NATURALISM ART
Today I'm painting a self portrait / figure study in an Australian Bush Setting! I'll be working with oil paint and in a naturalist style.
Naturalism in art refers to the depiction of realistic objects in a natural setting. The Realist movement of the 19th century advocated naturalism in reaction to the stylized and idealized depictions of subjects in Romanticism, but many painters have used a similar approach over the centuries. One example of Naturalism is the artwork of American artist William Bliss Baker, whose landscape paintings are considered some of the best examples of the naturalist movement. Another example is the French Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848-84), from the Barbizon School, with his paintings of people, or figures in their natural settings. Bastien-Lepage had a very strong influence on the young Australian Artist Tom Roberts (1856-1931), whilst studying abroad in England and Europe. Roberts, who is considered "The Farther of Australian Art", brought these new ideas back with him to Australia and went out painting with his artist friends in the bush, working direct from nature (Plein Air). Roberts told his colleagues to paint what they saw and to be particularly attentive to the representation of tonal values. This was Australian impressionism - later to be known as The Heidelberg School - in its early days.

I just watched the whole creative process for this self-portrait for about the 22th time and I feel very privileged. This is seriously one of the most beautifully executed paintings I have seen. I have painted in many mediums for 45 years or so but have never been satisfied with most I have done. To achieve this level would be a dream, however will not happen so just watching a master create is such a treat.

My favourite so far. Your talent is so natural, nothing forced, it flows with energy. Love the scraping sound of your knife on canvas, crossed my mind that you could be a master bricklayer. This one brought a poem to mind, written by David Waggoner, 1999. “LOST” Stand still. The trees ahead and the bushes beside you Are not lost Wherever you are is called Here. And you must treat it like a powerful stranger. Must ask permission to know it and be known. The forest breathes. Listen. It answers. I have made this place around you. If you leave it, you may come back again saying Here. : No two trees are the same to Raven. No two trees are the same to Wren. If what a tree or bush does is lost on you. You are surely lost. Stand still. The forest knows where you are. You must let it find you.

it's so nice to watch you paint again. Another great painting! I want to mention that your enthusiasm is truly contagious. I know that you love to use pallet knife almost exclusively but there is something to be said for using brushes as well, like you have demonstrated in this gorgeous painting. I think that when you are using both, the hardness of the pallet knife mark is set against the softness of the brush work, - making the pallet knife marks maybe not so predetermined but presenting themselves as a choice between soft and hard.
