Mitchel missed a one on one tackle on James Lowe , however I would always expect a world class winger to beat an opponent on a one on one basis so I would not drop Mitchel for the mistake . Like the move of Freeman to 15

It was a shocker of a tackle goes far too high, its poor technique and I think he gets stood up by the footwork of Lowe so ends up upright in the collision which he is losing every time. However you expect better at the highest level. Having said that without Mitchell attack looks too slow.

Dropping Mitchell is a terrible idea. Hes head and shoulders above other English 9s. Expecting a scrumhalf to take down Lowe and Aki is ridiculous. Ben Spencer has never shown any promise in an England shirt, theres a reason why he only has a small handful of caps at 32 years old

Tom Willis and Ted Hill need an opportunity to play, even together, as they are top quality players. England need some carefully picked changes to be made otherwise this level of frustration with England losing close matches will continue. The strong tackling in the later parts of the game must be sustained and the two aforementioned players tackle strongly and are both very dynamic. Henry Slade is a great player but a chance to improve the back line must be made to find more dynamism and stronger tackling.

Fin Smith is the future. He's an orchestrator at 10 not a mercurial talent like Marcus. You need the former at international level. Also, need to bring Lawrence into the game more, when he is involved for both Bath and England, things happen. My dream partner for him would be Van Rensberg from Bristol. I hope he gets his eligibility soon.

Agree with your back row selections for England. No one who watches the Premiership would dispute that Ted Hill and Tom Willis are the form No 6 and 8s respectively. Against France, we are going to need power. Picking three No 7s would be abjectly the wrong plan this week.

I like your enthusiasm Rich, but making wholesale changes to a 23 isn’t Borthwick’s way. Personnel aside, the big problem for meIs England picking a side to try and stop the opposition rather than enforce their game on the opposition. Why I think will actually happen is that Chessum will come in at 6, Tom Curry to 7 and Ben Curry to the bench. Roebuck for Murley if he’s injured and that’s it. I think Borthwick will have France’s perceived aerial weakness in mind and keeping Steward and Freeman will allow England to put France under pressure there. I’d be shocked if anything else changes. My 23 would be: 1: Genge 2: Cowan-Dickie 3: Stuart 4: Itoje 5: Martin 6: Chessum 7: Tom Curry 8: Willis 9: Mitchell 10: F. Smith 11: Sleightholme 12: Lawrence 13: Freeman 14: Roebuck 15: M. Love the England pick, young, strong and it looks like an exciting 23man squad,, but, we all know it's not going to happen.... honestly I cannot see England beating France, in fact its going to probably be a complete beat down.... I hope I wrong! Scotland are also playing better than England so come round three, I can only see 3 losses, probably acceptable for the RFU.... To keep my spirits up I will watch the U20's, got some really talented youngsters ..... on this point,, why oh why cannot the RFU let oversea England players play for England, we need out best players playing in the best leagues, it then gives space for the youngsters to come through into more premiership sides.

Would love to see Izuchukwu stay on the bench, agree he has that spark of special about him, but if McCarthy is back the domino knock on effect may not fall in his favour, as Beirne will surely move back to 6 and with Conan on the Bench they'll need another jumper, so it'll be Henderson or Baird. Ditto if Hansen is not 100 percent then it has to be Nash, who has always shown up well and is pacy to boot. However, not sure it's fair to say Doris had a *bad* game. He may not have been as noticeable in the loose as normal, but he did a mountain of work, carried 11 times, made 14 tackles, threw a couple of offlads, and played a Captain's role all over.

Rugby Analyst I like the selection though I’d be interested to know why you’ve given the nod to Tom over his brother at openside? For me Tom had the makings of a great test openside circa 2017 to 2019 but post bulking up and becoming part of the Kamikazee Kids partnership with Underhill, when he’s played at openside he always looks a bit on the stodgy side for me and I thought this was especially true in the last Lions tests when he played at 7. At 6 T Curry looks a lot more comfortable and I think makes more of an impact - having said that totally agree with your pick of Hill at 6 - think this should help with lineout and carrying ditto Tom Willis. Would also like to see Martin get more involved in the hard carrying as it least one of our locks needs to cover this - otherwise it may be time to give Chessum preference in that 5 shirt.

Alex Mitchell will come good Rich I promise :-) He just had a bad day at the office and was slightly rusty after injury. Personally I would like to see Dingwall at 12. He is a like-for-like with Slade, a good defender and second distributor which will once again allow Lawrence to play in his favoured position at 13. I like the idea of Quirke off the bench, he is tailor-made for France with his running threat and like you, I agree that Randall is proving not to be an international 9. Which also begs the question, if Quirke comes off the bench should we have Ford alongside him as a familiar combination? As many pundits have said, the big thing for England is leadership in the second half. Ford has a big rugby brain, he's 100% fit (unlike in the Autumn) and has good form coming into the 6Ns. If we learnt anything from the Ireland game, experience off the bench is crucial; so Jamie George and Ford for solidity and Quirke, Earl, Hill and CCS providing the dynanism. Then sub off Daly if he's having a howler :-) for Marcus Smith at 15 in the second half. My team: 1. Genge 2. LCD 3. Stuart 4. Itoje 5. Martin 6. Chessum 7. T. Curry 8. Willis 9. Mitchell 10. Smith 11. Sleighthome 12. Dingwall 13. Lawrence 14. Roebuck 15. Daly (controversial I know but he has looked good there for Sarries, is infinitely quicker than Stewart and Roebuck nullifies the aerial threat off one wing, plus the cross-field kicks from Dupont) 16. George 17. Heyes 18. Opoko-Fordjour 19. Hill 20. CCS 21. Earl 22. Quirke 23. Ford Freeman and Ben Curry suffer only because we need size off the bench and Freeman doesn't have the dynamism as an impact player.

