Hi, Memo! This is Alex, from Kiev. Thank you for this video. It is always exciting to hear someone talk about the plants they like (or not) and the reasons why. It helps. I tend to like most plants I see and desire to collect at least a quarter of them all (in my head). But in reality, it is a delicate process of building a collection that fits you. When the whole world, more or less, goes in the direction of getting the plants they see on instagram... What I do in my collecting (conscious or unconscious) is go from the opposite direction, from a certain list of plants that surround me, when I was growing up. It is not the plant's fault, but some plants have a strong USSR vibe for me. They were in all the schools, hospitals, households... Surrounded by poor Soviet aesthetics, they were supposed to make it all look better, but they had no chance. No matter how much I like the euphorbias in general, I hate the Milli one and the Trigona. Even I understand they are nice, still... It must be a trauma of mine. For a long time, I was sure that I didn't like plants at all. But It was just that list of plants. Medenila is amazing. I love the leaves. I have a good chance of buying it for a good price right now; it probably won't happen, because of the size. Just yesterday, I saw the Shizmatoglotis for the first time in my life. It was in a perfect state and much more beautiful in person, but again, the size. If I have room just for Anthurium or Shizi, Anthurium wins. I would be happy if you read the long comment about my entire collection I wrote for you after the previous video. I believe I tagged you. In English all the plants names (and nouns) are gender-neutral, in Russian or Ukrainian all nouns got gender for no logical but just grammar reason. It makes us Russian or Ukrainian speaking plant collectors to discuss a lot a "gender vibes" we can sense from some plant types. As an example by the grammar: ficuses, crotons, ferns (fern is a "girl" in Ukrainian), philodendrons, cactuses are "boys" and orchids, begonias, violets, monsteras, palms, peperomias are "girls". I can say that, from what I can feel, for some plants it fits, for some not. Some of my plants are "boys" some are definitely "girls" and some like alocasias I just can't read, may be the neutral. Is that something like that in Greek language? Did you ever consider some "female" or "male" energy from a plant, or it's just our language-inspired imagination? Thank you. 🤩
@Houseplantygoodness8 ай бұрын
Hi Alex, 👋👋👋 nice to see you here again! It's always a pleasure to connect with fellow plant enthusiasts from around the globe. 🌍 Your thoughtful comment really resonates with me. The personal journey of building a plant collection is indeed a delicate and deeply personal one. It's fascinating how our experiences and cultural backgrounds shape our perception and appreciation of different plants. Your approach to plant collecting, driven by the influences of your childhood surroundings in the USSR, is truly unique. It's a poignant reminder of how our environment and the plants within it can evoke strong emotions and memories, sometimes even subconsciously. The way certain plants remind you of the Soviet era and how that impacts your feelings towards them is a perfect example of this complex relationship we have with plants. It's interesting how some plants can bring a sense of nostalgia, while others might bring less positive associations. Regarding the gender perception of plants, that's an intriguing aspect of language and culture. In Greek, like in many languages, nouns have genders, and this can sometimes extend to plants. However, it's less about the inherent 'energy' of the plant and more about the grammatical structure of the language. It's fascinating to hear how in Ukrainian and Russian, certain plants are considered 'boys' or 'girls', and how this influences your perception of them. In Greek, we might not necessarily assign a 'male' or 'female' energy to a plant based on its gender in language, but it's an interesting concept to ponder. Your comment about the Medinilla and Schismatoglottis, and the practical considerations of space and care, is a common dilemma for many plant lovers. Often, we have to make tough choices about which plants to bring into our lives, especially when space is a limiting factor. It's all about finding that balance and making sure each plant in your collection brings you joy and fits into your lifestyle. I'll definitely look back for your previous comment about your plant collection. It's always enriching to hear about other people's plant journeys and the personal stories behind their collections. Apologies if I missed it, I am usually only around the first 24-48 hours in the comments on my videos Thank you for sharing your experiences and perspectives, Alex. It adds a rich layer of understanding to the world of plant collecting and how it intersects with our personal histories and cultural backgrounds. Keep nurturing your passion for plants, and I hope you continue to find joy and fulfillment in your ever-evolving collection. 🌿🌱🌺🤩

