Wow, Awesome camera and great video. I had the HPI savage once and it is a good truck, but 1st thing upgrade would be shocks, go to the titanium shock shafts and keep screws loose on the connection points of shocks to frame, helps prevent breakage of shocks. Good luck with your hobby, again great video, very exciting area for RC

What a beautiful meet, the beauty of the desert and this western technology... Reminds me all the chances we lost.

It will soon be (20 or 30 years). But perhaps more a countryside than a wasteland. Perhaps...

the engine is too lean, i can tell by the sound and the amount of smoke being released, BY too lean i mean that by the temperature of the weather as well because the engine will overheat quickly

One more thing which you may have already figured out don't keep glow starter on so long, once started you want to take off to prevent damage to engine, the glow plug on a nitro engine works as a sparkplug and the timing, if you keep glow plug on constantly while running it can cause damage, great plug for that engine is the Mach #8, good luck

Dude- I hate to dissent on a fellow basher, but, just so you know, are mostly if not all wrong. a glow plug remains glowing, causing combustion at a certain pressure. Spark plugs are the opposite, as they rely on a timing algorithm. O.S. #8 are great. also- 27 seconds with a glow igniter is fine once and a while, probably more often than you expect, won't damage engine.

I appreciate the info, but my knowledge comes from the book Tuning/understanding Nitro Engines . I have trusted this book and used it for reference over 13 years now. I understand what a glow plug is, I know it does not use an electrical ignition system. My point was the glow plug on a nitro engine unlike a glow plug on a diesel engine does act like the timing on an nitro engine, we are talking millions of second obviously but it does, for nothing keeps it glowing other than the fuel combusting inside the cylinder. When you understand that then it does make since the type of a plug you use, most if not all hot plugs have a smaller spiraled wire inside the plug that gets hot, the colder plugs have a thicker wire. Hence which one do you think stays hotter longer, the hot plug, so that time deference is like a timing system. Very interesting stuff, knowledge is power.

+donald samek What your saying is true, but what you probably didn't know about is what we have used for years with RC planes. An idler pack glow heater. An on-board glow ignition system that you can mix in with your throttle position. That allows the heat to come in with anything less than a predetermined setting. Say 5% throttle for example. This advances your timing and keeps things more reliable during low speed running, which is the most critical point of fluctuation that can lead to unexpected flame outs. This is little more than an annoyance for ground based vehicles, but in certain situations (take off/3D harriers) that can spell certain death for a model plane. To help further the technology, I am currently attempting to develop a resonance meter/sensor to seat against any nitro motor block. By doing this, I should be able to record internal tonal shifts throughout the RPM band that will directly talk to an on-board sensor for high response/high resolution needle and plug tendering via an electronic (AVR) automatic variable regulator, that will be able to send over 1000 steps of regulated current to the plug. This will eliminate the issue with full on or off voltages and provide an ideal tune no matter the variances of RPM, also negating ambient weather, and/or things like plug condition or fuel line pressure shifts. That tied in conjunction with a tiny linear stepper motor for the same sort of needle adjustment would nearly wipe out miss-tuning, which would make start ups and over all running much much more reliable. With the addition of a kill switch "needle close" function and a resistance measurement report (to keep an eye on the plugs health), it would truly revolutionize the way nitro motors function, making it far easier for a beginner to deal with function.

Seems like a lot of technology just for a rc vehicle. Planes are cool but not my cup a tea. Which lately no RC vehicle has been, too busy with work and family. Anyways just food for thought, sometimes too much is just what it is. I owned the Losi Monster truck and installed the 454 by Losi. I had that engine for over 4 years and still ran great after I sold it. It's all about the break-in. I ran that beast every weekend, kinda miss it but that's life I guess. Hey man good luck with the engineering. Seems purty cool.

Also now that I am thinking about it.....a couple steps to follow. 1st break-in can be done on a stand with 3 steps, 1st step...take out glow plug and hook up fuel line with fuel you plan on using, then turn over slowly with drill or some method of rotation. Do this for about 10 to 15 minutes...2nd, take apart and clean then put back on stand and actually start this time and let idle for 10 to 15 minutes....3rd, take apart and clean...now install on vehicle. This is the important part always tune high speed 1st, your low speed needle if you have one should be done last. This part must be done everytime you either change gear ratio or fuel. I recommend never changing fuel but whatever. It doesn't take long to set up top speed needle, keep leaning out until you don't see anymore smoke then turn back towards rich 1/8th of a turn. Now run full speed then bring it back to you and with a temp gun tune low speed until temp stables out, if it begins to get hotter then your too lean, if it gets cooler then your too rich..you want it to hold its temp...no change. Now finish your break-in by going up and down the street or where ever you are fluctuating the throttle gradually. Do this roughly 10 to 15 minutes..and now clean again. This time be sure to mark the flywheel where you will know where the piston sits at it's lowest point. This will prolong the life of the engine, also if you put up for the winter be sure to take engine off and clean then keep submerged in oil, I used motor oil. This keeps it from building up corrosion. Then after winter just clean it then reinstall. Too easy. You know technology can only help so much, the problem in most situations is the lack of dedication to something. Too many distractions in people's lives nowadays. Man those were fun days, might just have to build me one again. The funny part is I believe I got just as much pleasure working on my vehicles. I always triedto use the coldest plug I could. They always seemed better to me. Shimming the head can help with power...lets see, shorter or longer exhaust can help with power, shorter=Torq and longer more speed.. I might have that backwards but you could easly look it up. Anyways to all I hope you the best of luck.

lol. Some people think its running lean. You obviously cant tell by sound considering your hearing it through a camera. Its running perfect. I can tell because it changes to second nicely & early like they do when its properly tuned
