Thsnk you so much for sharing, your story is very cool to hear. I always wanted to learn how to sew, but grew up really poor and mum never trusted me not to beeak her machine, so i definitely was one of those 'scared of the machine' people. I had my daughter really young, and was still poor, lol, and made her a few things out of scraps. I did het a machine in my 20's, but was still scared of breaking it and had no one to teach me how to use it. A couple of attemps with mainstream patterns lost my confidence. I only got my confidence again with sewing teachers on the internet in my forties, and I'm so incredible grateful. I'm not poor anymore, and love supporting indie makers and creators who share their work online so generously. I am so pleased that young people can now learn so much for free!! I cannot say how pleased i am that we didn't end up with another Marc Jacobs, dressing there rich. Instead, yourwork is genuinely empowering, and acessible. Thank youso much!!!

I enjoyed hearing your story. I have sewn the Magic Pants and your blouse, Endless Summer? And loved them both. Your sewing machine story was so nostalgic of my own. My mom had a sewing machine and had lost interest in learning to sew. She let me have the machine and let me use it however. I learned how to sew in 8th grade Home Economics. I remember sewing shorts that had a flap so that they were “disguised” as a skirt. This was in the 60’s and we couldn’t wear pants to school. I sewed them for my sister and all of our friends. ❤ Thank you for sharing your story.

I really appreciate your candor about the highs and lows of your journey. I also love creating clothes sustainably. I am currently making an open back jumpsuit from unfettered patterns from a torn up king size bedsheet. I would love to be able to reproduce things I really like for myself but still don't quite know how to do that. (ie. Grisha store has a sundress without side seam in orange or black STUNNING, ) What I like best about the design is that it would always fit no matter if I gain or loose weight after a year of use. It can be very discouraging when taking the time to carefully make something, after a year of use it doesn't fit any longer. This is why wrap designs are attractive to me, not to mention I love the look of a wrap because it lends itself to better fitting. Keep enjoying your journey!

I started sewing 20 years ago because my daughter had sensory issues. Buying clothing from the thrift store and deconstructing each garment to see how it was put together. No teachers, no workshops, no experience. LOL...some of that first year was comical! But year by year I got better and better and more confident. She's an adult now and does her own thing....no longer wants mom to sew for her so I finally have time to sew for me! I found along the way I loved textile art...slow stitching. One of my most fun projects was a halloween costume I made for her. Actually it's my profile picture and my daughter wearing one of my art projects. She wanted to be Gaia...Mother Nature that year. All of the fabric and flowers/leaves were scraps I had laying around the house and the rest, believe it or not came out of a dumpster located at the back of my local Joann Fabrics. You can't believe what they throw away! I was grabbing some boxes one day and noticed all the stuff they threw away and with my daughters permission, sanitized and used them for that project. Cheapest thing monetarily I've ever made. It was so much fun tho...definitely a labor of love. I can't wait for the jersey pattern! Love your channel. New subscriber here.

Hi Ann! I loved learning about your background! I really admire your work and find tons of value in what you share. I had a very similar fashion school experience at FIDM and never entered the industry. I didn’t sew for a long time after that, but 25 years later I’m teaching all sorts of sewing classes, surprising myself with the info I retained from school, sewing my own clothes, and dreaming of designing home sewing patterns. You are so inspiring and I appreciate all of your hard work! 🎉

Honestly, you are ‘sew’ inspiring, lol. I am also a sewing nerd and have attempted to make historical clothes (that I have no actual use for…) because I just love to do it. Now that I am retired, this hobby is a huge part of my daily happiness - helps to distract from the nasty winter here in Canada. Oh your backstory is so interesting . I found you through the magic pants and I actually contacted you about if you would ever grade them down to a smaller size as I had a lot to do that on my own pattern and I did an okay job but I'm not a pattern drafter and it was a challenge. I'm so excited about getting to try this pattern from the pattern designer that actually will fit me so. Thank you Ann for listening to your customers.

Wow, what a journey! Thanks for sharing. I have a similar story…I started sewing at 10, taking lessons at Singers that started my love affair with sewing and making my own clothes. That was in the 70’s. I also went to fashion design school in the 80’s, graduated but never thought I was good enough to design. I kind of gave up on that when I had kids but still continued to sew. Good for you that you never gave up on your dreams. That was a lot of hard work and determination.❤ I ended up going back to school to become a nurse…not exactly creative, but I still sew!

Very inspirational story! I am obsessed with vintage sewing books (well, any sewing book), and that is the one I’d keep if I had to choose one. I liked it so much I bought 2 (one to use when I’m with family in another area). I’ve spent so much on new higher end books, but they are not as good for home sewing in my opinion. I also learned to sew as a teenager (but in the 80’s) like you, and my mom also let me do what I wanted (she also loves sewing and has also made one too many t-shirt quilts). Definitely no KZbin or IG learning back then!

Thanks for sharing your sewing journey, also your sweater looks fantastic! I learned to sew as a teen in the 80s because I was poor, I hated the prevailing fashion at the time, and I wanted something exciting to wear, so I bought vintage 50s and 60s dresses at the thrift store and altered them to fit. I also pegged my Levis as cool kids did not wear wide leg pants :) I never sewed my own clothes other than the odd wrap dress or skirt until last year when I started sewing primarily 40s dress patterns. I no longer want to buy clothes but I haven't felt brave enough for pants yet, one day I hope to make some magic pants!

