I have a simple tree philodendrun that I've had since 1976; she was in a 4"pot and now she's all grown up living in a 24". This plant has moved with from home to home in 3 states. Philodendrun is a hardy genus and lovely regardless which species you choose. I enjoyed this video, thank you again Kaylee.

I like your taste in plants and completely agree. I recently picked up a 3 foot + Alocasia "Regal Shields" which has velvety heart shaped, dark green leaves with purple undersides. There is a plant I'd like your thoughts on, the Aspidistra. I love its longevity - the way that some plants have been passed down generation after generation to the point where they are over a century old. I also love its associations with the 19th century, Victorian Britain and latter George Orwell, who wrote about it in 'KEEP THE ASPIDISTRAS FLYING'. My interest is the care of the plant. Thanks from Canada.

The Pink Princess is on my daughter's wishlist. My house is in amongst forest trees and very dark so my plants live in the lightest room in the house....the bathroom! I have an 10 yr old Bella Palm. I have been told it is hard to keep so long because of spider mites but mine is healthy so far. I have heard that if a plant name ends in 'ii' it is pronounced 'eee-eye' but there are many pronunciations out there and probably sound different spoken by different language speakers. Thanks, and looking forward to seeing and learning more! I too love Marantas and Calatheas.

I found this tip on the web: For anyone wanting to get white variegation (instead of yellow) on their variegated Philodendron burle-marx, put the plant in direct sunlight for a few hours daily (setting sun hours maybe). The new leaves tend to grow more cream -coloured then white.

Thank you Kaylee! Your videos are so full of educational and insightful info. I love Philodendrons! (Among many other species.) So this was like a super fun show and tell of plants, that though I may never have, I can learn from none the less. I wanted to share that I just recently found what appears to be a vining Prince of Orange. I've looked on the internet to see if I can find info on them vining but I haven't come across anything specific. Except one brief reference to them coming in vining or shrub like varieties (which I can't find again,) and I've gathered that the Prince of Orange seen for sale now is a "newer variety" that is selfheading and so grows in a compact shrub like shape. The one I have definitely seems to have a vining growth pattern, however, and I think I am going to need to stalk it as it gets bigger. The garden center where I found it can have some unusual plants finds, and I just felt that this plant was a bit on the unusual side. It was the only one they had, and it looked like they'd had it a while. Who knows, maybe it's just taken on a different sort of shape from the growing conditions they had it in, but it does look different than the bushy plants I see when I google it. So anyway, it was fun to hear you mention the Prince of Orange, as it's been a rare plant find for me. In fact, plants are fun! and just bring more joy to our lives. Peace!

Hi Kaylee, the plant names are botanical and therefore, Latin. You've done a very good job overall of pronouncing them by the way, whenever you encounter a name ending in two ii the first letter is a short i (sound of e) and the second has the long I which is eye. Loved your video, just found you today and I've subscribed. Much love, Victoria

Interesting, although it would be good to make a distinction between all those hybrids and the species. I looked at hybrid Philodendros, googled their patents after I bought a 'Lemon Lime'. It is stated somewhere that it is a variety of Pholodendron domesticum,. but I suspect it is a hybrid. The hybridizers, some in China and in Florida, do not seem to keep track of what species have been crossed. They cross pollinate several species for a few generations, they see a variation in a seedling and then they clone the selected plant in vitro via stem cell / tissue culture. You can do a search for the Philo 'Prince of Orange'+ patent and you find some paperwork about it. The species are way more interesting to me. I just got Philo subhastatum which I like a lot, and it seems hardy, easy to root and grow. Philodendron verrucosum has very thin leaves and I think it requires high humidity and if you are in a heated apartment you may need a humidifier. Anyway I am not sure if the hybrids are rare as they have been cloned in labs by the thousands.

Hey Kaylee, Love your video on the rare plants. I have to warn you about some of these though. i have been growing plants for 40 years now, and yes they claim these plants are "RARE" when in reality they are not. From my years of seeing different philos come and go on the market what they are now saying is "RARE" is only whats in the limelight. Like the "GOLDEN POTHOS" ok this plant has been around for decades. And now you have to pay far too much money for a 2" pot. Please, these things root easily and as well as the more compact philos. There is a location in south florida here in the U S. that you can find your RARE philos, from your wish list. I forget the name of the place but you can search on google i think and find it. Its what i consider over priced but they do have those you are looking for and if not i am sure they know who does. I just want a nice scindapsus or silver pothos, i just refuse to pay over 10.00 for a 2" cutting.. I have had them in the past and they all died. And i really am an avid plant grower so i dont know why they died. I have the same problem with maidenhair ferns. LOVE THEM cant seem to grow them. Remember the varigation in these plants change with EACH LEAF. Rarely will you find one that has a consistent varigation. And some of them i think are one variety with a "NEW NAME" not so much a rare species. Just a little info to let you know that you might not be getting as RARE a plant as you might think. Thanks for the videos. HAPPY NEW YEAR :)

Have you tried a nice birds nest fern? i have one in my bed room and its doing wonderfully. easy to grow and with the humidity you have and the dapple light i think you could have one massive plant there.