@@Houseplantygoodness Thank you for such a fast and detailed answer; it means a lot to me today. After this comment of yours, I finally understood what I like about your channel so much: the things you see and share about the plants, that only Memo can see and show me. I believe that if someone does something and puts his heart into it, he deserves to know that there are always people who value their effort, and I found myself to be one of those people for you. And also the positive fact that you don't play the absolute "do it this way only" expert. In Russian language plant tube I had too much of that. When I subscribed, I absolutely didn't expect you to communicate with us somehow, especially on this level of reading and writing such long comments. In fact, I wasn't growing up in the USSR, but just right after the monster died. And we had no plants at our home till I turned 30 or 31. But one nostalgia story with a plant I also have. I love it when you tell us about plants in (or from) your parents' house. When I was 5, I visited my great-grandparents' house before It was sold. And there were really a limited number of things in there. That was the way they lived. My great-grandmother had only two or three dresses that left in the wooden wardrobe, which (the wardrobe) my great-grandfather made by his own hands (because you couldn't just bye a wardrobe in USSR if you were unprivileged). By the way, my great-grandparents were Greek. The rooms of the house had such small windows that it was quite dark. And there was a ruber ficus in a wooden barrel. From what I can tell now, at least it was 15 years old. It was the first ficus plant I saw in my 5 years of life. A magic tree it was. Be sure it was planted in garden black soil may be with some sand edded with no drenage (as all was done in that time) How has it survived there? I asked my mom if her granddad did something to it in summer, moved it outdoors? And she said that nobody moved it from that room as she can tell. So, after I established my collection of cacti, I bought myself the Abijan ficus. And felt in love with it from the moment I touched it. Now I have 14 ficus varieties. And I would love to have a few more. I love the energy of ficus plants. The first video of yours I've seen was about Umbelata. I bought a top cutting (mine is not Everest, but the Umbelata) and it's doing well for me. About 20 sm high got 3 big leaves finally no brown spots. Off course, I don't mean that the language gender of the plants is some kind of truth. But the fact that we have it made us think on a subject that some plants got boyish or girly vibes. It is hard to see a cactus as "a girl" or a violet as a "boy", especially when there are a lot of them collected together.. When I feel a need to buy a plant, and it is not about a good deal (which is true collectors greed mixed with curiosity), I tend to chose plants almost from a mystical sight. I feel like I need more female or male energy in my space. And I didn't tell it to almost no one before, but from plant to plant I change, or at least have a chance to transform myself, to pick some vibe and grow it in me when I need it. I believe that it's got to be an ancient type of magical activity. And I don't look for magic or mystics as a theory or culture but appreciate a lot when they happen in reality. But beyond that, I just sometimes buy plants like crazy. And I need to buy one or two right now 🤣 had a few bad days. But it's -10❄☃

I have 5 crown of thorns including a variegated one. They can handle full sun. All of mine live in full sun here in Texas and we get up to 107F. I do have a Rhaphidophora decursiva. I’ve seen on some sites that it is a crawler, although most say climber, and mine did seem to want to crawl. I did force mine onto a pole. It grows very well during the summer as you said. I really like the plant.

I’ve got a rhaphidophora decursiva. My first one died of root rot. I combined a couple of young plants into one pot, which seems to be doing well. It is currently growing like a crawler. It has only just started getting mature leaves but it is at the edge of the pot. I’ve got it in a chunky aroid mix, in a Lechuza cube self-watering pot with a wick in the bottom. It has a reservoir so it never dries out completely, but it also mostly gets watered from the bottom. I’ll probably put a moss pole in when I do the next pot up. It is a slow grower.

Not a cactus fan. I do have a sharoniae. It was gifted to me maybe 3 years ago as a tiny 1-leaf cutting. It's grown to almost the size of yours, but "recently" (after summer), I had to cut it - but I didn't do it until November. It's propagating away as single node cuttings, and it's taking its sweet time... But I am no rush. Moss poles... Just ordered 120 Liters of tree fern bark. Gonna experiment with that. My decursiva is such an easy one. But quick to throw runners, too. I chop it all the time. :D Doesn't bother the plant. Growing nicely. Lovely video, Memo.

I actually have raphidophora decursive. (Was lucky to find a pretty mature one in local store) Mine has leaves probably 3 times bigger. To me as a newbie aroid fan: grows superfast, like I cannot belive it. Monstera (I thought it was a type of monstera btw) is slower. I noticed it needs to fatten the stem to grow bigger leaves. So I'm trying to attach it to a tall and fat bamboo cane. I also dicided to feed it like my other heavy feeders. No complains made by the plant. In winter it stopped and I dont water untill I see her leaves to show me if it needs water. After orchids...super easy plant. 😂 I hope I will not have to have a moss poll.

I managed to kill a medenilla twice:( but maybe I will try it one more time. I got a raphidophora decursiva cutting 2 month ago, and it is doing well. Great roots so far, fuzzy and chunky, almost anturium vibes, it loves the heat mat for rooting and a coarse aroid mix with self watering wicks and water reservoire seems to work fine. It is growing the first leaf, I will also say it is slower as other aroids I have, but I see some progress and it makes me happy:), love the leaf shape of this raphidophora.

I've managed to root rot 3 of them, once I've gotten it from the store in the next 1-2 days it started dropping flower buds, which by that time were already black, after that in 2-3 weeks the entire plant had root rotted even though I only watered it when the soil was dry on top.
