Mage Armor from Eldritch Knight, with 20 Dexterity (easily doable if the race increases dex, and at level 4 they have an ASI to help out), with a Shield and Defensive fighting style. 13 + 5 + 2 + 1 = 21 ac Though, that depends on if your DM counts mage armor as being usable with the Defense fighting style. I kinda disagree as some of the lowest prices you can find are about a few thousand and most common magic items can be 13,0000gp just because. In a new game I'm in the dm started us at lvl 10 and we all had a budget to buy stuff and we could not afford almost all of the stuff the list.

@@christophercrafte I can see that being pretty frustrating. But I don't sell magic items in stores in my campaign save for potions or spell scrolls and similar one time use items. When you roll for treasure in the book’s table and give a low level party a Rod of Security is when you realize when to stop using said table.
@mindlessscientist37724 жыл бұрын
I mean, at that point isn't the game over? They can live in paradise where not even Ao could touch them. That's when you say the whole group gets tires of adventuring and have them roll new characters!

Mindless Scientist They can also train the he** out of themselves, they just stay there until they reach max level and can go around without any troubles or fear in the world (except for a tarasque).
@Cuuniyevo3 жыл бұрын
Even apart from the GM having the option to reroll (or just pick) items on the table that they don't want in the campaign, the Rod of Security isn't particularly overpowered. It's powerful, certainly, but not too much. It gets you and your buddies to safety for an amount of time limited by how many there are. Assuming you're taking just a party of 5 people, you can stay in there for a very long time and rest back to full, plot and prepare, etc. They want to hide in there for a month? Fine, the GM can come up with all sorts of consequences for when they come back out because time marches on. Time still passes in the outside world, so your enemies will also be able to rest, plot and prepare with the added bonus of still being able to enact their plots on the outside world, and maybe even lay traps for when you come back. Furthermore, you cannot use it again until 10 days have passed after you leave. In adventuring terms, it's something you save as a last resort panic button that doesn't solve any of your long-term problems. It's really really cool, but it's not game over. Training is an optional rule to unlock the benefits of a level you've already gained, not to gain more levels on top. For whoever is interested, here are the numbers by the book. For each roll on the treasure hoard, the chance of getting a Rod of Security is: 0% from CR 0-4; 0.04% from CR 5-10. .5% from CR 11-16; .4% at CR 17+. Taking into account the recommended number of times they roll on the tables over the course of a campaign, those odds are upgraded to; 0%; .71756%; 5.8377%; 3.15556%. The odds of them getting 1 Rod of Security ever from level 1-20 is therefore 9.4634%, heavily weighted towards mid-to-late in the game.

This is pretty dope and relevant to my interests. I have a 6 min-maxed character party from a capital city that has magic items for sale. I had a supplement from dsmguils that that suggested rolling percentile to see how well stocked it was. they rolled 99. They could straight up spend their gold on (somewhat accessible) magic items. With a little prep they can take on almost anything. I had them up against an ancient dragon controlled by the shade of a former archdevil; They demolished it so I had the archdevil summon allies. It summoned archduke Bitru of Dis whom they'd previously pissed off and had the ability to summon an Erinyes with 3 legendary actions. They then killed him and his flock of greater devils too (although with difficulty and a little divine intervention). They got 2 rolls on the 17+ table and rolled real high. I'm not even sure what would threated them at this point with the loot they found there (3 major legendaries and like 1M gold & plat). My point is, while it's fun to have them wreck 3 legendary encounters per adventuring day and have whole cultures petition their aid, my next campaign might use these tables instead. I shudder to think what this party will be like at lvl 16-20. Maybe mind flayers. They dumped int.

The tables in the DMG are more guidelines, my tip is to roll the gold and how much of each items they get from certain table, but then instead of rolling in the tables just pick what you thing makes more sense. For instance says you roll loot and has to pick 3 items from the table A, so cause is not that hard of a dungeon and the party has a bag of holding instead just give them two potions of healing a 1st lvl spell scroll

I just pre-roll the tables from the DMG beforehand. There are tools for that online, and I can re-roll everything with one click. When I get something cool I may always replace unfitting or broken items with other ones of the same rarity. I don't mind the randomness, and sometimes it inspires me to insert some subplots onto the game. My players were level 7 when I rolled a mirror of life trapping on the treasure hoard. When I learned what it was, I thought it was broken, but I decided to roll with it. It was in the treasure hoard of a kraken cult, underwater, and one of the cultists bargained with the PCs, who were inprisoned there, to help them free in exchange for the "magic mirror" from the hoard. It went well, and later when the players eventually found out about the mirror, they realized they may have made a mistake and there's a plot hook hanging now!

