I was a taxi driver 2009 to 2013 (the financial crash meant I had to stop, and now I work freelance as a customer service agent), a Proton Impian was used as a taxi by another taxi firm, so I have seen one in real life But they were rare to begin with anyway, not that many were sold in the UK, and now 16 to 20 years later, even less of these cars will be on the road or in a reasonable state of roadworthiness It's a shame, they seem to be reasonably competent vehicles, and I am always a fan of an underdog

Hi there again Jon. I am full of jealousy with your purchase. UK specs Waja are something which the home market never got. From 2000 to 2007, most of Waja sold in Malaysia has zero airbags and no ABS as well unlike your car which has twin front airbags and side airbags in the seats. Standard wheel size was 15 inch, except for the revised model in 2004 known as Enhanced Version or Waja EV which received the exact same 16" wheels as yours. We did got a limited period offer of the X trim variant though (1.6X, 1.8X) - bringing rear adjustable headrests and central armrest, 2 airbags, ABS, traction control and automatic climate control, among others. Most buyers in Malaysia did not take the option though (together with the scary Renault 1.8). Fyi, Waja was on the drawing board some time in 1997 together with the Campro power unit but the ex Prime Minister pushed for early production so in the year 2000 Proton launched the Waja with engines sourced of Mitsubishi and Renault. The Campro only made it the Waja in late 2007, and the sportier CPS in 2008 (finally we got something similar to the UK). However I believe the CPS with 125bhp Campro (a similar system licensed by Lotus to Porsche known as VarioCam) never made it to the UK. The European car market is hard to break with the domination of Ford and Vauxhalls in the UK. And especially the forever hatchback craze too.
@JonCouplandКүн бұрын
Thanks for watching and for your insights 😊👍
@RikAindow14 сағат бұрын
You make good points there regarding the car specs. Some European car makers that sell in Asia or South America also don't fit the safety features as seen on the cars destined for Europe as they build them to a cost, and to satisfy local rules. Profit before safety.
@tiadaid3 күн бұрын
It's interesting to note that, if the price of the car was 10,000 pounds in 2001 it is actually 700 pounds LESS than the corresponding base spec Waja price in Malaysia. And considering the fact that the Malaysian base spec has even less features than the UK base spec, the price difference would be way bigger. This explains the anger many Malaysians felt towards Proton. We paid more for less, and if we wanted any other car besides Proton or Perodua, we're paying so much more.

I I absolutely love it. It makes me super nostalgic for the first one of these i ever drove at the Proton dealership i worked at. It too was an 05 plate in this colour but the GLXi instead. They actually drove and handled really well and i agree the Mitsubishi engine was so much better than the Campro which seemed to lack low down torque and loved to overrev. The wheels were always a weak point - they pitted after about 6 months - and the tracking is really easily thrown out by bumps. The colour coding on the steering wheel and gearknob was quite quirky. There was actually an exterior colour - it looked black but was actually a really dark purple - available that matched it. My first Impian demo - SP05BJY - was that colour. £300 wonderfully spent. Intrigued to see how the MOT and dad inspection go

Hi Jon what a fabulous car and it shows that it was rays pride and joy how he has looked after it’s definitely a keeper in my view! I vaguely remember them brand new and we had a proton dealer near to where we live Gra Mar Motors - in later years they didn’t seem to advertise them as much as other makes I remember they did push the lotus tuned chassis It’s a shame as it’s probably a capable car and for the money much cheaper than the megane I bought new that year and probably more reliable! Hey Jon. Great video. For me, the Proton were the Dacia of their time (in the UK) BUT, where they had the advantage was the fact that as they were built in Malaysia, they could add more kit whilst keeping costs down compared to Dacia who were building in Europe were I can only assume their labour costs are higher. In terms of why they didnt take off in the UK you have to remember at the time the government were obsessed with CO2 and as such the VED was based on this which resulted in petrol engined cars being more expensive. If they had offered a diesel, it may have been more successful. Also, if im not mistaken, i believe these only got 2, maybe 3 stars in Euro NCAP whereas at the time, Renault had just got 5 stars on the same test. I always liked Proton, the old Persona / Wira which was basically a modified Mitsubishi Galant (or was it Carisma?) was a favourite of mine. The Savvy and Gen2 though, I'm not a fan of those.

Used to see quite a lot of these, I worked in the Stanley area (near Newcastle) for a few years, this is a fairly poor town and it had a Proton dealer, so you'd see loads of Protons buzzing around there about 10-15 years ago. Quite liked these - they were cheap even at 5 years old, and the owners in the area seemed to like them. I believe they were very similar mechanically to the Nedcar models (Volvo S40, Mitsubishi Carisma/Space Star) which were always solid, reliable cars even if a bit boring.

Hey Jon, how are you? We spoke in Facebook Messenger couple years back when I was about to write an article about you. At 26:05, the button with a dot icon is to disarm the immobilizer. Let's say if you unlock the car using the remote and there's some glitches with a blinking red light in the meter panel, you won't be able to turn on the engine. So, you need to slot in the key, twist the ignition on, press the dot button, it will shut off the blinking red light, and you will be able to start the engine. Hope this clarifies.

Proton Waja had nothing in common with Volvo V40, not a single part interchangeable. The 2 things Waja shared with Carisma are just the engine mounting points and suspension mounting points. Even the wheelbase is different - Waja has 2600mm while both Carisma and S40 at 2550mm (showing even the floorpan is different). And while both Carisma and S40 have fuel filler door on the left, Waja has it on the right side of the car. Even windscreens and dashboards were all different. I wonder what made you wrote that.

@@fauzanriez9472 Proton themselves literally said that the Waja's chassis is a modified adaptation of the Mitsubishi Carisma / Volvo S40 platform. From an official press release, "The Mitsubishi 1.6 4G18 shared a chassis platform with the Mitsubishi Carisma. Interestingly, the Carisma also shared a platform with the first-gen Volvo S40."
