medicine we hear about all the time (how it's a mistake because the salary is too low, it's stressful, not worth it...etc)? I have shadowed some doctors who say that they wish they did something else because they're just so miserable, and there are surveys out there that depict how unsatisfied doctors are with their jobs nowadays. Do you see those negative aspects during residency? Is your career what you hoped it would be?

13 people in your graduating class wow thats crazy! I live in Indiana too and I'm currently a sophomore in high school. I do an online public school. There are tons of AP classes but deciding which ones to take and how many to take is super stressful! I thought to be successful in medicine you should take as many as you can, I'm happy to hear from someone so successful that they didn't take too many of them. :) Love your videos and all your advice and different career videos. They are seriously so amazing. Also, I think community service is great as well. I currently help a lot at my church and also feed the homeless. I did mission work last summer in Alaska as well. I def want to add more community service, especially in a hospital. I think it is awesome that you got your pilots license! That is something that sounds very fun and interesting to learn! I know you've made some videos on time management but my issue is that I find I end up studying the wrong things for too long or that I run out of time to cover all of the important materials that are on tests and I guess I haven't really developed good test taking skills. I don't know if any of that makes sense but basically I was wondering if you could explain what you do to feel prepared for a test or exam in order to make sure you cover all that needs to be reviewed. Hi Andrea! I'm a premed student in college right now and I love love looooove your videos! There's so many questions haha so I hope you can answer mine! My question is, how do you feel about the lack of primary care physicians nowadays? I'm asking because I was originally very interested in primary care: pediatrics or family medicine. However, I've read A LOT of articles about how primary care is the worst field, and it's not worth it to go to medical school and end up in primary care. Therefore, I am considering dental school now. I've shadowed a little bit, and I plan to continue to shadow more doctors soon. Thank you for your help!

@MintChocChip100
@MintChocChip100 9 жыл бұрын
+Dani Glez I'm also a college student and in the same boat. Because the MCATs have changed with more added content such as pyschology, sociology, and more physics and more biochem aspects, there needs to be more time to take the all those courses to prepare for the MCATs. Dr. Tooley had taken her MCATs at the end of her sophomore year. That is certainly commendable for her but it's incredibly difficult to do that now with all the added subjects. Pre-med advisors are advising students to take the MCATs after the fourth year, which automatically creates a gap year during the admissions process.
@MintChocChip100
@MintChocChip100 9 жыл бұрын
+MintChocChip100 But it also allows more time during undergrad to take all the required courses and study.
@MintChocChip100
@MintChocChip100 9 жыл бұрын
+MintChocChip100 I've personally never thought about it before because I don't want to take a gap year. But I think it would be a nice break before school starts again, just to avoid burn-out. My own personal goal is to try to take all the courses by my junior year, and if that proves too difficult, then I would plan on taking it at the end of my fourth year.
@DaniGlez96
@DaniGlez96 9 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely there are so many more courses that are not necessarily required for the MCAT but recommended and im currently finishing my third year and have currently taken all of those, soc, psyc, all the sciences, biochem, etc. I also always knew I would finish my microbiology bachelor's degree before going to med school so I think to just make my life easier im going to take two lab courses over the summer because they are 7 hours long each and will take a whole lot of load off from my 4th year if I take them now,so the time I had set aside for the MCAT this summer is not going to happen so it looks like after 4th year I'll be doing that... sucks in a way to have that gap year then but might honestly need it tbh. Best of luck to you as well!!!!

WOW!!! You are my role model. I am a junior in high school and I am kind of freaking out because I feel like I haven't done as much. I am having a lot of trouble with managing my time with homework and SAT tutors & prep. How did you manage all of the activities you did throughout high school? Also, I have been researching so many hospitals to volunteer at, but I can't find one that will provide me with raw experience in the medical field. Would you have any suggestions? I apologize for so many questions!
@MintChocChip100
@MintChocChip100 9 жыл бұрын
+Abigail Panarello She is definitely my role model too! Ive been following her channel since I was in high school! (Im only a first year in college!) But its okay that you havent done that much! But as a high schooler right now, your main focus should be to get into undergrad college. Dr. Tooley did a video on time management and organizational tips (it was actually the first video that I had watched too) so you should def search for that and check it out. But please keep your grades up. You just have to work your butt off and keep school as your number one priority. With the volunteering at the hospitals, youre not going to find one that allows high schoolers a raw experience in the medical field. Pardon my frankness, but you dont have any medical licensing so I dont think any hospitals would allow a high school with no medical experience straight into the medical field just to volunteer. If you do want to volunteer, just volunteer at any hospital so you could understand how a hospital even works. I volunteered at a hospital for two years in high school and I mainly was an information desk volunteer. But I also learned so much terminology and the functions and pace of a hospital. But if you want to have experience observing the medical field, the only option right now is to shadow doctors! But it wouldn't be volunteering.