This came at about the perfect time in the campaign I'm playing. Normally our DM does milestone leveling, but since we're doing a survival campaign there isn't really any story checkpoints to use... So we decided to put in a system where the gold value of our loot (or just gold) can be traded in for XP. He also introduced a villain that has a lot of magic. I forwarded him the tables, since loot will be important now beyond just food, and magic items will be a thing and the Cape of Mountebank *really* shouldn't be worth the same as a instant fortress, and the Bag of Holding should be worth a lot more.

Man, you're showing your age in the game a bit (or lack thereof!), but that's a good thing! You're homebrewing, putting new ideas out there, running your game, your way, and that's a good thing! Totally respect the hustle. Who doesn't play a bunch of RPGs, and then immediately think, "I could write that better!". It's cool seeing newer generations of players discover the game and start building it their way! No disrespect intended, I was born in 1976 and played my first D&D game in maybe 1984 or 1986 or so with a friend of mine from school. It's just fun watching the newer generation run up against the same shit we used to rail about back in the 1980s and 1990s! Just be glad you skipped over the whole "Satanic Panic" nonsense of the mid-1980s. I got a bit of that from my mom. It was a real thing that parents not hip to the hobby were worried about. A friend of mine in grade school would play a little D&D with me, but couldn't let his mom know, because it's *EVIL!* :D :D :D Just know, guys like us have been doing this for my entire life, and I'm a lot older than you are (spoiler alert: I'm 43, about to be 44). Believe it or not, there are tons of good DMs out there that can think through a good scenario and a treasure hoard at the end, and don't need a ton of dice to do it! All it takes is some experience with the framework of the game!

Important to note with the DMG treasure table is that it's not meant to be used for every fight or anything. Maybe the most baby levels of it now and then. But mostly it's for BBEG who may have things for any number of reasons. ALSO they're going by the CR of the boss but it's still a reward for the whole campaign up to the boss, so it's allowed to be pretty swank. Another worthy note is that players don't always get to keep everything they find. If you really think you gave them something busted then maybe it gets stolen or is vital to something important. That plus 2 breastplate is a family heirloom of the Dukes and despite the fact that you rescued his naive son from the hag he'd still really like to have that. Intangible reward of more NPC gratitude and resources via that? More quests maybe? Definitely not something to do all the time, but still a worthy way to let the party have cool treasure for some periods and if they want to keep some stuff it might be challenging in it's own right.

So I haven't been playing 5e for all that long. Running a game and it's been going good for over a year now. They've gotten into some good scrapes beaten down some boss monsters and they have like all the game breaking stuff. Saves+2, Ac+1 or +2, Attack rolls+1, Spell attacks and DC's +1 (They don't all have all of this stuff but it is in the "party loot") There's only 4 people tho, we started with 6 and 2 just had to bail out, it's over internet after all. Because they're a smaller group I think them being this strong works out, their side in combat has less turns but very impactful turns. I mean they don't seem all that over powered. They got into a fight with 2 stone giants and nearly all died. The wizard flew up into the air. The giants took turns right after each other, after him. Learned that day not to declare attacks before rolling damage. "The giants both throw a large stone as you are an obvious airborne target" First hit, second crit 4d10+6 + 4d6 fall damage + 8d10+6 (The rolls were stuipd high I think 39 + 12 + 81) to a level 10 wizard with 55hp give or take. First one knocked him stuipd he fell down losing con save on fly. As he brushed himself off the rest of the party just saw him vanish under a large rock. Understandably he was not happy. I think he instantly died round 2. They managed just to win, but it wasn't easy. Got him back up and cast ye old Revivify. I made em roll for it, his chest was mostly caved in being crushed under a rock. They nat 20'd so we sort of improvised his return. He was alive but was still dying, I told him he would be conscious at 1 hp and could be healed to half max hp, but still makes a death save every 1d4 hours until he had 3 successes, 3 fails and he would fall to internal injuries. After which the Revivify spell wouldn't be enough to raise him as his body was too heavily damaged. That night camping was super tense, the cleric refused to take rest and chose to keep watch on him over the whole night. Cast Resistance on him for 8 hours straight. I think on the second save was when it made the difference, rolled an 8 got a +4. Still I have to respect the RP. She was a life cleric after all. Damn great day of D&D.

