@Bunky Bob just thinking off the top of my head, G is obviously god who sorts of fucks up after giving free will and seeing how humans behave, and allows us to fall into mankind's folly of making life, i.e. the robot wanting to become sentient. From there it might be a little iffy but my guess is that robots sort of took over or made that one guy lose his job or life or something then takes his own life. Not sure of course..

I’ve been trying to figure this out too. The best I can come up with is that the G.O.D. is a commentary/criticism AI, humans, and of the Judeo-Christian God. Sort of like humans created AI which has the potential to destroy life but AI is only able to exist because of human knowledge and is limited by human inputs which are ultimately flawed. Then this dichotomy is grafted on to God who created flawed humans (suicidal /war crazy) who then in turn create AI. Basically they are comparing the human/AI relationship to the God/human relationship to say God Is imperfect.

When they came out with their self-titled album, they had this DVD with the behind the scenes. M. Shadows mentions on their track Gunslinger (and I‘m paraphrasing), „When they reach the heavy part, I want people to feel the hairs on their arms stand“. This was the feeling for Life is but a Dream, the entirety of the album. It‘s not an album I will hear and „jam to“ for every individual track, but it‘s an album I want to hear, start to finish. As you said, I can see the love/hate towards it, but I have never felt such a rush of emotions listening to a „metal“ album. Prog album. It was like watching an orchestra. These weren‘t songs, but movements in a symphony. I told my best friend, „you‘re either gonna hate it or love it, but of you feel any extreme of the other, A7X did their job on this album“

I've been a fan of the band since City of Evil. I love this album. I feel like the people who don't like this album are the kind of people who can't sit and listen to the album front to back, or just listen on shuffle. Just listening to one random song at a time, it doesn't sound great, but as a whole, every song plays its part very well. There are a couple songs I feel can be picked out as its own separate entity. Overall it was a great and fun album, and these guys know how to make music that doesn't just have one sound, and aren't afraid to experiment.

I find it funny a lot of people disliking the production, it's my favourite part, it's been a long time since I've listened to an album by a big band that sounded so raw or without commercial music type production, samples were used only for artistic expression instead of "fixing" stuff, same with pitch correction, I think more metal and rock bands should approach this type of production, it's good musicians giving their best in the recording and not adding or fixing a bunch of stuff later.

G, Ordinary, and Death are all meant to tie together! G is coming from “God” Himself and speaking about creating mankind, Ordinary is from the perspective of a robot or AI (hence singing about wanting a soul) and Death is self explanatory. Super cool how they tied those together and told a story.

I'm still split. On one had, I'm glad they're doing what they want creatively. On the other, as a metal-head, they longer make albums that you play in your car to just straight up jam out to every song. Nightmare was probably the last album I felt like jammin' to on a drive.

I'm the same, as a mostly metal fan I loved the first half of the album, but from Easier onwards it was a bit too weird for my tastes. Other than LIBAD (the song) I only listen to Easier and onwards when I'm listening to the whole album, the rest I can listen to on their own and enjoy. 1:25 When looking at the audience rating summaries for music or movies and shows, I always ignore the 1 star and 5 stars and focus on the amount of 2, 3, and 4 stars. If there are more four stars than two stars, it's probably good. In this case, the amount of twos are slightly greater.

I really liked this album. I was a fan when The Rev was still around, the s/t album was my favourite of theirs, and Nightmare was kinda painful to listen to, but it still rocked (and also Mike Portnoy did a really nice tribute to Rev by playing his parts on the record). The albums that followed... well, I didn't care much about them, I didn't thrash them to pieces, but didn't really want to come back to them anyway. The new album is the first time I didn't even have the thought of "well, if Rev was still around...", because I feel that they've finally found their footing and carried on. All the experimentation on the album was masterfully done. For me, it's easily one of top three albums of the year so far (the others are by Depeche Mode and Katatonia). I have no idea why the fans are being cruel to the band and the album, burt frankly I don't even want to know.
@hbrandon947

It's because of their rose colored glasses. Most people do not like change and want to be fed consistency. They broke the mold on expectations and the fans in return did not like that due to their linear approach into it. I loved it (the vocoder parts could have been a bit more cleaned up) but, I'm still listening to it daily, but I'm also much older and have indulged in many bands and albums for over 20 years now and just have a different level of appreciation in general.

The fan base for this band is so cringy and delusional. The word "masterpiece" gets thrown so easily. And if you didn't like the album you either "didn't actually listen to it" or "didn't listen to it enough times". And if you tell them you did listen to it several time then "you just don't get it". These people are in massive denial and probably say the same shit to people who don't like Rick and Morty. I get called a "fake fan" by these idiots even though I've listened to them for 17 years, have all their album and a bunch of shirts but I'm not going to lie just because I like them and I'm not going to pretend this isn't their worst album and a huge downgrade from The Stage. I will say i enjoyed the first half of the album for what it is and then they just fall off after the sixth track.

