"I'm planning on over-engineering it from the get-go." MY MAN! Woodworking, as in life, is never about arriving at some perfect mythical destination, but about relishing the journey.

Awesome example of prototyping! Making errors, is just part of the journey. The trick is to learn how and why those errors happened, and how can we make improvements!

As commented below 'Glued the router to the shelf' is comedy genius 😀. I think the 'no space for the battery' is a great idea. I won't be making one of your router shelves as I'm so scared of my router, I'll just be holding it until it stops. Great video Mark, thanks.

Nice router station and a good idea! Shop furniture and jigs don't have to be perfect, just functional. Also, it's smart to respect the tools and even be a little nervous when using anything that can remove a finger or three, no matter how experienced someone might be.

I'd imagine swapping the wheel that lowers/raises with the platform would be what I would do, but only after seeing your example. It's great that you show the errors and mistakes, allowing others to improve on your design and thought.

My only trim router is a DeWalt brushless and it's my newest, all that to say it's an instant stop router, love that bit about it. I think your attitude of looking at everything as an experiment is how you win whether or not your video well received!

As with everything you do I love it! I might even end up having a go at making one. Got to finish about a bajillion other projects first though. I love that you share the whole thought process throughout your builds and show all your mistakes so that we can learn from them too!!! Keep being amazing! 🤗🤗🤗

Great idea and good functioning build. I agree with you, it doesn't have to be perfect, unless it is furniture or a gift. At the beginning, I was coming up with a lot of "But what about....." questions. (it's just something I do. "Just watch the danged video Paul!!!!!" "Weeeelll, all right.") So, I watched the video and you answered all of them. 👍👍👍 😁✌🖖

Mark, believe me, at my age, there is no chance of hitting that dog hole while the bit is spinning. It seems that I cut most wood two times, and it's still too short. This is very clever. Good on you! I wish I weren't so cheap because those Amana counter sinks are brilliant. Mark you've got to tell me what your full time occupation is because it seems to me that you have engineering tendencies; or your a technical instructor. Well, whatever it is, you are, obviously very successful at it.

Nice solution. Some more 'over-engineering': on that screw (or next to it), put some depth-indicators (for most-used depths) - no more calliper needed. More 'importantly', I would add some counter-nut to fix the cap - using different router-bits, you retain the exact same depth. And I like that workbench-cleat - keeps your table clean!
@startmaking1

Love the idea. Really clever thank you. That bench cleat may just be the simplest and best addition of all tbh. Funny how that happens.

I like how you developed your own style cutting and glueing in an extra bit. Really helps brand recognition. Maybe can stain it differently or sign it to help it stand out and make it really pop. 😂 *jk, thx for making mistakes so I don't have to, even though I still will ...

That's a great idea. I have a Bosch ae1200 router and accurately locking off the plunge depth is a real pain so I will be making something similar for it as soon as I have the workshop time to do it. I am thinking to add a lock bolt for the cap so that it wont move accidentally.

My router stops immediately (dewalt) so this isn't an issue for me. I have however been thinking of a way to store said router and plunge base on my french cleat wall. I feel a little project coming on, thanks for the idea Mark 👍👍

I solved this problem, completely by accident, I bought a router that stops immediately when it’s switched off and I only bought that particular one because it was on the battery platform I used.

@ “that moment when you stop the router and it takes an age to slow down” is the first sentence in the video. He’s clearly taken it a step further but that was the fundamental problem, which, as I stated, I solved by accident.

People have made similar caddies for router planes. They usually look like an auxiliary base but are just a mitered box with a stage to raise it and let the cutter hang. Can be for the workbench or in a wall cabinet.