Is it just possible that SB actually thinks Fin may Marshall the backing better than marcus, but just can't face dropping marcus to the bench. Instead play him out of position in the hope of fireworks. Marcus at FB is a stop gap at best and surely he would have been better putting him on the bench and putting daly at FB. I think dalys best days are behind him but he has a huge boot, decent runner and ok under the high ball and he does play FB. We seem to be heading down the road of desperate selections out of position hoping for some luck. Hope I'm wrong but going to be watching this game from behind the sofa as it could get ugly.

That's too many changes for England. Ripping everything up before an incredibly tough game will just leave a whole bunch of combinations that have never or hardly ever played together. That's not fair to the new players who will be judged harshly, and it will just mean another bad loss. Keep Mitchell and Earl at the very least as starters. Lawrence needs to be at 13, which is where he plays best, which means keeping Slade at 12.

England have lost 1 game in the tournament and your making it sound like the entire thing is over. We managed to get a bonus point, there’s still another 4 rounds, anything could happen. England I believe with a world class coach, with the right selections and the right philosophy could be one of the top sides in the world. But the trouble is the RFU, Bill Sweeney the England coaching set up are all fundamentally inadequate. Anyone who understands international rugby would know Steward is too slow at full back and also knows that Marcus Smith is NOT a full back. The same is true that Freeman is not quick enough for a winger, that Slade is not good enough at centre. Yet these players are repeatedly picked , it is a 😂joke. Smith always going to full back for the last 20mins doesn’t work 😡 ! He is too small for a full back leave him at fly half like Wilko was! We also need to back ourselves to attack more with ball in hand, we kick far too much. Box kicking in your 22 is one thing but Mitchell doing it around the halfway line is utterly pathetic, it’s like he’s been told to do it, which rules out playing off the cuff instinctive rugby. Mitchell should be doing far more sniping around the edge of rucks. He needs to up his game otherwise I’d play Quirke who has pace, George Hendy should be full back, Freeman move to centre with Fayo Waboso and Gabriel Itoye on the wings and a back row of Chessum, Willis & Tom Curry with Henry Pollock to come on at halftime for Curry. Do this and England have pace and attacking players and X factor! We are so bloody boring in our mindset, and have been for years & years apart from the Woodward era. In fact appoint Woodward as RFU Director of rugby and tell him to find England a new head coach!

I think English fans and pundits need a reality check. England are good, they are just not at Ireland or Frances level. Changing half the squad week to week isn't going to yield better results. You've been close in a number of games in the las 12 months. Some consistency in selection is needed!

Very reactive. Overall Mitch is easily best 9. This England team were not far off in last 4-5 games. They will come good very soon. These games are all great experience for this young team. Every team goes through a cycle of change. Good time are coming. Far too reactive selection. Too panicked

If your going to take a risk with Freeman at fullback why not go all the way and start Carpenter or Hodge . Totally agree with Roebuck coming in but would sooner see H-Collins on the other wing . As far as 12 and 13 go , think I would change it up completely and play S.Atkinson and Beard because the present selections just are not working . Why are we going backwards selecting Spencer let's look to the future and play Quirke . 10 has to be M.Smith . No to Genge and C-Dickie , Opoku and Langdon or Oghre are the way forward . Second row Itoje hasn't done a decent job for a couple of years now , just a plodding penalty giver , so for me I would sooner see the likes of Coles get a chance even Batley , don't understand how Munga isn't in with a shout . Backrow heroic ? we actually lost the match . Hill - Willis and Pearson for me .

I don’t think Thomas can start at 10 for wales! A 12 for club, you don’t suddenly become a test match level 10 at 26! I think Dan Edwards needs to just be given the keys and Anscombe should be in the squad anyway to help mentor

So youre glazing over Mitchell's ability to pass quick ball because he missed a one on one tackle on a winger he wasnt supposed to be in position for? Defence isnt the first thing i pick 9s for so dont think so. Ben Spencer is slow in passing and decision making and i guarantee you would drop him again next week. He has never had a good attacking game. The pack is fine but funny how keen everyone was for CCS last week and now you want him to be dropped again. I would go with Hill and start Willis, who would be better as a starter. Nothing though will cover that England are poor in the last 20 mins due to lack of fitness and the bench are disjointed

Lets face it England are a 2nd tier rugby team, italy will beat England. Wooden spoon decider, with wales, , England going backwards under clueless borthwick,, England have good players but poor coaches, if borthwick isn't gone soon, by the world cup he will be still wondering what he's best team is,

Wow- SB is never going to go for that against Les Blues- maybe against Ecossia and the Bravehearts- just to confuse them a bit- and maybe if they don't do well in the next 2 games we may see this sort of mix up for England BUT SB will not tinker too much this week- bet Jamie George comes back and Daly at FB with our tall friend going on to the wing and Roebuck on the bench for the forthcoming Aerial Bombardment- (Maybe Spencer comes in for Mitchel who goes to the bench for the box kick bombs- and the bench will be better, 6-2 split again Slade to cover 10 def)

Conan 6 Beirne needs to stay in second row he is far more effective there... The slight drawback is Mc Carthy or Ryan...to start where it becomes tactical..depending on lineout factor and opposition strengths weaknesses.. Mc Carthy if fit to start v Scotland as i feel we can really impose ourselves up front from the off

I think Ben Spencer is a good choice. After Mitchell was injured in November his stock rose without playing but his performance against Ireland was not acceptable like you said.