I am a student at UNC Chapel Hill, and I am currently doing a biomedical engineering degree. I really think this track is interesting, but not for me. Part of the reason why I wanted to do this track was because I really want to stand out apply to medical school. However, more that I think about it I really want to major in Spanish, minor in Korean and Japanese/Chemistry. I really have a strong affinity towards languages and can already speak other languages like Hindi and Urdu fluently. I really still feel like I want to continue with my dream of becoming a doctor, however, should I major in language? I am so torn, please advise me because I want to follow people's advises.

Dr. Tooley, I have a question for you. Were there medical students in your class who were considering starting family during or after medical school before residency? I was curious as more non traditional medicine students enter the program at a later age, and I am currently in the process of registering for the prereq courses to get into med school. I might be 30 by then. If you have any information about this, it would be very helpful!!

+tokee1234567 Lots of people have children in medical school and residency! My co-resident just had her first baby 6 weeks ago and I know several residents who had kids in medical school and more in residency!

Hello Dr. Tooley. Did your co-resident take some time off after her pregnancy? How accommodating is Med School in letting students have a few weeks off for their labor and getting adjusted before coming back to school? If a student has a baby after their 4th year, are they allowed to maybe have a year off before their residency begins without giving up their residency spot? Thank you for your response Dr. Tooley!

I feel like I've done nothing now. Did nothing at all in highschool and now I'm in a small college where there's only like three clubs I can join which I'm already in. Also it's hard for a freshman to get any type of internships idk what to do

I've only joined one club so far and one EC activity, I didn't do anything in high school except yearbook club, I have no medical experience whatsoever, no shadowing, nothing.

+Mustlehard Use that to your advantage to take a leadership role. Find a club that you are interested in and think could make a difference and set about starting a chapter in your school. It will show that you take initiative, you care about the community, make you unique in your application, and also be very rewarding to you personally!

Hi Andrea, I was wondering if you could possibly make a video about doctors with disabilities. I am currently studying midwifery in the UK and I work alongside obstetricians on my clinical placements. Studying medicine and going on to become an obstetrician is a bit of a pipe dream for me - it's something I am definitely interested in but I don't yet know if medicine is right for me, or if I am right for medicine. I also have epilepsy. So far this hasn't affected my midwifery training too much, apart from not being able to work night shifts for a short period of time, and I have been reassured that even with my epilepsy I can still become a competent midwife. It made me wonder - is this the same for doctors? My epilepsy is well controlled with medication, however, I do still have seizures every few months. Would this eliminate my chances of becoming an obstetrician, as it would present dangers while performing Caesarean sections and operative deliveries? Thanks, Rachel.

hey Andrea, I was wondering on how I could shadow doctors when you live abroad? I live in Switzerland right now and they want you to be able to speak German... I kind of shadow the school nurse but I'm not sure if that is enough for my CV:\

Hi Andrea! I think your videos are helpful to a lot of people, but it kind of seems like your journey is way different than most medical students, as it is not possible to get accepted to medical school before your senior year of undergrad. Do you have any tips for admission essays? I'm applying to medical school now after taking the MCAT twice (I did 9 points better this time!). Also, what medical school did you go to? I'm guessing it was Ivy League.

+Nejat Alkadir I have one at home that I bought from Walmart (I think- it was years ago) but really when I talk about using the whiteboard to study, I use a whiteboard as big as possible, which means going to school and using the boards in classrooms.

How were you prepared for the MCAT straight after your second year? With a double major how did you get ahead in the material I've heard is found in the MCAT? I feel perpetually behind and would have liked to take it this summer (the end of my sophomore year) but I haven't taken biochemistry yet. How were you so ahead? And how did you stay so ahead of the curve?
@AndreaTooleyMD
@AndreaTooleyMD 8 жыл бұрын
When I took the MCAT, biochem wasn't required. I took chemistry and biology freshman year, took organic over the summer between freshman and sophomore year, and then took physics, cell and molecular bio, and inorganic chemistry sophomore year. I think I took genetics somewhere in there too LOL! I studied for the MCAT over the summer after sophomore year and took it in August before junior year. I did take biochem junior year, but it wasn't on the MCAT when I took it back in 2008 (I'm so old!!)

Hello ma'am, I hope you could answer some of questions on Med school. I have just arrived here in the US from Cambodia. To be a doctor in Cambodia, you just have to apply in after high school into an 8 years program university. I have finished 4 of it. ( we have no degree nor MCAT test.) I would like to ask you if there are some cases like me. And I am told I have to go to a four year university first and some have told me to study two years of community college before applying for university and then Med school. I would like some of your advices. And also, I would like to know if I were to be accepted in a four year university, will the name of my undergraduate school matter to med school? Best wishes to you, PS: should I get a GED first? And since I'm under 21, should I take the SAT?
