I have a lot of the coin sets but I bought them on the secondary market at a greatly reduced rate. I don’t pay over $10 for the sets that have the half,quarter, dime, nickel and penny. For the Littleton coins in the plastic bag I buy them dirt cheap and leave them in the bag because it does have the grade on it. Basically I am saying that I don’t see anything wrong with buying those coins as long as you buy selectively and you buy smart. I do agree with you on the certificate of authenticity, in the old days people could use them in the outhouse. If you know what I mean. Thanks

That would have been great but impossible because I'm older! HAHA It wasn't funny when I was a little guy down in Austin, Texas, and I pedaled my bike about 8 miles from our house to a coin shop in downtown Austin. I had to do it and get home before my parents got home. So I was pedaling my butt off, and on one of those Schwinn one speed balloon tire bikes. I got no help on hills. Just my 11 year old coin obsession. I had a few coins, but not many, to trade. I think I even had a 2 cent piece that didn't look too good, especially after I "cleaned" it. Then it looked horrible :( I took my few coins into their shop for my 20 minutes in the coin world before I had to hit the road back home. They did trade my coins. Yeah I got a flying eagle coin, as I recall. But it didn't seem like I got much for my trade of several coins plus the little bit of money I had. Then off I went, excited with my first coin shop trip, even though I felt sort of ripped off (I don't think I really was so much looking back - I had high hopes, though). But I did get home almost in time. My mother asked me where I'd been (she was just getting home from the University so it was no big deal) and I said, "Just out riding!" haha Not, "Well, I took a quick 16 or so mile ride into downtown Austin!!' hahaha

Prepackaged coin sets are fun! Well, they can be. I've learned the hard way how to buy and sell certain coins. Experience is the best, and often hardest, way to learn. Videos like these weren't always around. So, I may have lost a few dollars early on but not any more. With such information at your finger tips there is only one person to blame if you get scammed - yourself. Thank you for taking the time to educate me a little more :)

Thank you so much for this information. Being brand new to the hobby, I've already purchased two coin packages sent to me for approval, and also have been setting aside coins that I incorrectly thought have valuable errors, that are really not valuable. Now, I'm far more realistic, dealing only with local dealers, and not thinking half of my collection will make me rich. Thumbs up and subscribed!

Should tell people coas are only good to the company that gives them. There are many companies that are good to there paperwork, but you need to know who they are first. Don't blindly trust. PSA, JSA, CGC are qualified grading companies. No matter how good the coa looks, know the company behind it first. It's good advice on the coins, need more people like you telling this kind of stuff, good idea and good job.

That ancient coin looks like something I see in the shows in the $5 "pick'em" box, and the kind I used to be able to buy for $100/100. In one of those $100/100 lots, I did get an extremely rare coin of the empress Galla Placidia once. I see some of those coins actually slabbed by the regular grading companies go for about $50 at auction, but that one in an envelope is a Christmas gift the non-collector buys for his collector friend and overpays for.

thanks , Truth teller. Not many of you out there especially as dealers. But unfortunately, my journey led me to the same conclusions. Old coins have a melt value if silver. To Be honest my dear Daniel, i just started to collection the coins in 1997 and in 1998 i converted to paper money because in my time there was no dealers around me to buy the beautiful coins or know more news about the latest news about coins and their latest update and indeed the real problem for me was the storage of them and then i changed the coins in paper, but if i find something beautiful i may buy it, but this coin will be very limited and with the beautiful details you provided and shared with us i will be more careful when i buy a coin in the future ^_^

I agree with your logic on pretty much everything in this video except maybe the Silver Eagles, at least for cases like myself. I wasn't the one who bought the coin; my grandfather did. I "inherited" the coin in its packaging and all, and it's still unopened. I feel like taking it out of the package would mean I'd either lose it or inadvertently harm it somehow. Since I'm not the one who got suckered into buying it, I think I'll save it for a PCGS bulk-grade with other things I find and see what MS it gets. But that's just about the _only_ time I could see having these, to be fair lol

All this dose is limit the collectors that will buy them and yes lowers the value. To many that's enough to not buy it. But give any object enough time and the more rare it becomes thinking changes. The bad side to that is you may not be alive when it happens. But in the end if you enjoy it, how much it's worth no longer matters.

