Bloody excellent. I have always used the high-pass filter to sharpen globally. I have never used, or thought to use, targeting or zoning to sharpen individual element layers. Typically I have sharpened as: shift+Ctl+U then Linear light, then High-pass, then Black Mask, then paint white to select where sharpening wanted. From now on though, I'm goign to use your sharpening method. So much better. Cheers!

@@jethrostebbings Regarding editing other people's images: Are you still looking for images to edit? If so, I could provide some RAW files. It would be interesting to get a different perspective with regards to editing them. Cheers :)

I am a very advanced PS user. Teach now and then. Always looking for new ways to do things. This idea of sharpening at different layers in the image is brilliant. Gonna start following you and stealing your stuff now and then. :-) I would leave you a tip but my bank just informed me that someone used my card number and they are issuing a new card. So next time. Promise

Awesome techniques, thank you! I don't have Photoshop, but I was able to replicate this in Affinity Photo and even in Darktable, taking away the need to go into Affinity Photo in the first place.

I still believe High Pass is extreme for sharpening, but I liked the techniques you use afterwards. For sure I will try to some of my images to see how it goes. Thanks.

Always good to try things out again with a different mind set! high pass isn't my only method either - well - Modern cameras and lenses are so sharp as it is that any sharpening is something that needs heavy deliberation in itself. good luck and thanks for the watching and commenting!

Very interesting. Hard to see in the video but I’m surprised you aren’t introducing halos since your high pass settings are very extreme.

Thank you! Im really happy with unveiling this method as almost all KZbinrs and landscape edting courses never talk about this - instead they worry about avoiding the issue in detriment to how far you can actually go in your editing! I will work on getting better A/B results in the future though! Have a great time editing!

@@jethrostebbings Absolutely - I had seen a couple of videos about doing something similar in Lightroom using the dehaze slider. That is, using masks to limit dehaze to areas of the image that are closer and leaving the haze in the background. But LR masking is sometimes so imprecise, and I like to do all final edits and cleanup in PS. This is very useful for implementing the dehaze concept with sharpening, and I'll definitely be trying it. Great stuff, already subscribed and looking forward to more.

Thanks, Jethro! I'm going to try this for myself. As others have said, the video doesn't let us see the pop you've added. A download link for the actual .psd file would be nice. Also, I noticed that all the links for your gear lead to the same Amazon listing for a D850. Thanks again! I'll be checking out your other videos later in the day.

If you apply the high pass filter to each individual layers by brushing on a mask, why do you have the artifacts on the edges? I don’t get it. Can you explain, pls? Also by converting each layers to a smart object, you can come back to the high pass filter and adjust if need be
@jethrostebbings
@jethrostebbings 11 ай бұрын
Hi there, well, when you brush in the sharpened layer via the mask, you might go over the edges unless you are very accurate and stop long before the dark or white haloing - but I find it quicker to just run along the edges with the mask.

The only issue with that is that I have 4 more videos left to provide absoslutey new concepts but thats about it. Ha ha. Not a good content model at all :) Glad you liked the video though, Hope it helps with your editing!
