In my experience with American schools, both as a student and as a parent, meals were not free unless you qualified as low-income. Nowadays, your parents pay money into your school lunch account, and then when you buy school meals it comes out of your account. During Covid the school districts got funds from the government and meals were free to all students in a lot of places.

Its similar in the UK, meals weren't expensive like they sound in Australia. But you'd have a dinner card in comprehensive which you or your parents would put money on and you'd use that. A meal in my school would be around £3 ish.

This rings true for me in the states. Elementary school I think parents paid for hot lunch tickets, so kids could either have whatever the school was serving that day, or bring their own. Middle and high school was al la carte, so you could pick what you wanted but pay for each item, or bring your own.

I would just follow the TWO other black girls around in the school (we weren't even really friends, I just felt safe around them) because people would casually pick on my African features. Apparently afros are really funny to white kids? Maybe because their only association with them was clowns and funny halloween costumes? I was super insecure about being a black girl in a really white city. High school wasn't the greatest... I definitely became the art girl so I could avoid talking to people and just have my head in my sketchbook but I'm kind of glad it went that way because now I have a successful career in animation and illustration :)

Same here, as a mixed person whose school was very "race segregated". Not legally thankfully but usually you hung out with people from your race and nobody outside of that. Never felt good for either groups so I drew a lot. I'm an illustration student at uni now so very cool. 💖

Yes. I was in choir, speech club (forensics) , either acted or ran sets for every play and musical, went to every home game for basketball and football because I had friends on the teams and in the band, was a TA, attended every dance we had after each home game, played piano, had a part-time job, and held down a 3.75GPA. Could've done better if I'd bothered to study or did all my homework. Sometimes I wonder how the heck I did it, but I was fueled by ramen, Diet Coke, and chocolate chip cookies.

For me personally High School was a really tough time. I remember always being bullied a lot in primary school and than after my dad passed away I changed schools and was able to escape that crowd, and start fresh. I remember all the students being extremely sweet and kind towards me. It was such a shock to my system. I even remember once I fell over and hurt myself on my hand during camp and one of the girls in my class who I didn't know very well came running over to see if I was okay. I remember she asked if it was okay if she held my hand and if I minded if she said a little prayer. I was VERY confused, it wasn't that big a deal and no one had ever asked something like that before, but I just said yes because to me it was the thought that counted behind the act, not the act itself. Even if I thought it was a bizarre thing to do I was touched and thanked her for her kindness. I hadn't experienced anything like it before. I was never really bullied in High School, so much as I was really affected with the passing of my father and the trauma from primary school that I became very reclusive and would hide a lot of the time. I remember the majority of High School I would just spend lunch time and morning recess in the toilets or the library escaping. My fellow classmates ended up talking to me at one point and asking if I was okay and that if I ever needed to talk they were there for me. It was such a different experience from my other school, but I struggled a lot. It wasn't until I finally started seeing the counselor there that I got the courage to ask a group of my fellow peers if I could join them at lunch playing cards. I found out one of the girls also went to the same ballroom dancing place I used to love going to before I left after shifting, so I decided to join back again and it helped with finding that spark of joy again. It was then I started to make some new friends and we would try to support one another the best we could. **TRIGGER WARNING - SUICIDE** Sadly I remember in grade 10, one of the people that would sometimes join us for cards at lunch ended up committing suicide over the mid year holiday and it was absolutely heartbreaking. He was always quiet like myself, but very sweet and would have the sweetest smile. I felt my heart break for his family and recall a huge service being held in the auditorium for him and a massive discussion was held surrounding mental health awareness and more counselors were brought in for anyone who felt they needed to talk. Then my best friend I had known since we lived across from each other when I was 10 sadly passed away when we were in grade 11. It was a horrible car accident, so sudden and unexpected, she was such a beautiful shining light. I recall her dreaming of becoming an actress for years and then one day she changed her mind and said all she wanted was to start a family and to live a happy and healthy life filled with love. She was such a deep soul with the most contagious laughter I've ever heard. I was blessed to know each and every one of them ❤ Needless to say, mentally I wasn't coping and so my psychiatrist was able to make it so I could finish grade 11 by just completing the assignments and not the exams and then for grade 12, rather than go back to school, I was able to complete it within the year at TAFE. I had to get some documents signed since I was technically underage at the time, but I got in and then one of my teachers there was so kind and understanding. The whole system was so much different to school that I even started to improve in my grades. From averaging a C at High School I was suddenly getting the equivalent of A+ all the time and all I needed was that little extra care, attention and time. I was able to get into University too and am now going for my honours. It was certainly a tough, sad road, but there are still many happy memories I can look back on and remember those I have loved and lost, so they still live on.

