One of the biggest regrets in my life was that I never got to see the Grateful Dead with Ron "Pigpen" McKernan at the helm. Didn't start seeing The Dead until 1980, and Pigpen was long gone at that point, but thankfully we still have the recordings, like this, to look back on. Thank you for digging deep into their past, and NOT stopping the music. It still produces goosebumps.

Pigpen brought that gritty blues sound to the Dead, and I love him for that. Great selection.✌️❤️🎶

Pigpen's "The Stranger: Two Souls in Communion" and "It Hurts me Too" are fantastic Grateful Dead tunes.

As a longtime deadhead, it warms my soul to see a new or newer fan feel it.... when they "get it" you can almost see it. It personally reminds me of the excitement I felt when I first got into them and allows me to feel that again vicariously.

The Grateful Dead did their first concert in Maine and I got to sit on the stage in front of Jerry Garcia all through the New Riders and Dead concert. (Jerry played pedal steel with NRPS). The Fillmore concert was few days after Maine.

The culture shock for that Bangor show must have been severe.

@@JackCerro Not for me. I had been going to Dead concerts since 1967. The city of Bangor probably found it a bit strange though. I remember Jerry saying that they were going to shut off the power at midnight and they had to wrap it up. Johnny B. Goode.

Well...the tune that bassist Phil Lesh sets up by welcoming his former bandmate to the stage (and in fact it was recorded on the nite before) is a slice of electrified symphonic cosmic jazz called "Dark Star," with the (excellent!) version on this album clocking in at a brisk 14 minutes as compared to the one on Live/Dead that goes for 9 more ---so, d'ya reckon yourself up for the Dark Star challenge...???

This was a live concert👌👌, listen again you can hear them.✌✌ The late great Otis Redding wrote this song!👍 The Black Crowes had a hit with it, but their version doesn’t even come close to The Grateful Dead with PigPen singing!!!👌👍✌️

This show was a must have for Deadheads trading tapes. Pigpen was a good soul. His dad was the first white dj on a black blues/folk radio station in the bay area. That is where Pig learned his stuff. If you would like to give Ron McKernan some more love on a different level try Katie Mae on Bears Choice if you can get around the copyright. It is live. If you want the Jerry route I can help you because it's so much more than the Dead. I've listened to this a hundred times and still can't leave. If you ain't movin you ain't alive. :)

there is something about the way they play that i just love, no doubt. realy love watching people react to my favorite band. i always tell people when they say that they dont like the dead i tell them actually you DO like the dead, you jsut dont know it yet because you havent found the right song that turns you on. thats the thing about the dead, it only takes once to flip that switch and i have had friends go literally a lifetime of disliking the dead and they start hanging around me while im listening and then they hear that one song that turns them on and its right down the rabbit hole they go! there is something really special about these earlier shows with pigpen. his energy is unmatched. truth be told im an 80s baby so i am a huge fan of the brent era but the exploratory jams of these earlier shows are super special. there is still a ton of psychedelic influence going on here, jerry hadnt gone down the heroin hole yet, everyone was playing so tight together. i am subbed and looking forward to enjoying more of the dead with you!

This version has better sound quality (it is The Fillmore East, after all) and a better Pigpen rap, but for my money the definitive version is Hollywood Palladium 8/6/71. Jerry’s solo and the overall energy are just unbelievable. 🎸🔥

This is a live recording of a classic show widely traded among Deadheads. Almost any Hard To Handle from spring 71 is just as good, imo. They're getting ready to go into a Dark Star Jam. and just taking a minute to let Tom Constantin set up. Most Live Dead records have brief moments of stage chatter and re-tuning instruments on the fly. There are better Dark Star jams than the one from this show; there are two in the Dick's Pick's series I would recommend - The one from Dick's Pick's 8 (Binghamton) and Dick's Pick's 16 (Filmore 1969). Just start with the first Dark Star on either and don't stop until the music stops. They are long. Really long. They are also indescribably beautiful.
