So when you don't have time, you go to Asian cuisine, 15 minutes and you've eaten and you're not late for the train.

The "sauce on the side" problem is cultural. French and Italian chefs (and restaurants they work at by extension) are extremely proud of their craft,. and by bringing changes like this you're messing with their recipe and it's annoying and borderline insulting. Interesting your experience. Some people i know who are American, have experienced some sort of rude treatment by countries like France or Italy. Seems like there is some kind of idea about Americans tourist being not respectful, at least to what they told me. And that’s why they have had that rude treatment towards them. Italy it’s quite beautiful on it’s architecture, what I found really interesting is how different the north compare to the south is. And I as far as I barely know there is also like a culturally historical difference between those two Italian regions Edit: I deleted by accident my other comment because I’m so distracted sometimes 🤦🏻♂️, about how you may “trigger” Italians because of your take on their coffee because is something they are proud about than places like Starbucks.

I've been to Italy a few times, and I would love to go back once more. The art, architecture, history, and even the nature is gorgeous. Venice is a neat little city, but I could accomplish everything there in only a few days. Rome is very crowded in the summer, obviously, but the historical layout is still nice. The fields between Rome, Venice, and Tuscany are beautiful. Florence is also a neat area with so many fun museums and cathedrals. Naples was exciting both times I visited. Once, I ate a slice of pizza near the Leaning Tower, like most amateur American tourists used to do back in the day. Genoa has a fantastic aquarium and several nice shops and stuff, and it is also a great place for cruise ships to appear. When I went on one out of Genoa last year, I met these beautiful sisters my age that were incredibly nice, whereas in New Hampshire, the women are either ignorant or mean and the men are a hit or miss. Italy is a friendlier lot than the Northeastern US, that's for sure, and I was warned in advance that they're nicer than the folks in Paris. I have legitimately contemplated going to Siena for my master's degree since I plan to return to Italy next fall if I can raise the money, and that would have given me a good excuse to do academic work beyond the woke state of New Hampshire. (But I have recently decided to do Germany for masters college instead because, even though tuition in Italy is not that much, German universities are literally free besides housing.) My only bad experience in Italy was last time, where I almost died from overheating in Venice because our room had no AC. But besides that, while I will never go back in the summertime, I would absolutely visit Italy again in the fall, the winter, or even the spring. I'm happy to hear that you had a great time in Italy, and I hope you consider returning again soon. But next time, I would try going to Venice and Padua because, like I said before with Venice, that is a gorgeous city where you can do so much in a short time. Will you travel to Europe again soon, and if so, will you check out Spain or Greece? Those countries are also very nice.

Hey Misha !!! As a (Northern) Italian, I'm glad you enjoyed your time here and appreciate your feedback. You should have come to Milan, we are the biggest city and the most cosmopolitan in Italy, as well as the fashion capital of Europe. Milan is cold and very similar to Paris, but so beautiful. I just want to add some things: I agree that customer service is pretty bad all over Europe, especially in France, in Italy we're friendlier and actually even better towards americans and we have better english knowledge and accent, but not in the big cities (Milan is exactly like Paris), we appreciate you trying to speak Italian but some people might have an attitude, I hope that waiter was just a one-off episode (the french are worse yes) because not everyone has that attitude. AC is bad for you and not that common in Italy and France, even though many places have it now. I'm VERY surprised about the coffee. I think you just got unlucky because Italy has the best coffee places. You probably went to the wrong ones. Have never heard of coffee being watery (In not saying every coffee will be good, you can find some terrible places even here)... And don't get me wrong, but I don't think the average american has a say in what coffee tastes good and what doesn't. Please. I hope you come back and I wish I could take you to the best coffee places lol. Btw, my family is originally from Tuscany and I agree with you, it's my favourite region. It's so beautiful, and yeah it does look like Bordeaux (they're both wine-making regions) and also California's Napa Valley (countryside) as well as its coast. There is actually a place in Tuscany called "La California". Greetings from Italy and grazie mille !!! Come back soon. 🇮🇹❤️

In Switzerland and Germany, I found that I had to put a little bit of water in my coffee as it was too strong for my tastes. I just resorted to drinking tea after a while. I have not tried any US establishments at all in my trips to Europe, but now I am curious if Starbucks coffee in Europe is similar to how we would expect it in the US.