You're just as cringy and delusional with your opinion. Don't be so closed minded. It's one thing if you don't like it but to say it's the worst album and a huge downgrade is just wrong. It's unlike anything else in their discography. That makes it bad? Because it's not a "metal" album? Get over yourself. There's plenty of bands making metal still. Don't hate because they wanted to do something different. They're the artists. They can do what they want. I hope they make 5 more albums like this to piss off you elitist children. What a childish thing to say that anyone that enjoys this album is lying just because you have the taste of a 14 year old scene kid.

Thing though is, a lot of parts just feel like they kind of... don't belong in those songs? It's hard to explain. I'm a huge prog guy, and BTBAM is a top 5 band of all time for me. Somehow I find bands like BTBAM to be coherent in their chaos, but here sometimes things felt like they didn't go well together, to put it as simply as possible. The community seems split between calling it a 'masterpiece' and hating it. I can take-or-leave their old stuff, loved 'The Stage', and am perplexed by this one. They went for a BTBAM approach of incorporating multiple genres and some kind of concept, but without the compositional skill and finesse of that band. It's a disappointment, because I wanted them to evolve on the brilliant template they discovered on 'The Stage'. That album was a little out-there, but still melodic and cohesive. This new album essentially abandons their core sound around the halfway mark, which makes it feel unfocussed and anti-climactic rather than progressive. Listen to 'Colours II' for an example of unhinged, genre-hopping weirdness done well.

A7X has personally been influenced by Mr. Bungle, Dream Theater, Steven Wilson, and a ton of other proggier acts. A7X was my first metal band that I REALLY got into, listening to whole albums for the first time and that was my eventual gateway into prog metal. The only complaint I have is that I think damn near every song could use an extra 1.5-2 minutes to let the themes expand a bit. I love the rule breaking transitions, but with 3-4 minute track times, I really think they left so many chances to let tension build just a few more measures to get those emotional climaxes and releases that Opeth, Porcupine Tree, and all the other consistent prog heavy hitters do.

And I think cosmic proves my point. The tension built in that track is absolutely gripping, but it’s almost 2x as long as most of the other, more avante garde tracks.

This album wasn't what I was looking for, but there are some really interesting parts. To me, those parts didn't string together well enough. Album isn't for me but I can see why people love it, and that's okay! Art is subjective.

Most concept albums are hard for people to take in. Most do not sit around and vibe to a whole album in one sitting

I can't say I love the album really, there are some nice songs but the excessive over tune usage is killing me, if I would've heard easier without knowing it's a7x, I would've closeג it after 3 seconds, over tune is really not my style and I really dislike it. I think it could've been a cool usage occasionally, but it's like literally anywhere throughout the whole album, and I'm a bit disappointed with that, especially since the music itself is SO good.

This album is definitely "different". For me as a long time Avenged fan, I was not really digging this one. It is most assuredly artistic and no way to deny their talent. They really pushed the envelope on this one, but it was just a little "strange" for me. I never really found a good groove with any of the tracks. Work all that, I'm still a fan, I still support them, and will continue to listen to anything they put out.

A7X gave us a fantastic, and challenging new album. It is refreshing to hear an album that can stand out in a sea of generic cookie cutter metal plaguing today's scene.

A concept album.... Am I dreaming? This is on the same page as THE WALL? Humans... Meh. Most like anything and that's why there is radio and reality TV.

I find the album had interesting ideas. Both on the metal front and the... Misc front. But its joined togheter rather incompetently. The songs struggle to have an identity of their own so the album as whole is kindof a fustercluck

I really like this album although it does have some glaring weaknesses such as the production and mixing.

The production and mixing is intentional though, they intentionally made sure you hear all the little imperfections you naturally hear when someone plays live, it was a conscious decision not a mistake.

@@RIPJimmyA7X I think they’re the result of the band having too many ideas and not listening to their producer. Has to be the worst sounding album Andy Wallace and Evil Joe have been involved in in years. These human imperfections you talk about don’t make any sense when it comes to some of these really unnecessary production and mixing choices.

The Mix is the only problem I had a issue with. The engineer should be scolded for the vocals and guitars being overshadowed by Synth, Strings and other Effects. Love the album though 8/10 very very refreshing and new feeling!!!

Not my favorite record from them but it’s definitely a good one and incredibly unique, a metal band their size has never put out such an out there album that has absolutely no commercial appeal. Greatly respect them for this album because they’re just making whatever the fuck they won’t even if it won’t sell well and that’s awesome and I really respect it. A7X rules and the people who try to act like this is a bad album just because it’s not for them are trippin.
