I still don't have a clue what sort of jig/tool/coat hanger/whatever you attempted to make while whining like a puppy ... however, I guess we all at some stage in our cluttered shop lives comes to that same depression point.

@@SteifWoodThat's a hell of a thing to say to someone you don't know. Was that supposed to be funny or something? Or are you just cruel like that?

I don't think I've ever connected so much to a video. I feel you, my shop currently is in total disarray and I'm working slowly to make a permanent spot for everything. I also run a carpentry/remodel business so I have stuff EVERYWHERE.

This video hit at the perfect time. I find myself not making progress on my business because I am overwhelmed by the state of my shop right now. Finally had a good weekend last weekend and made some meaningful progress but still so much to do. Thanks for sharing a very real perspective into life as a solopreneur.

Andy, I spend over 4 weeks this summer clearing out, cleaning up, and reorganizing the shop so it is actually a pleasure to work in. No more stumbling over crap or hunting through piles of nonsense. Very happy you were able to take time out or your busy schedule too, to make your shop a fun place again to work.

I totally understand that feeling and am glad you are in a better place. May the continued removal/thinning of unnecessary clutter, both mentally and physically, bring you increased serenity and productivity. Thanks for the update!

I currently hate my shop set up. I moved it around before I started a project that's really too big for my space and now I actually dred working on the project. Terrible conundrum. Love your work

I feel this pain so much. My shop isn’t a production shop, as such, but it does exist as a support facility for all the other activities that go on. So it’s 1600 sq. feet of overlapping woodshop, repair shop, mechanics shop, welding shop, materials and parts storage, and enough tools and associated bits for heavy-duty mechanicals, plumbing, landscaping, trucking, and everything that goes along with 40 years of a pair of Generalist Tradesmen, disguised by day as an earthmoving construction outfit… As such, everything that goes on in the shop is a rush or urgent repair or buil, and setup + cleanup get pushed further back in the queue than the more urgent external tasks that generate income. To do just about anything requires a deep breath and a reconfiguring of the workspace. And being exhausted at the end of the day doesn’t leave much on the table to tackle the gordian knot behind the overhead doors.

thanks for the honesty Andy....I need to get cracking on Christmas gifts, my version of production as a hobbyist. My shop is a mess and not feeling it. I need to just go down there, get myself organized again and make the first cut. I know what happens from there, my passion reignites and I'm happy again.

This video is very useful for all of us who go through periodic spells of anxiety or depression or just feeling dread at something. If we are lucky, the cause is something that we are able to deal with ourselves; sometimes, that cause is out of our control. There are a hundred different techniques to resolve or alleviate the symptoms. Different ones will suit different people as there is no single “catch-all” solution. Many times, it will require a little help from an outsider and, as men, it seems we are inherently programmed not to talk about mental health issues. That first step of finding someone to talk to can be the hardest. It may mean talking to a friend or a professional. Sometimes, if you are lucky, you can join a club (woodworking, model trains, whatever) and that group, almost unknowingly, helps you identify the causes and what you might be able to do. My anxiety, my depression affected the people I love. It was realising that it was hurting the, that made me look for solutions.

I've got a solution for things like these that you dread to do. Timebox them. Just set a timer with a fixed manageable amount of time (start with 10 minutes or so) to work on things you don't feel like doing. Do that at a fixed time every day when you know you still have enough energy to do stuff. Odds are that once you get started you will want to continue, but that can give you the small nudge to start on projects you really don't feel like doing.

Idk why people are being so rude to you in the comments you don't deserve it. Everybody has parta of their job that they don't like. And making a video about that is reasonable.
