Meet Lauren Bateman, a guitar teacher who believes in simplifying the learning process so you can have fun faster on the guitar! Starting from scratch? No problem! Lauren begins by demonstrating how to hold your guitar comfortably, whether it's acoustic or electric. With clear instructions and helpful tips, she ensures that even absolute beginners can follow along effortlessly.
But Lauren doesn't stop there. She dives into the basics of fretting, showing you the proper technique to produce clean notes without straining your fingers. Plus, she shares valuable insights on tuning your guitar accurately using a clip-on tuner, ensuring your instrument sounds its best every time you play.
Once you've mastered the essentials, Lauren guides you through your first two chords: E minor and a simplified version of the C chord. With her patient and encouraging approach, she breaks down each chord step by step, making it easy for beginners to grasp.
But the real fun begins when Lauren teaches you how to strum! She introduces a simple strumming pattern that complements your chord changes, allowing you to play along with ease. And before you know it, you're ready to tackle your first two songs: "Horse With No Name" by America and "Eleanor Rigby" by The Beatles.
With Lauren's guidance, you'll feel empowered to embark on your guitar journey with confidence. Whether you're a seasoned musician or a complete novice, this lesson is designed to help you unlock your musical potential and start playing real songs in just 30 minutes!

I'm a 79 year old retiree and recently bought my first guitar. I always wanted to learn how to play one but felt hampered because of having rather short fingers, my middle finger on either hand is right 3 and 7/8 inches in length, I was told by the widow of a farmer class mate who run a music store for years that it shouldn't make any difference so after all these years I bought my 1st guitar. I started watching different y-tube videos and found that Lauren Bateman seems the best for beginners. My tastes learn towards older country and Southern Gospel style of music.

Hi Lauren! No laughing please, but how do you get guitar picks out from inside the acoustic guitar body? I finally got mine out by rolling a piece of tape into a ring with the sticky side out, and sticking it onto the end of a pencil. I then could put the end of the pencil with tape on it into the sound hole, stick it onto the picks and pull them out. Whew!
@LaurenBateman
@LaurenBateman 5 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching! That is a good method and a lot of students are doing that. One way is to shake your guitar until the pick is positioned at the middle of the sound hole. Then you flip your guitar as fast as you can and the pick will eventually drop at the sound hole. As we say, practice make progress.

For using the tuner .. tell everyone to be on the chromatic (C) mode. I know YOU know this, but if beginners have a multi-purpose tuner they might have a problem. If they are in the Guitar mode (usually G on the tuner) you have to be close to the note to start. Best to start on the chromatic (C) mode. I know you know this 'cause you rock (I love your channel and subscribe). Thanks for your videos!! Fortunately, most tuners turn on in the "C" mode> Guessing A Horse with No Name? Great song!!

I've been working on my guitar playing for 1.5 months now. Got my calluses developed, know most of the basic open chords, my strumming is coming along okay considering I don't use a pic. I have plenty of songs to practice. But I CANNOT manage to control my finger picking, keeping it steady thru a song! It is very frustrating. I suspect I'm still not changing chords fast enough so as to be able to maintain notes going from one chord to the next. I pluck strings without any discernable pattern. Frustrating. 😢 Sorry. I just had to vent. But any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for the response Lauren. After I posted here, I scrolled thru your videos. I figured you HAD to have some finger picking videos some place. 😏 Sure enough, I watched your 'Dust in the Wind' and found the one about generalized picking. Guess it's time for more practice. 😁 I'm retired so I have plenty of time.

People are able to move their hands and fingers in ways that other people will never be able to do no matter how much practice and that's why some people progress and some people don't and never will. Playing guitar mostly comes down to your anatomy and it's not fair. I can't even get my picking hand parallel to the strings and end up scraping the pick toward the bridge when it should be going down towards the ground and I've been playing for years. I hate seeing people making progress when I can't because I wasn't born with special muscles and tendons in order to do it. Getting better at guitar is a myth. Some people's hands and fingers will never be able to do this and thats something giutar teachers never tell you but I wouldn't expect them to know about anatomy. I've studied anatomy