Anyway, I tend to purchase higher end coins and thus never really see this stuff in those types of holders to begin with nor would I buy it anyway. The only recent purchase I did make in a plastic gimmick was the old school Paramount red holder from the Redfield hoard. These have a story attached to them though and it makes it that much more interesting. I enjoy seeing how the grading of coins were conducted during those times. Anyhow, good video as always Daniel!

Years ago I found a well hidden wheat penny laying in the dirt by the road, dont know how long it was there, when I cleaned the dirt off it I noticed the copper appeared to be coming off then I saw the year 1943. I still have it.
@wasacrazy8
@wasacrazy8 4 жыл бұрын
1943 pennies are made of steel because of WWII. If yours is actually copper as you say, you should take it to a dealer TODAY. That is extremely rare and worth a ton of cash.

This is why stuff like this will always be around.People will always be attracted to fancy looking packaging and boxes. This is why people pay 2-3 times the price they should be paying for items, not only in this hobby, but all items in general. It works, bright sparkling and fancy accessories work.People buy the box, not what is in it.Look at cereal as an example, they put a cartoon character on the box or a pic of a 5 cent toy...Boom kids are crying about how it is their favorite cereal....The same cereal that you have in the kitchen closet at home that they hate.( The one at home does not have the cartoon or toy on box). In our hobby though, it can be more dangerous and sad as the ones buying will 100% of the time lose money and not realize it until it is time to try and sell the garbage they bought. Unfortunately Daniel you know this stuff will continue, but it is good that you make this video.Im sure a few( hopefully many) uneducated, newer collectors will see and avoid this trap....Hopefully !!!

Morning Daniel!!🍵 Again, makes me think of the scammers that prey on Veterans with fancy Armed Services looking packaging in the Legion magazine. Also, when I was a child and sent off to a comic book company to receive a free one square inch gold mining claim from Alaska! 🤣

Some of those fancy holders does make it a little more tempting to buy something different or give a false sense of value. At least that's how I feel about them. I have bought some in auctions and then regret it when I get them in hand. Coins are normally not even in fair condition.

I will say it they come from Littleton Queen company and they are so overpriced it is unbelievable . I do kind of like the sets in plastic when I can pick them up at melt value they just kind of look cool for kids to learn about silver and coins but only if you get them at melt value.

I think if they can be bought cheaply enough, they are good to give to young collectors. "This is what you DON'T buy." When I was a kid I bought some worthless crap and I wish I'd had a mentor to tell me to avoid it.

My dad bought some sets, like the Americana, yesteryear, disappearing collection etc (6 coins per set), back in 1970's. The dates are all common dates as I expected. I have not broken them up as they are a reminder of my dad. But since they are so old, is there a chance these would have been cleaned before sealing them in their cases? All the silver are tarnished, nothing looks polished, but this just might be because they are over 40 years or more in the case. Just curious. Thanks.

Recommendation to coin collectors: Do not buy a set of multiple coins for over 20$, unless all the coins are *VERY* underpriced.

I hate to think how much money my dad wasted on stuff like this. After he passed away and i cleaned out his house there were tons of coins like you speak of and have shown in this video. I swear there are over 500 sacajawea dollars in those sealed bags. The coin store I went to told me to take all the coins in the plastic cases and the bags and just spend them. Least he had some good coins that are worth alot of money. Now they are in my safe for a rainy day.

I wouldn't agree that a damaged coin doesn't bring more money. I just attended an action last Sunday and watch a 1936 buffalo AU 50 bring $9 right after it sold a 1936 buffalo EF 40 with die crack sold for $56... I wouldn't have paid that ever but that's some people intrest I guess...

A die crack is not a cleaned coin. Isolated events do not make true statements for the whole.