I sort of went through a similar experience. My dad passed away during my high school years and I was bullied by the teachers of all people. They disregarded my IEP (I’m disabled and at the time, I didn’t know it was illegal for them to disregard my IEP), yelled at me whenever I had a mental breakdown in class (they went so far as to tell me I wasn’t allowed to cry and grieve because I was ‘disrupting the class’ and whatnot), and dragged me down and convinced me I was no good and that I couldn’t do anything right. I became insecure, timid, and depressed and I attempted my life several times during those years. If it weren’t for my best friend Felix and my dad himself before he passed, I don’t know what I would have done, they bullied me before that as my dad was already dying and I would have panic attacks in class. Unfortunately, I’m still recovering from the trauma and I don’t think the damage can be fully undone. Their words may have broken me for good and damaged me beyond repair, but I’m not giving up and I will endure.

I was always the awkward quiet girl at my school, and I was always gossiped about when I was dating someone, or teased sometimes when I talked because no one thought I could because I was so quiet 🤣. Fortunately, people seemed to like me for the most part but I definitely had my "Mean girls" moments where I wanted to fit in with the more popular crowd and I'd honestly change that if I could. That wasn't who I was and I hate that I got sucked into it.

Fun to get to know a bit more about your life experiences this way. In my high school I remember liking people and never being reciprocated, so I never had a boyfriend of flings at this time, just cared a lot about doing well in school. We didn't really have dances, (I live in Brazil) but we did have a lot of events and things that I liked participating in. Got to be a part of a "Hunted House" type of experience that me and my collegues created, did dance presentations, organized a "Just Dance" competition, sang at a choire...it was fun. Before writing this I forgot I had done all of this. I was really insecure, but I had great friends and that helped a lot.

Thank you for sharing your experiences! They made me smile and cringe with you. High school is a wild time to look back on, isn't it? I was a big geek, even then, who loved drama club and dressed like Avril Lavigne but also like I was cosplaying an elf in Lord of the Rings 😅 I had a pretty up and down time. I had a glorious freshman year full of theater club, ditching with the Seniors, football games, and homecoming dances, first crushes, and all that. Then, I experienced a lot of bullying and anxiety in Sophomore year and fell in with a pretty bad dude who isolated me from the friends I had. But thankfully, I ditched him as summer rolled around and I spent a lot of time repairing relationships and rediscovering me. I joined the local church youth group and met great new friends and the boy who became my high school sweetheart. He took me to prom on a boat in our senior year and then I married him the following winter. 😊 I spent a lot of high school being wrapped up in my head about things that felt SO important back then. It's funny with some time the clarity it brought how trivial a lot of it was. I wish I could tell my younger self to enjoy the good times more and not so much the drama, but in the end, I guess that's just part of being a teen!

This was cute! In the US we did pay for school lunch in the cafeteria. I don’t think it was ever more than $5 (but I graduated in 1998 so who knows now!). They do in some schools offer a free breakfast for kids who might not be getting food at home and I think low income families may get some kind of break on school meals but I’m not sure. But they definitely weren’t free. I remember the best thing my school served were chocolate chip cookies and they were so gooey and warm like barely cooked. We also had vending machines so it was just junk food all over the place lol

I worked through school, though considering it was a farm school so did pretty much everyone else, and also because of the farm school thing, girls talked about all kinds of stuff. I wish I had experienced more during high school. I started dating a guy my mom introduced me to when I was 14. He was 3 years older than me and he was not interested in high school activities because he had already done them all. I feel like I missed out on so much because it was always a fight when I wanted to do things that he didn't. We married and had kids and were together for 15 years. We are still best friends but we have since remarried. I worked full time all through school so I missed out on so many activities. It wasn't terrible but I wish I would've made more time for myself.

