There are a few tricks to get better low light, it's not just about fast glass or high ISO, it also has to do with breaking the shutter angle (rule of thumb).

This reminds me of your 8K Raw burst hyperlapse video. Niche film technique that can only be used in certain situations with certain subjects and you have to make some sacrifices. But when done well, you end up with a hell of an effect! Nicely done.

I would say with film cameras, 180 degrees shutter angle wasn't chosen because of most cinematic motion blur (our days, with digital cameras you may choose it because of that reason). However ... Film cameras with rotary disc shutter might be set to other shutter angles too, and it's done not for motion blur, but for exposure purposes (of course with longer exposure you may have stronger motion blur. But i think way back then people wasn't considering motion blur.) Also film cameras with rotary disc shutter can't be set to shutter angle 360, because they need to have time to switch the film to the next frame (without smearing the frame), and that remaining angle (the whole part of the rotary disc) is used to cover the frame from light while it slides out and a fresh one slides in. 360 degree means exposure during all the time of a one single frame on any particular frame rate. So on frame-rate 24 fps: 360 degrees shutter means 1/24 180 = 1/48 90 = 1/96 On 30 fps: 360 degrees shutter means 1/30 180 = 1/60 90 = 1/120 And you can have 360 degrees shutter speed only with digital cameras. With film cameras you can't dedicate all time of the frame to a frame, because you need to have some time to switch to the next frame (as i explained above)

I shot a gala event with a contemporary dance performance a few days ago. Used 360 with the bmpcc4k & a variety of canon lenses. Even with all the movement I'm happy with the results. Was able to shoot at 1600 iso rather than 3200 for cleaner results. Did use a tripod. On another note I used your idea of the external battery pack & have made three of them. Two 6000 units & one 3000. I adapted small quick release plates to all of them & couldn't be happier with the setup. Thanks for the great videos!

I actually tried this trick in Vegas with my starter DSLR at 1600 ISO and was impressed with the results. Made my noisy low light footage less so because I was able to use a more reasonable ISO. I was gonna stick to the 180 degree rule but specifically remembered this video! As for your Saving Private Ryan reference, I do something similar when filming paintball, because I like the aesthetic of staccato movement in a combat sport, as it does add a faux-historic feel that players on the teams who hire me seem to take home as even more tangible memories of what they did. As such, I film tournament action at a disgustingly high shutter speed. 500 minimum, 1000 max, at 60FPS.

They went with more open shutter in PE to catch the gun fire. One of the issues they had with Scarface was the shutter speed would blank some of the muzzle flash. With less speed, you are able to make the gun fire look bright and impressive without resorting to CG or dangerous high amounts of slower burning gun powder. Watch the clip you sampled as the man fires the Thompson next to the tree. His hands and the tree glow naturally from the muzzle flash. That is almost never done right with CG.

Josh, great video, great information. So, here you tackled the trick of using a slower shutter speed to gain a full stop of light, what are the chances of you doing a video demonstrating the inverse of this trick? What if you want to shoot at a lower f/stop but don't want your footage blown out from all the light you're allowing into the camera, can you increase your shutter speed , allowing less light into the camera and perhaps gaining a full f/stop. It would be super cool to see you handle that demonstration too. Great work, keep them coming!!!

always good to see you tweak the oft confusing digital boundaries and also educate as to what went before. indeed, the SPR movie got that shutter angle trick from the music videos DP's that were using the technique way back in the '80s. digital has opened up a new playing field and democratized the game. in fact, when the bmpcc gives shutter 'angle' option, I'd be curious to know how they emulate the actual physical film shutter angle internally.

I see you went to the abandoned Lake Delores Waterpark! I drove past it last week. I need to stop there some day.

Hey, another really cool video ! But in my opinion, I think you should have precise something more about the shutter speed, and the rule of 180°. Because if you want to avoid flick from some light light you're gonna need to put you're shutter speed on 1/50 in some cases (or 1/60, depending of your country). To know how to convert in circular shutter, one simple rule: frame rate x shutter speed x 360. For exemple : 24x (1/50) x 360 = 172,8° If you're recording on high speed frame rate, you're gonna need to put a 1/100 (or even more) shutter speed, to avoid exeed 360°. Hope it will help ! (oh and please forgive me for my bad english)