Starbucks in Italy is for tourists only since Italians hate the sugary Starbucks drink. From what you say you came to Italy with the classic American “colonizer” mentality. This is particularly hated by the French. In Italy the very concept of “fast food” is hated: when you eat, you sit down, enjoy the meal, eat slowly, talk to friends or family, enjoy the moment. That's why they don't gain weight. Also, if you ask for a plate of pasta with “sauce” on the side, in Italy of course they look at you upset. It's like if you ask in America to eat American food, but with “shit on the side.” A dish is not just a collection of foods put together, but it is a cultural element. I once heard an American order pasta bolognese with pesto on the side.... In Italy you can risk killing someone with that request!

..there is a saying in Portugal, that i'm sure has equivalent in english, but i don't remember.. "The just, pays for the sinner".. of course NOT you, but americans before you, left this heritage for newcomers.. specialy black americans.. (i'm refering to some prejudice against american tourists, specialy in the common same visited places).. My advice, is go the further of common touristic places, or, why not, use yelp or something..or better, ask locals ! ..about the expresso coffee: I worked for some years as semi-truck driver thru Europe, and, i think no bias, the portuguese expresso is the best, because here is followed a simple rule: (i drink without sugar, but principle aplies), that is, the small expresso coffee, must sustain the sugar for some seconds on its "cream", before sinking before mixing.. In Spain, it is necessary to ask for strong solo expresso, or they will keep pouring coffee of the machine into cup, making it weak and watery (tourism had some influence on it, because foreigners weren't used to such condensed and strong coffee and being "ripped of for such small amount", and wanting some more).. (i would guess this is what happened to your coffees..), because when i was in Italy or France, i used to mostly stop on "truck stops", and they were ok.. In Portugal some people prefer these watered coffee, but they have to ask "pingado" where they let it run a bit more, making it more watery (even though many don't realize, that the amount of coffee is bigger, because even if weaker coffee keeps flowing, it is still more coffee to the cup).. Depends as well from where the coffee grain is imported from.. A expresso cup, should have no more than 3/4 of volume, and should come out creamy.. (and temperature of machine adjusted for season of the year, because keeping the winter temp, extracting coffee in Summer, will burn the taste of it).. But just in case, if i go to a placei don't know how it usualy is taken out of the machine, i aways ask for strong ,short and creamy.. they usualy know why i am asking it..not saving in coffee inside the machine thing where it comes out, compress it, and the right amount! ..damn..so many lines about coffee i wrote, and barely nothing on the rest..☕☕☕☕☕

The part about the French hating when you butcher their language is so true!!! My sister lives in Paris.
@briantravelman2 ай бұрын
I think that's mainly Parisians. They think anyone who doesn't speak Metropolitan dialect doesn't know proper French. I saw a video of a girl speaking to French people in Québecois. They were a little confused, but no one was rude. I butchered entire sentences in the Pyranees and didn't have any problems. I saw a French language challenge on "The Amazing Race", and they were butchering the words so bad, and the judge was so lenient, and usually the judges in other countries are so strict with language challenges. I saw an episode in Taiwan, if they pronounce the Chinese word EXACTLY, they didn't get the clue. Most French people actually aren't that anal about it, because they know they're language is difficult and there are certain sounds foreigners simply can't make.
@maten146Ай бұрын
It's not really that, it is just that in France we are very direct on negative feedback and do not sugarcoat stuff. We are used from early age to have very bad comments on our exam, at school, ... therefore, it feels completely natural and not personal at all for a French individual to be corrected or to correct. Also, and it is especially the case in Paris, people are not used to know any other language and accent than Parisian French, which means that if you try to speak them any other way (in English, in another accent, ...) they will have trouble understanding and be stressed as they are not used to it.
