The more fantasy I read, the fewer 5 stars I find. Only two this year out of 46 books. Both Joe Abercrombie. I wish I could go back to a few years ago when everything I read just amazed me because it was so new and fresh. Feel like I’m overly critical now. I still enjoy almost every single book. Just not blown away.

A huge TBR, Petrik! The Devils sounds soooo good, but I won't be reading it soon--my TBR has grown to much and I must reign it in. SA5 would be the exception, ha! Hunger was so much fun; loved the humour in that series! BTW, that Goldeater edition is stunning!

Because it had a similar setting with "Katabasis", "The Devils" will be my first book by Joe Abercombie, but I have not been aproved for an eARC yet. I think I will read "Blackheart Man" by Nalo Hopkinson for sure and the rest will be some Speculative (SF - Fantasy) Murder Mysteries and some Gothic novellas, depending on my reading mood and time. Happy reading to you!

Hi there Petrik. How are you doing? That is so cool that you went to Worldcon. I am really envious. Someday, I would love to go to that. I loved watching the 2 videos that you made with Library of a Viking. Most of the books that you both had mentioned, I have not listened to yet. I do agree with both of you about the Priory of the Orange Tree. It took me starting and stopping that book 5 times before I could finish it. I did not agree with her agenda. If you examine each of her characters, you will notice that all of the ones who were killed, had similar traits. I really didn't like that the guy who harmed a dragon was never punished. I loved the dragon, not the nameless one, but the other one, the best. Also, I wanted to let you know, that after several months of working on listening to Lost Metal by Brandon Sanderson, I finished it this past Tuesday. I kept getting distracted by other books. Today, I started reading while listening to Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson, which is the first of the secret projects. It is so far really cute and good. Good luck with finding a five star read. If Joe Abercrombie can't do, then I doubt that anyone can.
@PetrikLeoАй бұрын
Hi! I'm doing well. Thanks for asking. And yeah, I had such a great time at Worldcon. I miss it already. I hope you'll enjoy Tress of the Emerald Sea. I think it's great! Even if very different compared to Sanderson's other books. I will let you know whether The Devils managed to score a 5 stars or not. :)

I have had some really good reads from new releases. One is a book you read and liked too, The Failures by Benjamin Liar. So good! The other is Doors of Midnight by R R Virdi, second book in the Tales of Tremaine. I initially had a lot of reservations when I read The First Binding last year, being a huge Kingkiller fan. But now I read Doors of Midnight and it was so good! There are some nods to KKC but it's very much its own thing, lots of interesting details of the magic, the lore, the story is really engaging as well. It's better than Wise Man's Fear as a book imo. 🤯 Then I went back and reread The First Binding and really liked it as well. Think I just need to get over the KKC similarity and see it for what it is - a really good book. I'd recommend Doors of Midnight Petrik, it goes some really cool places and is such an engaging, smooth read. Happy reading!
@PetrikLeoАй бұрын
Thank you so much, Paromita! I must say, it IS a surprise to hear how much you've come to love The First Binding and Doors of Midnight. I got so many hate mails and questions of credibility due to enjoying The First Binding despite its MANY similarities to Name of the Wind. But as you said, IF the second book stands stronger as its own thing, then I'm happy. I look forward to reading it! :)
@Paromita_MАй бұрын
@@PetrikLeo Replying to last part first, it really does. And one cool thing, I could read it right away and thoroughly enjoy it without needing to reread the first book. I'm not going to say it stands on its own as it builds on The First Binding but one could start with The Doors of Midnight, enjoy it and go back to The First Binding if one wants imo. Regarding the first part, I must say I was one of the skeptics, even haters when The First Binding came out because I love KKC and was like, what is this, KKC but South Asian? 🤣 However after reading Doors of Midnight, I reread The First Binding and noticed lots of subtle and clear differences. Virdi moved around a lot of things which have a knock-on effect, also he explains the magic much more. The frame story is more dynamic, it keeps moving. I have a theory for what Virdi might be going for and based on that, I was able to enjoy the books thoroughly. It's perfectly fine to not like Tales of Tremaine or KKC or any series. But the messages doubting someone's credibility, sorry not OK for me. I've been following your reviews on Novel Notions, GR and here for a long time. Forgetting everything else, what would even be the point of not being upfront about how you really feel about a book? 🤣 We all know rant reviews get so much more views than calm ones. So why would one do the latter if one is not genuine. Same thing with the plagiarism accusation. I think Tremaine is in a very clear conversation with KKC. But why plagiarise something which doesn't have a very good reputation right now? People give LOTR example but LOTR was complete and beloved, KKC is incomplete and even some diehard fans are disappointed to put it mildly. I don't see the logic. 🤔 Anyway, I did enjoy the second book a lot. Gonna say that except the prose where Rothfuss wins (ugh why is he such a good writer 🤣), Doors of Midnight won over Wise Man's Fear for me overall.

Hope to get to «Brothers in the Wind» this Winter and VERY excited for book #3 in the «Bloodsworn Saga»! After a very ambitious (but very rewarding) Summer TBR (both the «Memory, Sorrow & Thorn» & the «Prince of Nothing» trilogies ++), this Autumn I am gonna be a bit more mood reading with no «big chonkers». I know I am definitely gonna read «Leviathan Wakes» (The Expanse #9, Space Opera, only book I didn’t get to from my Summer TBR) & «Lustrum» (US: «Conspirata», Cicero Trilogy #2, Historical Fiction about the eponymous Roman Statesman) by Robert Harris (book #1 «Imperium» is contending for my book of the year so far, together with GGK’s «A Brightness Long Ago»). I am most likely also gonna get to Michael Moorcock’s «(The Tale of)The Eternal Champion» Trilogy (Epic Fantasy/S&S). Might also get to some Rosemary Sutcliff (YA Historical Fiction) & David Gemmell (Epic Fantasy). Cheers!
