Here are my top regrets as a physics student. But I think it can apply to anyone in college, though, a few things are more specific to research and eventually wanting to get into grad school, which was my initial goal.

- not going to office hours
- not taking more math and CS courses
Physics does not always teach you the most actionable, useful skills. You know how to think, which is great and very appreciated, but I did struggle a bit out of school to get a job because I did not have that list of programming languages, or deep knowledge that would be needed. I wish I had spend more time in classes learning CS or continued doing Robotics.

- not taking more liberal arts philosophy courses
I never thought I’d say this. I LOVED the fact my university didn’t make me take a lot of classes like this, but because of that, I feel like I missed out on a lot of skills that helped me out later in life - writing, public speaking - because my university didn't have those classes required.

- not speaking up in class more
- trying to do more things to seem more impressive instead of getting really good at one thing
I kind of did this halfway, I did stay in my lab for 3 years and that was amazing. I’m pretty sure this was 100% the reason I won the fellowship for the year at my grad school, even though I’m also pretty sure I had the lowest GPA.
I think this applies in career too. There’s a lot of stuff you could be doing, but what is driving you and giving you value?
I think you see the conclusion here - i think a lot of this focuses on being true to yourself, in your knowledge, and what your vision is, and allowing yourself to have fun and do things truly because you want to do them. We all have to take certain courses that are awful, so there’s no reason to extend the misery outside of it, you know?

I relate to all these so much. Now I'm doing my PhD, I'm happy with being the "dumbest" in the room because if I don't ask these questions, I literally just get stuck and can't go forward. Hard to implement all these different skills but it does make a difference

@@Jon-qh8dt I agree 100%. And the ironic thing is is that the person who commented that most likely isn’t the dumbest in the room, they’re more likely to be the only person with the courage to ask. Remember he who asks a question is a fool for a minute he who doesn’t is a fool for life

To study Physics in your undergrad is hands down the greatest privilege one could afford oneself. This is coming from a guy who failed at securing a place in a graduate program, struggled to find a decent paying non teaching job in a professional culture oblivious of physics majors obviously ability to think and had to live under the shadow of friends and family beholden to the notion of success = money as an absolute truth. Life has been tough.... but smarter people have been dealt worse odds.

Nice video! I agree that it's so important to be true to yourself about what you care about and want to pursue in your studies, career and life in general. It's hard to get away from social pressures especially when you're a student but once you can hone in on your values and interests it will empower you to do things your own way 😉

The question asking part is crucial but sometimes professors in my experience have condescending attitudes towards ideas and label them as trivial.

Oh, I have similar type of regrets as you. I did not take humanity classes but I went to the library and read some literatures to balance out the nerdy subjects that I took in Computer Engineering degree curriculum. I remember I finished the Sorrow of the Young Werther by Goethe back then.

First of all what is 'Office hours'? We don't have anything like this in India. Secondly what was your PhD thesis? I want to do PhD in America... Can I get any fellowship, and what should I do for getting into research in my grad school? Third I was an extrovert but this corona came and this shut down my speaking abilities and made me an introvert.. I missed all the labs in my last two years? How can I get out of this situation?
@Noissimsarm

'Office hours' is basically an allotted timeslot which the professor is available to answer questions about the class. She didn't finish her PhD she went into industry after feeling it wasn't a good fit.

Sadly these days, if you have got the smarts, but only just barely have the ability to store knowledge, you don't stand a chance in today's schools, and life will be a bummer for you. So imagine a person who has a head injury, hence the memory problem, but at the same time finds it no more difficult than learning how to ride a bike, to do much of what Einstein did. No one will listen to such a person. However, if you are born with an incredibly gullible brain, a brain that due to lack of intelligence accepts input without ever questioning that input, that brain will suck up knowledge like a sponge, rise to the top of the class, and eventually pop out the end of university with at least one PhD. Knowledge is power these days, NOT intelligence. And that is why the videos created by myself, are ignored.