I love your content @XP to Level 3, but this is one of the main reasons I made the switch to Pathfinder 2E. Treasure/items are organized by level which are also capable of being crafted if you are the level of the item or higher and have the proficiency in Crafting. I look forward to your next video!

My dm bought grim hollow and we are going to be playing a campaign soon! Grim hollow sounds so cool, it feels like innistrad and Game of thrones combined.

This reminds me of the time my party got a massive hoard of 40 magic items, but they were pretty much all potions and scrolls. For realism's sake, I think the GM should roll for treasure beforehand, then have the creatures actually wear and use that stuff if they can.

I keep hoping my copy of Grim Hollow comes in. I ordered a physical book and been hyped for it for about 6 months now. Anyway, as a new DM, I love this chart and am definitely going to need to use it.

This gonna come in handy... Might use it to acurately balance and stock a magic store, while I keep the "lol" 27d4 x10 Cp as the loot I prepare before hand

I will see about using this. I have the item cards so I went through them and sorted them by types and what they could actually find in regular shops and stuff. When I need some random items I have a small deck set aside. I have the player roll a dice that is the number of cards in the deck. Potions and scrolls get put back in most other items are left out. Who knows though this might end up as being the better way because I was considering making my own tables using the cards

800 gold pieces on a basilisk. Optional take: It might be video gamey, but I allow a group to roll a nature check to skin it for its hide and organs..skill check will determine if they get full price or not. It's something more than just saying no the owlbear doesn't have a +1 flamebringer.

I feel called out. My level 8 hexblade sorcerer ended up getting lucky with loot and has an ac of 22. My dm has specifically been trying to kill me for like 6 sessions straight. It's not my fault you gave me all this power dawg.

this is very helpful. As much as i love rolling on tables, the vanilla loot tables are ridiculous.
@danielturner18914 жыл бұрын
Also, I do think if your players kill a beholder you can scale up the loot a bit. Like, if your players do something crazy impressive, give them something amazing. But you can do it at discretion instead of supercharging your entire PC party on accident in such a way that treasure will lose all meaning going forward.

Personally I like slapping a random cleric spell onto a weapon and let the user cast it once per long rest for free. All the cleric spells are really good and know one knows the difference between "inflict wounds wand" and "*the ring if the necrotic soul*"

It depends what level and what type of game you are running for the problems with items that allow you to fly. For example a new player I have in my Dragon of Icespire Peaks wanted to be a witch and I was feeling generous so I gave her the broom of flying. It hasn't done anything yet besides let her travel faster because many of the quests end up at a large house or an underground dungeon so it doesn't break anything. Though I do see how any open field combat would make them hard to pin down, but that is why you have enemy spellcasters and archers. They won't be more than 150ft away and enemies would be decently equipped so a longbow is never out of the question.

There is a line in this video that kinda makes me think that artificers might be OP, especially if you take 1 level multi class in fighter before starting the artificer path just to get heavy armor proficiency and maybe defensive fighting style (can go warforged too). Heck, you can force your dm to give you +1 armor that goes to +2 later, +1 shield of repulsion, cloak of protection and ring of protection... Plus, if you are a battle smith you can cast shield.

I use CR Mixed with action economy to determine how hard an encounter will be. For example, a level 5 party of 4 people with 6 total attacks per round can usually take on a CR 6 Encounter with 4 attacks per round. (Attacks include spells and cantrips as attacks, regardless of whether or not it actually does damage and counting each individual attack in multiattack as a separate attack) Legendary actions and lair actions are not considered in this, as for those I have not found a single way to quantify how powerful they may or may not be, so If a monster has lair actions or legendary actions, that is probably the only encounter for the day and I assume it will be deadly.

my players are going through your version of the tomb of horrors in order to get a magical artifact to save the world,,, but since there needs to be a hoard of treasure i just went and looked for some fun magic items i didnt think would be too horrible to give them, or would maybe come in handy later, like the hat of vermin or the foldable boat. they also wont have any idea what item they're grabbing until they examine it later, but I will definitely make sure that they grab the plot dependant item

I used this table, and they rolled one of the red items so I made it the focal point of the game where the BBEG wants it, and the party has to play keep away with it while trying to also kill the BBEG.

Hey Jacob, you should check out the Alchemy Almanac and the Complete Armorer's Handbook by heavyarms, I think you will really like them. They are revisions of the alchemy and potion brewing system, as well as the armor and weapon system, with an added runesmithing equipment. They are pretty balanced, and definitely spice up those usually lackluster mechanics.

You don't roll for rewards anyways, you currate them to fit the part depending on what makes sense for the monster.
