Heey man, nice job! I just started learning a few weeks ago too... That chord you are trying to move is movable, but you need to do what is called a "bar chord" which is pressing all the keys with your index finger and using the rest of the fingers to do the chord pattern. I think that's why your teacher told you to avoid using your index finger to do the chord. However those bar chords are difficult to do, they say it can take months to learn them well. Good job brother!!! I’ve been playing for almost 30 years and I am just now trying to get used to playing the G chord like that. Keep on playing brother
