I decided to share my reaction to a HSN video on selling some 24kt plated State Quarters. I want collectors to analyze and open your eyes to the sells pitches and sales tactics used by the TV coin "companies".
Realize when you buy coins and coin sets from them that it is not a good investment. If you ever decide to sell or leave them to family members, they will never realize any profit on these coins.

I know you’re saying, but a lot of us (well I don’t know if a lot of is) But I know I love pitchman. It’s an artform the reason it feels like people are getting ripped off is because they’re selling them a dream is that dream is this particular item is a good deal and I don’t know if you ever go to the county fair or not but my favorite area is the pitchmen area and sometimes I get sucked into it but I love listening to the way they sell I mean it is is the best honestly it’s 100% American you’re not being completely dishonest and a lot of people already know that you know this might be a dream and not real you know sure there are some out there that think they got something is worth a ton of money we’ve all seen the South Park episode where they’re selling all this gold jewelry and fake gems for like a ton of money and seeing is worth a ton of money when we all know it’s not but but sure yes I understand where you’re coming from though

When I was in college, like 2001, my roommate and I would prank call HSN when they had coin auctions asking them to guarantee the value of the investment. It was hilarious, they put one of our calls on the air. We are both avid coin people and thought that junk they were slinging was hilarious. Good video, keep 'em coming.

My friends mom spent her entire retirement, over $200,000.00 buying coins for her grandkids to inherit. After she passed they found out she had (1) gold coin that may have been worth $200. the house was full of state quarters, plated coins from Liberia, cancelled stock certificates, and more. It was criminal what these people did to this poor woman. They literally robbed her.

Man I've been there. I had a grandmother of a guy I played football with in high school come in my store to cash in her coin collection to fund a vacation. Her collection was very well organized and she had a receipt for every piece, sadly it was all Littleton and HSN sets that no matter what way I figured it was only worth $500 or so. Most of the stuff I just told her to keep since it was only worth face value. I felt horrible when I seen the look on her face, after she left I went through the receipts and found that she had spend over $5000.00 on what amounted to be worth about $600 to $650 retail. She had a case of gold plated buffalo nickels with no dates or partial dates that they charged her $5.00 to $10 each on and a state quarter album that cost her $75, even had her name on it that was worth about $10 in change. It really made me sick to my stomach to see how badly they ripped her off and made her feel that she was making a investment into her future, man you should have seen some of the advertisements they sent her "once in a lifetime opportunity!!!!" Absolutely criminal!

We have companies here in the UK selling 'coins' and 'limited edition' collectors coins etc etc (that aren't legally coins and are supposed to be labelled as medallion's) and they are marketed at older people who possibly buy them thinking they are investing in something valuable to leave to their kids/grandkids. They are worth fuck all. Nothing. Zilch. NADA. They prey on old vulnerable people, they sell them under company names such as 'Windsor mint' or 'Royal Elizabeth mint' and similar official sounding names (the official maker of UK currency is the Royal mint so they are all variations on that theme) they deliberately use official sounding names to trick people in to believing that they are getting official limited edition currency that is worth buying and indicate the value will only go higher and higher. It's a bullshit practice. It should be illegal. It's a con. It's like snake oil. My father passed away thinking he had done something good with his savings to leave to his 7 kids and 50+ grandkids and 100+ great grandkids by buying this worthless shite infested tat. £1000s upon £1000s spent on shit. We would rather he had given it to charity than waste his money and his last few years on earth being conned. I would donate them to charity but they aren't even worth the scrap value to recycle them. They literally go for pennies on eBay. Limited edition my arse. There are millions of the cunts on eBay! One of the 'coins' my father bought for £300+ from one of these companies, there are currently over 3000 for sale on eBay, some going for 50p, some on buy it now for £2.50. but nobody is even buying them for that price. Those companies should be ashamed and I hope the fuckers that own the companies all die from cancer of the arsehole. I wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire.

M.B. I believe that a "coin" can only be called a coin if two conditions are met. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I think 1. It has to be struck by a national mint. US Mint, Royal Canadian Mint, etc. and 2. It has to have a denomination. A silver eagle is a coin because it is struck by the US Mint and has a denomination of $1.

