Hi Marko! Great video! I've always been interested in the cost of living and salaries for other countries. The salary comparisons between Norway and the USA is not as drastic as I thought it would be. The Bay Area of California is not a good representation of software developer salaries for the other parts of the USA. However, what was very surprising is the cost of purchasing real estate. In metro Atlanta, Georgia area $850k will buy a large well appointed home. What is extremely expensive in the USA is healthcare. A typical doctor visit for a minor issue can easily exceed $500, not including any prescriptions. The cost of education is also extremely expensive in the USA. How can people afford to purchase real estate in Norway? What are the typical mortgage terms (20, 30-years or more?)

I'm from Norway myself so I think I'm qualified to comment. The 850k apartment he showed was pretty expensive, even by Norwegian standards. You can get an alright apartment for 400k-ish, just not in the center. Most people can't really afford to buy real estate here, so they are neck-deep in loans. Most Norwegians take out a 30-year loan to buy their first house/apartment which is usually 250-300k in the Oslo region.

Compare health insurance cost, compare safety - safety of employment, or even general safety, compare labour laws (or lack thereof in case of USA), compare how much holidays you're getting, etc... It would make more sense to compare cost of living in other European countries as they have similar laws/living standards, rather than corporation ruled third world country like USA.

Greetings from Italy (and from another Marco)! I don't know if also in Norway the last three years made salaries grow a little more thanks to the opportunities of remote working (not only from abroad companies but also from Norway); here in Italy salaries in IT market have grown a bit, even though the mean salary here for a software developer is quite low than the rest of Europe (30-45k€, for a senior role is quite rare to have more than 60k€, excluding big tech companies). Yes, inflation than made this salary growth ininfluent, but that's life... :D

I also live in Italy, and I can confirm, the salaries here are laughable. Thankfully I’m also a US citizen, so it’s relatively easy to work for US companies remotely…If I had to work for an Italian company I’d move out of the country…There’s no way to live comfortably with these wages

Switzerland here, salaries for Software engineers average 100k to 120k CHF ($110k-$132k) a year, of course with more experience theres room for higher salaries. Living expenses, especially in cities are higher though. But compared to other countries you still have more income after living expenses and food that you can spend as you wish.

In Macedonia (I guess in Serbia it is close) the salaries are not that big, for example average it is from 800 EUR - 3000 EUR per month depends on a experience but the expenses are very low.. The only expensive thing is the food and maybe bills but still after I compare to Norway if you get here at least 1500 EUR you are financial free when it comes to personal things you can live however you like here :)

What about taxes? Is the pay 850k after or before tax? If you're paying 30% taxes or more on that money, it changes the perspective a lot. Do the rents and apartment prices include any taxes you have to pay?

Salary for devs is like twice as lower (if I got you right and 800k of krones/year it’s a 80k of usd/year) than in your example in Russia (Saint-Petersburg), but the rent is 300-500 usd for 1-2 beds apartments in good areas not far from center.

wow I expected higher salaries in Norway. I live in Czech republic and Senior dev engineering salaries are +- same but we have much lower cost of living here. But property prices are also very high and interest rates - 6.2%

Very low interests for more than 10 years people overspend too much while having shitloads of mortgage, very high net worth taxes drives all these paper multimillionaires/billionaires out of the country reducing their overall tax to the state itself, not so much to invest in other than oil or fish industries aaand combine all that with inflation is enough to make NOK more and more worthless.

nice video! It's just very different the pay range of Europe countries from here in Brazil. For an example, the pay range from a Senior Software Engineer in Brazil is between 25k~30k dolars an year hahah. Things like this make me want to starting working remote to another countries

Hey that’s a great question! I guess for a sysadmin if you are working for a industry company they probably speak in Norwegian, but if it’s just a software company, it’s likely they speak in English. For example at my day job, we speak in English 😃

Regarding the country and payment. All are aligned with the cost of living. Back in the day, you get saved approximately the same amount at the end in every country. It's just a matter of the rent costs, grocery expenses, etc, etc. Therefore it's not objective enough to choose/compare countries just because an average payment is higher... You have as pricy expenses... There are many more important matters to consider when moving to another country. That's why I can't really understand these lists aka "The best country for software engineers in terms of the compensation"...

I don't understand the issue. The salaries in the US are huge compared to Europe. But still Europeans end up better if you take the salary-cost of life ratio. So basically the huge difference in favor of the Americans, still falls short to the amount of money you have left after you finish the costs in Europe.

To be honest, main goal for me is to maximize compensation. Thanks for this info, very interesting. You didn't mention the personal income tax rate though (or maybe I just missed it?) which is a very important piece of the puzzle - earning 75K NOK per month may sound good but what you take home is what really matters (just trying to work out the math in my head here by deducting the rent and other expenses to see what the disposable income level would be). Last time I checked Norway did have rather lowish income taxes compared to the other Nordics, especially DK but I' not really sure about that. In Finland you'd be very lucky to earn that 850K annual salary as a staff software engineer - this is more on the level of those consultancy companies you mentioned. And 10 years ain't senior level - I've been writing code for a living for almost 25 years :D. Taxation is also heavy, although prices of things aren't yet as insane as in Norway... PS. I always thought you were a Finnish expat judging from your first name but guess not :)

I also wondered that, seems that at 850k the tax rate is about 30% in norway. It's a pretty decent tax rate but it does change the perspective a lot. In Romania you could be better off with a lower net pay (not by much, but you could also earn more with 10-25y xp) because rents here are much lower, they range from 200-800EUR in Bucharest/Cluj for simple apartments. Of course Romania is not Norway, the social services/infrastructure are leagues apart.

Hey thanks 😃 Hey good question! I used a number of different machines, on all operating systems, Win, Mac and Linux. But over time I settled on the Mac because of the hardware and build quality. 😃

Hi, it depends where you are.. are you a recent graduate or an experienced hire? Then how much experience and where do you live. The basic requirements are to have a list of projects, such as a portfolio demonstrating your experience and capabilities. When you get to the interviews, always ask for feedback even if you know you did well or didn't. A million rejections are just a million ways to improve. It's pretty silly, maybe, but welcome each rejection as a way to improve. Compensate for the frustration by balancing your days. Exercise, a good diet, study times and good sleep all help out.

@@embracem7722 I'm graduating in a month, with a bit over a year in experience. I love in Nigeria, there are jobs here, but most tend towards senior roles. So I ventured out into fully remote jobs. I have built a portfolio, working on more projects to show case my skills, thank you for that tip! Highly noted! Ahh this should be on a shirt😂, love the quote. Really though, thank you. Hey guys thanks for the comments! When I look at the candidates we hired, a lot of them had a project or 2 to show that they worked on in their free time. That’s the best way to prepare for the interview, if you are just starting out, and you have no work experience

@vloginnwithekom I want to add; showing willingness to learn continuously, demonstrating 'thirst' for knowledge help out too. Read around trending and emerging topics in the field and come prepared to those interviews. Meeting their requirements is just the minimum - it's no longer enough - you must bring added value to that company you're going to. Knowledge is usually the most attractive quality aside from technical skills. Knowledge can be shared and grown to other individuals. You're absolutely welcome. I understand your struggles. I graduated in 2019 and covid hit. I couldn't find a job for almost 2-3 years. But I quietly worked on projects (mostly small, but it accumulates) and developing other facets of myself. I failed many interviews but started to pass a few, chose to reject those because you learn what you want from a company. Also, don't show any sign of desperation. Make it look like you have other options to them, this makes you attractive. (It's a bit like dating in that aspect)
