Great video❤! In the old days in my country- Croatia, people used to clean woolen blankets and coats in the snow. They would wait until there is a thick enough layer of dry snow on the ground and then would throw blankets and coats on it. Then they lightly beat them with a stick on both sides. The snow sucks out all the dirt and smell without making the fabric wet. The fabric looks clean and fresh afterwards. Old fashioned way 😊.

I sew a lot with loose wool knits. My best advice there is increase the differential feed on the serger and use wooly nylon thread :)

I do wash wool in the delicate cycle before sewing, cold water. Then I put it in the dryer with a towel on medium heat, and take it out promptly. Then I give it a good press. It haven’t had any issues. It shrinks a bit, but then I know my final garment will not shrink beyond that. And like you, I don’t like to take things to the dry cleaners. Since I know I will be washing the final garment, I would rather test it before I sew!

An ironing board and steam is what my grandmother used. She taught me, and that's what I still do. It's very effective.

A clapper can be made from untreated hardwood. Get a nice hefty chunk that fits your hand and seems like a good size and just sand it all over so it's super smooth. Here in the US I'd go a lumberyard and ask if they had any scraps of 2-by untreated hardwood. They'd might charge a couple bucks, or if it's a smaller more local place, I've even been given the scraps for free. They're pretty amused when they tell them what I want it for.

Really helpful tips, thank you. I am planning a wool coat and have just completed a muslin in very cheap poly fabric, so the info is good preparation for tackling my expensive wool. I have put it off for a year as I was scared to cut into my good fabric!

I just used a scrap piece of 18" 2X4 as a clapper. I found two different heavy wooden cutting board and a charcuterie fancy wooden board at Ikea in the discount As-Is room and use both of those instead of a clapper. Brazil has all kinds of hard words. When I was woodworking I used purple heart wood or a very dark black heavy wood (forget the name of it) but from Brazil. You need to check out lumber yard (do that have sawmills or lumberyards) for scrap wood.

Hello Karina Awesome video! If you don't have access to a clapper, just get some raw wood in a hardware store you cut to a manageable size and sand for a smooth finish.

Dear Karina: I have access to clappers I could purchase.... But I decided to simply go to the hardware store and purchase a 1x 3 x 20 piece of oak instead. It's small enough for me to handle while pressing and long enough to press pants and longer seams better than I could with the regular size traditional clapper. It's just a piece of board so it's stable and lightweight. Maybe you'd consider doing this?

Good video with lots of tips for sewing with wool. Thank you. I want to make a chore jacket out of wool but I’m not sure what I should use for a muslin as before I invest in the 100% boiled wool, would like to test the pattern first. Do you have any suggestions what fabric to use for muslin?

The only place that I use a flat seam, is the underarm sleeve seam of a garment that I am going to have to iron. Flat seams lie conveniently flat, even after washing.

So the hem doesnt look puffy, do you put the tricot interfacing on the hem allowance or on top of the allowance? (Like if your hem is 2 inches, would you put the interfacing 2 inches from the raw edge of the hem?)