I swear I could repeat nearly every thing you just said (as to how you get into sewing) for my own life experience, it was like dejavu. haha. I still am fascinated on pattern drafting/slopers/blocks and altering/creating clothes but I don't the crazy fashion houses out there. And I had that same book growing up. It was my mom's, but she couldn't keep up with my "demands" haha, of what I wanted to have sewn, so she too, basically handed over her sewing machine and told me to have at it. NONE and I mean NONE and no one that I know growing up or even now, sews, made anything or was even interested in sewing. So I I used to being alone all the time just sewing. And you sewing studio - wow, looks great. Thanks for sharing.

It was great watching this! Your college experience was very similar to mine, in fact we’re probably close to the same age, except I went to Georgia Southern for Graphic Design. I got disillusioned with other Graphic Designers very quickly, and it seems like they all work in toxic work environments. Anyway, my introduction to you was through KZbin and somehow I completely missed that you were the creator of the Magic pants. As soon as I get a little more confident on a machine, I hope to try them, as that was the pattern that inspired me to get back into sewing!

It’s nice to hear I wasn’t the only one who came out of college disillusioned. I did feel a little bad talking ish about my peers. It wasn’t all of them!! But yeah, the whole energy around all of it, not just my peers, was… hard.

@ I was lucky in that my immediate Graphic Design class was generally enjoyable, but a lot of my other art classes promoted an unhealthy level of competitiveness, often through the critiquing process! While I did need some critiquing and comparison to grow as an artist, our encouragement to be conceptual often led to a lot of us just learning how to be really good at BS in subjects that we weren’t even close to being proficient in. Sometimes I just wanted to make something beautiful to learn the process and enjoy the medium without having to defend the idea behind it. As I got into the workplace, I found that a lot of my peers had developed an overinflated sense of self and an arrogance about their skills (some of them for good reason, as a lot of them really were talented). Unfortunately, I still feel like I’m not good enough…and I honestly wonder why I didn’t go into Veterinary Medicine like I originally intended!! 🤣 I don’t think I would have made it at SCAD, so I’m impressed by your credentials.

Thanks for your story. 1. Where do you get the labels & price tags online? 2. Do you prewash all fabrics before construction?

I LOVE that book! I had it for many years. When I moved in with my daughter 2 yrs ago I lost track of it. There’s a chance that it is in my house which I moved out of 7 yrs ago into an apartment. That might be when I lost track of it. It is a fabulous book. If you ever see one for sale, grab it!

Hopefully this book isn’t too rare and there’s more out there! I found the needlework version of this book at a yard sale one time and had to get that too

Thank you for sharing these inspiring facets of your journey through life thus far! ❤ I’m surely not alone in saying this, but your entrepreneurial spirit and values/mission-driven decision-making really resonates with me. Your experiences are an incredible reminder of how things will work out in one way or another, so long as we consistently exercise perseverance and courage. Maybe it won’t lead to a place where we expected or aimed for from the start, but it will be just as rewarding by fulfilling the exact sense of purpose we were looking for all along. 🤗 And in your case, everything has come full circle!!- You said it yourself, “a designer is someone who….reinvents pants…”-And you have done exactly that!!😁🥳👏 It would be so cool to hear more about your experience working for a sustainable + ethical business in a future video! Maybe you could even tie in some insight on what people should look for when it comes to recognizing greenwashing and understanding whether a brand is being honest about their claims of sustainable + ethical practices (Just an idea- no pressure 😊). I was also wondering- do you have plans to release a pattern for the optical illusion patchwork checkerboard pattern t-shirt design you made for yourself recently?? I would love to make one and really think it would be a total hit! 😍 P.S.- I also love how you seem to design through the lens of creativity, innovation, practicality, and your own personal style /aesthetic preferences! This combination makes your designs truly shine with ingenuity and authenticity! 😻❤️

Thanks for this thoughtful response. I love your idea about sharing the checkboard tee. Perhaps a KZbin tutorial instead of a full pattern? Or it could grow into a full pattern after that. Good idea I hadn’t thought of that!

@ I think it could even be sold in an e-book tutorial format (with written instructions, photos, and video) as an “expansion pack” that could be released alongside your t-shirt pattern and used with it!? People would definitely be happy to pay for it in whatever format you offer it in- I certainly cannot be the only one who would! Whatever you think though! 😊 I was shocked when you only mentioned it as an aside in your video because I think it’s really cool and it really wow’d me!! 🤗

Thanks for sharing your story (I'm the second person plus the person below). We are sometimes too hard on ourselves and why? Life is too short. You have a passion--great---sewing rules and so does quilting. Have u checked Maura Ambrose out a quilter and alumni from you school. And the great Andre Talley use to be on the board of your college. Just do it! Best. 🎨🎨✌✌

Yes Maura was in the class above me. We both took Pamela Wiley’s Art Quilt class and were both deeply inspired. And ALT is also from my hometown! And spoke at my graduation 🤗

FYI having machines in non heated area can cause condensation to metal parts when warming up. I learned that the hard way.