My schoolmates always talked mean things behind my back,and I was really struggling to find my style,so my appearance was also a good reason to hurt me. Everyone getting free lunches is fairly new. As a parent it’s a relief. I graduated in 95 and when I was in high school you had to pay for your lunch every day. It cost around $2.50. I had to pay for my oldest kids school lunches. But around 3 years ago they finally became free for everyone.

My school system provided free breakfast to everyone. Lunch was fairly cheap ($2) or if you were low income you'd qualify for free lunch. There were also vending machines and some other extras to spend more money on, but they definitely made it so that everyone could eat. When I was in school (US, 80s and 90s), the cafeteria definitely was NOT free/included. In elementary/middle school we had to buy lunch tickets and then we got one of two choices available that day. High school you paid with cash per item. Kids with needs might get lunch tickets given to them or breakfast provided (most people didn't eat breakfast at school). You had to qualify for that and there was a huge stigma, which certainly wasn't fair.

I was pretty much a wallflower- focused on my studies, had a few crushes but never had the courage to tell them. However, I did invite one of my crushes to prom senior year, we went to the same church but different schools and he ended up finding himself a girlfriend and dancing with her most of the night. About American school lunches: They’re only free if you’re from an underprivileged family. It always costs money, usually your parents would load money onto your account and to pay you would enter your student ID in the lunch line. They would also accept cash. I never regularly got lunch from school, it would waste a lot of time waiting in line. A majority of students still bring packed lunches from home

My highschool had popular girls but none of them were mean to people outside of their little circle 🤣 they'd literally just bully or spread rumours about their own friends and everyone else just listens to the drama every day. I was a really studious girl but I also got warned a lot for eating in class with my friends (we sat at the back of the class). I remember when my whole class decided to ditch a big event and have a quick slumber party in the class (the class block was empty cause everyone were downstairs). School lunches here in the US are different depending on where you go to school. At some schools you have to pay for your lunches, but can get what's called a reduced fee for lunches if your family qualifies for it. One school I went to because I was in foster care so I qualified for reduced fee lunch, I only had to pay a quarter, or $0.25. Other schools here in the US do have free breakfast and lunch for all students. I went to quite a few different schools so I got to experience all of the above. Deli - To clarify something about cafeterias - at least in the US, you absolutely do have to pay for your lunch at the cafeteria. There ARE programs for free/reduced cost lunches for lower income students (so that might be where you're getting that?), but it's only for lower income kids - if your family makes anything resembling a living wage, you have to pay for lunch. When I was a kid (20 years ago lol) lunch at school was very affordable - like $2.50 I think? - but you did still have to pay and the food was usually terrible. Like I remember one of the most common meals being stale rolls, instant mashed potatoes, and frozen chicken nuggets - clearly they were also very healthy and balanced hahah. It's fascinating to learn that Australia doesn't have school cafeterias, but thought I would hopefully clear up how they work in the US (though, to be fair, I believe they do now try to serve healthier food - but I could be wrong?)!

The teacher assigned to my class (she didn't have all different subjects but was like responsible for us) HATED me for some reason. I remember she told me, after an oral presentation, that even though I qualified for an A, she didn't think I ~deserved~ it, so she would give me a C. We were alone when she told me so I had no witness and I was so shocked that I just let it slide. She also said that she didn't think I have ADHD (after I've been diagnosed and told my teacher) and wouldn't make any accommodation for my disability.

Still friends with one of my high school friends, but overall, high school was pretty negative for me. Undiagnosed developmental differences, and undiagnosed mental health issues didn't work well alongside the stresses of high school for me. I stood my ground against the bullies in the popular crowd on the first day and refused to engage in bullying against one of their targets to join their crowd, and from that moment on, became one of their primary targets. If someone gave me the opportunity to go back to that time, only knowing what I know now, I'd still refuse.