"Gold plated" is also a gimmick... because the actual gold content is so small, it's not even worth mentioning. The layer of gold is extremely fine on top, almost to be ignored. The total gold content in all these plated coins together won't even fill a 1/10th ounce gold coin.

Another thing the younger generation needs to do is to actually spend time with their parents, grandparents etc. and make sure they're staying on the right financial path. I have a family member whose grandma died recently. Grandma was somewhat wealthy. She inherited grandpa's wealth etc. Well it turns out the kids/other family member were not making sure grandma was using the wealth wisely. Turns out when she died the kids and other family members started going through her stuff. Turns out grandma spent the vast majority of her wealth on buying jewelry on HSN and in the later part of her life, she was purely living on social security. No money in the bank. It was estimated she spent around 300-500k on jewelry on HSN and most of it was appraised as basically "junk". So when grandma died each of the kids and family members basically got several boxes full of jewelry that was basically junk. Another thing you want to make sure is that grandma/grandpa don't get involved with gambling. If your grandpa/grandma/parents are into this stuff then you'll most likely end up inheriting nothing.

Man, you had me gasping !! I just started watch your videos, at least 3 a night ! In 2011 I purchased 2 MS70 Silver Eagles, first Strike, that came with a red oak presentation box, and 2 certificates for free grading of 8 coins ! One of the coins had marking, or burned spot on the edge at the 2:00 area ! Horrible looking !! I also bought 12 BU Morgan Silver Dollars for $59.99 each !! These coins were Uncirculated, but the bag marks were all over the place, sad looking ! I've never bought those Gimmick items, and also laugh at that same woman, as she plays up the coins to the viewers !! I purchased twice from Mike Meizack, and got hosed twice !! Thanks for displaying your knowledge in the videos, and also thanks the the entertainment !! 🔥

It's obvious to me that their main target audience are the blue haired senior citizens in their rocking chairs, with a cat on their laps watching their informercials. They probably think it would be a nice birthday or graduation gift for one of their grandchildren. Don't watch 'em with a box of wine and a credit card grandma ;)....

When they put the definite article "the" in front of "24k gold-plated" they imply strongly that the quarters are plated by the mint. Both of those on-air people probably believe they were. I've collected coins by year from change since I was a kid. I learned all about coin collecting as a kid. And how long ago was I a kid? I actually extracted a 1909 VDB (not S) Lincoln from change and a 1916-D Mercury from change. Exciting times, those. Never dug the state quarters myself.

I collect some US coins and paper money, but most of my collection is ancient coins. I remember a company that might still be in existence that would issue a color catalog of "valuable" ancient coins, and I could see right off that the coins they were selling for big bucks were the coins I could get at a dealer's $5 or $10 "pick'em" box at the shows, with some fancy packaging. I wonder if these HSN sellers are a division of "Glitzco Packaging". :)

Thanks for posting this. I've come across the home shopping channels selling these and similar "collector" coins from time to time and I often stop in for a few minutes and shake my head. It's really sad and deceptive how they take advantage of people who don't know any better. I wish people would take the time to be educated and invest in REAL valuable coins.

It burns my ass as well when I see HSN, or ANYBODY misrepresent collectibles like coins. I often point out errors in listings on eBay, and about 30-40% of the time they are jerks to me for doing this. Obviously I wouldn't buy this crap, but the thought of a new, young collector getting taken by these lying sacks of sh** just pisses me off.

Daniel you couldn't be more dedicated to the folks that follow you. I knew it was only gonna get a few minutes on your site.. They are truly comical and if the coins are such a great deal they wouldn't have many of them, and when they exclaim 'very few left' wait a week + call them, I guarantee they still have em. Many years ago I got some mercury dimes from one of the late night -early morning shows and got lucky because I waited for coins that weren't coated or in any special boxes and looked up what they were going for, I haven't looked at them since I got them but one day hope to be pleasantly surprised when I find them and maybe they're worth twice what I paid, but unless there's some mistakes on them I don't expect to get much more, and will consider myself lucky because I used to watch them after a good night of parties..✌💰🍻😎✨
