@@DarrenJohn During our empire days which lasted approximately three centuries, our ancestors who sailed the seas were greedy, invading many countries, killing many people and stealing their rich resources. Alaso, not forgetting about our cruel slavery. Maybe our comeuppance time is happening with our country going down the tube. What do you think-?

And England is going to the dogs. And you can have a much better way of life and never cold. I have live un a studio and is great for a signle guy ( maybe to small for you ) i have pool bars resturants on site i pay about 220 pound rent elec water wifi. If you are staying about Pattaya look at Jomtien 10 mins on the bus to Pattaya and has a better beach and not so busy.

Good luck Darren. I only have one request don't become one of those bitter ex-pats that you read in your comments that only seem to be able to justify their move abroad by constantly slagging off their home country to people overseas. I think it is a pecularily British thing in my experience. In country that gave them mostly a good safe start in life a free education in a country with an incredible history and culture for such a tiny little island. Just continue to be one of the positive ones.

Our education comes from the taxes that some peopl parents ,and that’s the same for the NHS.i live in Thailand 8 months and work in the uk for 4 months in the summer,I will never give up on the uk,and you are so right about the history and culture, the British man made the Morden world

Good luck with everything mate,it’s a big jump to make but it’s definitely worth giving yourself a go at a new start.I did the same 2 years ago for pretty much the same reasons as you,I jacked everything in and moved to Chiang Mai,haven’t regretted a thing so far.My health, both physical and mental has improved by leaps and bounds and I’m finally in a place where Ive been able to relax and enjoy a slower pace of life.If you want a bit of advice though I’d say don’t buy a condo in Thailand definitely rent, for at least the first few years and also think about health insurance.I know a lot of people say they “self insure” meaning they wait until they’re in hospital and then pay,all well and good if it’s minor, but if you’re in intensive care or a cardiac unit then you’re looking at 100’s of 1000’s of baht and watching your savings disappear rapidly. It doesn’t have to be expensive,I’m 59 and pay around £1000 a year for up to 10 million baht cover, definitely something to consider mate other than that, best of luck on your new life and enjoy the adventure 😊👍

Hi Darren, it seems that how your personal working situation has changed has influenced your decision to leave the country. I have always lived “ up North “ and have visited London three times. Twice on day trips from Sheffield and once for a job interview. I personally wasn’t keen on the place. Like you mentioned, like it or dislike it . I totally understand where you are coming from regarding work. I was a Department Manager in retail many years ago and faced restructuring where my job was in effect wiped out and facing the prospect of redundancy, I accepted a position with less pay in a different location in the city I was the worker in the family with a wife and two young children and lasted 18 months in this new job before I left with depression. This was twenty odd years ago and things worked out well. You make a good go of it in Thailand. Good luck my friend. I will keep following you and look forward to seeing your future ventures.

I can fully understand the reason that you are moving abroad and I don't blame you for doing it. I've read a lot of the comments that have been left on here and I agree fully with a lot of the advise that has been given regarding buying versus renting a property as well as whats been said about getting involved relationship wise whilst living out there. Please take that solid advice onboard and you will not go far wrong. We all hope you enjoy your new adventure and meet lovely people/friends however sometimes its easy make excuses for people and try justify their behaviour when infact what we should be doing is taking onboard the big red flags. Anyways go out there to enjoy and have an adventure. If you are homesick then you can always look on the internet for a job again in the UK and come back. All the best from Wales.

Hi Darren, I moved to Chiang Mai 14 months ago after 4 years in Laos and moving from Australia. It is the best move I've ever made. I'm 51 and not retired but am blessed to have a full time job here with an international company. I have a triumph T120 and the riding in the mountains and plains surrounding Chiang Mai are the best I've ever ridden and the scenery is just breathtaking. The amount of times I go around a new bend with a new viewpoint and the goosebumps that fire is countless. I hope you revisit Chiang Mai again and get on a big bike and do some touring. You won't regret it mate. Check out the famous Mae Hong Song loop.

I retired at 57 after redundancy. I was in Construction for 20 years and 16 with my last employer. Though getting interviews for full-time jobs I believe age was a factor in not actually getting those jobs. That's fair enough and acceptance of that fact made emigrating to Thailand easy for me. After 8 years in Pattaya, I have no regrets. Getting used to the heat isn't easy but you are never too far from somewhere with aircon, be it a shopping mall, a bar, cafe or restaurant. I wish you all the best. Discover the rest of S.E.Asia and beyond. Flights and hotels are so much cheaper than in the West. You will have a period of getting to grips with the red tape and culture differences but patience is the key; you will be retired and out of the rat race. Stay chilled and enjoy.