In America, our school lunches aren’t free unfortunately. Your parents have to put money in your account and each meal costs about $5-6. If your parents don’t make enough, you can apply for free lunches, however; then all you get is a PB&J sandwich and some sort of fruit. In my school there was free lunch for all kids from elementary grades and other grades if the kids are from poorer families and families with many children (we have all grades in one school building). Others bought snacks from a separate cafeteria counter. I understand younger kids needing a full meal because they burn a lot of energy but older kids just had lunch after school at home. You don't really get that hungry during classes. Also where I live we usually have schools within walking or a very short bus ride distance from home and our afterschool activities were in separate buildings unrelated to the school so we had enough time to finish classes, go home, have lunch and relax and then go to do stuff like theater or music.

My high school years: i was very lonely cause i didn't fit in.... I talked to everyone if someone hurt someone else i take place cause i dont like these types of behaviour.... I was more boy-girl i mean i was feeling better hanging out with boys.. i had a boyfriend then that eventually hurt me... We didn't have a prom... Only the greek version of Halloween party... We had mashine to buy food... I was lobe to be alone with my headphones or write my feelings or read... I had a best friend... That Hurt me too..

I remember in my freshman year, I was so nervous that my brain didn't function to look at my class schedule, and just decided to sit with our Adviser's first teaching subject. Which is not my right class and room, and for the whole day - I was marked absent on my real class, while I follow this class I started with 🤣 I met friends tho and bois 👀🧡 but on the second day, obviously, I didn't go with that class anymore. We saw each other from time to time as schoolmates until some of them became my bffs

I would catch the bus to and from school too it wasn’t long lmao like 15 mins on the bus. Walking about 30/35 mins. My mum would give me £10 for the bus and that was it. Never had no spending money to go shops nothing so that’s why I would walk home so at least I could save that money to buy snacks like the other kids

I had free school meals as my mum was on low income but school foods wasn’t that expensive. Btw I’m from the UK South Wales. It was like a voucher for £3.50 and you would buy a hot meal dessert and drink. And the food in my school was sooooooo nice like honestly you wouldn’t see many people with pack lunches. It was rare tbh. But we would actually sell our dinner tickets lmao for like £2 to the other kids and then we would sneak out of school at lunch and go to Tesco so local shops to buy sweets and stuff. Oh the memories 😂 but yeh honestly the lines for lunch was soooooo long we would have like 3 different areas for lunches and we wasn’t even a big school tbh. Probs like 400/500 people. But we would have 7/8 people at the tills serving so it was pretty quick the lines.

Only the poor kids get free lunches in the US. At least that's how it was when I was in school. One time kids were pelting me with quarters, nickels, dimes and pennies (Junior High School) while I was on the lunch line. They thought they were being mean, but I filled my pockets haha. Things could have changed though, since I am 40 now.

My high school experience was awful! I went to an all girl catholic school the school really only cared about students that would make them have a good reputation and students like me who struggled with subjects they just didn't let us do our GCSE's they kicked me out and I enrolled in college which by god was awful but thats another story. I will say that the school helped me with one thing and one thing only, they made me want to do well and prove that I am not stupid and in a month's time I will be finishing my Masters 😊

I was bullied mercilessly through elemental and middle school. In high school I went off the rails, having to take summer classes on 10th grade. By 12th grade my grades were up and I just stopped trying to make friends and let other people talk to me if they wanted. Prom night tho… one of my best nights

In my school in the southeastern US, we had to buy the food in the cafeteria if we didn’t pack, but it wasn’t super expensive (less than $10). It was free for students who were underprivileged and were elegance for reduced fee/free lunch.

Public schools in America have cafeterias but the food is not free at all schools. There are programs for lower income families to get free lunches though.

Can’t relate. Somebody got stabbed in my high school and there were multiple bomb threats one year 😬 we called our “tuck shops” canteens but I’ve heard them being called both in Melbourne. Year 10 was my only good year in high school and that’s only because I gained a tiny bit of confidence. Started dating somebody from high school but we started dating after I graduated. We’re still together 😊

in America we have to buy our lunches no matter what grade your in even in collage. i have no idea what schools give free food. my mom would have us bring a lunch instead since we cant afford to buy school lunch. one time me and my brother didnt have money for lunch and that day was pizza day but since we didnt have money we only got cheese and bread and regular milk it was a sad day.

