Excellent video Becca, so informative. Thanks for posting. Have moved from watercolours to coloured pencil after 30 + years. Off to Amazon to pick up Caran d’Ache. Have been using a brush and solvent to blend my Polychromos colours, but find this lacks the control I’m after.

Hi Helen! Thanks for your lovely comment, I’m glad you enjoyed my video 🥰 I don’t use any solvents with coloured pencils, I like to use a combination of polychromos and luminance. How have you found the Caran D’ache luminance pencils? They are so good for blending and smoothing out layers, that I never feel the need to use solvent ☺️ amazing that you’re trying coloured pencils after 30+ years of watercolours! 😍

Hi Becca, What paper would you recommend practicing on, as I imagine you would go through a lot of the more expensive papers quickly just with drafts or whatever?

The Strathmore Bristol vellum paper is great for beginners, you can buy an a4 pad, and it’ll last you ages. The paper is really smooth and still super good quality, just a lot cheaper than other papers ☺️

Hi Becca, just found out about your channel today, your art is amazing! 😍 I struggle to find a good desk lamp for drawing, is there anything you can recommend? Or do you use your ring light as the only light source?

Hello! I’m so glad you found my channel 🥰 So since this video, I no longer use my ring light tripod (it broke!), so I bought a soft light tripod. This is what photographers use when doing a shoot and they’re often huge but I found one on Amazon that’s quite small and it fits nicely at the side of my desk. It’s SO bright, I couldn’t recommend it enough. What tablet do you use and what program on your tablet are you using to do your outlines?

I have the iPad Pro, and I use pro create to get the outlines 😁

what set of Faber Castell do you Recommend they do different amounts, if buying individually is there a list of what ones to get like the others you have listed ??

I’ve never bought the sets, I’ve always just bought them individually and built up my colours over the years. I’d always recommend the range of warm greys, cold greys, as they are good neutral tones than bring everything together. I always buy my pencils from ‘Jackson’s art supplies’ online, and they show you the full colour palette of polychromos. I’d start by getting a range of colours, mainly more browns if you’re going to be drawing predominantly animals, and then just build from there 🤗

I don’t use tan or grey paper often but I have done in the past. I actually started my pet portraits years ago working on tan paper. I now use extra white hot pressed Fabriano Artistico paper, or drafting film 🤗✍🏼

I have done colour pencil and made really good works but then stopped coz that was hard to blend also get the colour out of them I used to have really bad pain in my hands and shoulders 😢 However maybe it's also coz they're super cheap just 1$ for set of 12😅

They are very time consuming and it can effect your posture over time constantly looking over at the work your doing. I definitely find that a drawing board helps me! Coloured pencils aren’t for everyone but I love them!