But they had programs for families with lower income where they got reduced lunches, or free lunches. When Covid hit, they offered everyone in my area (idk if it was nationwide) free lunches.

Cute story Deli and lovely to share however in general my Australian experience was different, including the cafeteria/tuck shop situation. Also my experience of US schools was different, my daughter went to school in Tucson Arizona for about 3 yrs and she never got a free lunch!! Missed that trick !! Regardless of the country I think there is more variation from school to school or state to state than you might think. The one thing that seems universal is mean kids, that does not seem to change sadly.

Public school is free in th US from kindergarten through high school, so there aren't any fees. All you pay for really is buying your school supplies and uniform, if your school has one, and maybe fees for extracurriculars or some class trips. Everything else is funded through taxes and raising money through drives or selling things like chocolates or items off of a catalogue. School lunch fees vary from state to state, but in my state, depending on your family's income, you qualified for free, reduced, or full price for meals. I didn't go to a public high school, but in elementary/primary school, lunches wouldn't have been more than like $3 a day full price, and 50 cents for reduced lunch, and I believe that would include breakfast for free if the student chose to have it. Things may have changed since I was in school because I'm more than a decade out of middle school though.

I don't know of any public schools in my state that give free lunches unless you were part of a program for low income families. I started working young too and all my friends were at work, not at school, so I was already ready to leave as soon as my last class was over. I graduated a semester early and didn't go to my prom becuase I didn't enjoy most people at school. Looking back, I wish I would've stayed that last semester just to take culinary classes instead of starting college early, but I still don't know if I would've gone to prom.

This makes my high school experience sound so boring. My prom after party was just going to iHop with some friends and my bf but only because the friends were already going to go and they just invited me and my bf. It was fun but after prom and graduation that friendship became pretty strained.

Im Sweden the food in school is paid trough taxes. In kindergarten and until you are around 10 (at least where i lived) you get breakfast and a snack aswell. Long live the welfare! :D

I’m in the US and we had cafeterias in every school in my district - public school, and private schools had them too. (elementary, jr high, and high school.) In high school they started to have breakfast, which was mostly donuts, cereal, oatmeal, pretty simple stuff…I never ate the breakfast and almost never had the cafeteria lunch and brought my own. The food wasn’t very good. I would get it on pizza day, and it was classic US high school pizza, which is it’s own taste and creation, lol. But it was pretty good. Everyone had to pay for lunch (and breakfast when they started that) but it was very inexpensive (like, less than you would pay at McDonalds or something) for the cost of living at the time. At the beginning of the year, you could fill out paperwork for if you were low income to get free lunch and breakfast. My parents were financially fine, so I never needed that. Also, they didn’t do a good job about not having it be obvious that someone was getting free lunch, because their lunch cards were a totally different color card…and kids would get made fun of it, which was so wrong, they couldn’t help being poor…and why is that something to make fun of? We had a very diverse range of income levels in school, basically most kids were from rich families, and then maybe 15% were from poor families. We also had started desegregation in 7th grade, so I lot of kids were bussed in from poor areas. Our school district was very white, so it became more diverse, but none of us were given any education on cultural differences or respect for people who were different than us…so it didn’t help with having the different racial groups mix…which sort of defeated the purpose of desegregation…but as the years went on, it became more integrated as far as friend groups, etc, which was a good thing. I really didn’t like high school at all, lots of cliques, lots of teasing, and lots of academic pressure because it was a prep school. Anyway, HSY would be hard to play in some ways for me…and I haven’t gotten it yet because of the bugs. It is always cool to hear how school worked in other countries (like, I would have loved to have uniforms every day…no issues in picking out clothes, and maybe less issues about people getting picked on for wearing non-designer clothes, or cheaper clothes and shoes…it was pretty awful like that.) Anyway, I’m glad your HS experience was good, and that you got your scholarship for the school you wanted to go to…was it a public or private school? Do public schools charge a tuition to go? Just curious. Ours are free, and everything but school supplies and lunch was free (books, etc.) That may have changed…it’s been a long time since I was in school.

We paid for lunch when I was in school but it was really crappy quality. If you were low income you could apply for reduced or free lunch. Right now we have free lunch program that started after COVID.
