#Hamilton #Musical #cover
My family immigrated from the Philippines back in the 80’s, so I never knew what living there was like. America has been my home for nearly 27 years now, and I only know this 2nd-generation immigrant experience. I won’t fully understand what my parents/grandparents/aunts/uncles went through, but I listen to their stories and learn why they wanted to come to the U.S. The ideals of America and opportunities for growth were enticing, and the chance to start anew and have a possibility for their children to have a different kind of life and legacy, were major factors in choosing to uproot their lives. As a result, my brother/U.S cousins/I have received opportunities in work and possible futures that we may not have gotten in the PI.
#Hamilton (the musical) is an immigrant story. Essentially all the Founding Fathers were immigrants, and had similar ideals of/for America. But those principles can only get you so far - the 1st act is filled with so much promise, the potential of this nation that they got to build, and the 2nd act looks at how idealism is a two way street. Hamilton and friends found in themselves a responsibility to help construct America, and left legacies that live on in history, renewed with this musical. [Side note: I love Hamilton, but #InTheHeights is my favorite musical of ALL TIME BABY. 🎶]
So what is my responsibility in life? Is it to my family name? The country my family left? The country I live in (even though it doesn’t take responsibility for a majority of the people in it)? Do I / we have any responsibilities at all?
What will my legacy be? A sadboi musician and avid movie lover? My constant insistence on not forgetting the Ñ? Who will care in 427 years?
And what does it mean for me to be Filipino-American? What does it mean to be American? So look (around, look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now) at the fireworks (light up the night sky!), think about your worldly / personal responsibilities and legacy, and watch #Hamilfilm!
This video was a labor of love for me and Dwain Burke. This was the first song I ever fully recorded, produced, mixed and “mastered” myself. I wouldn’t have been able to do this without help and guidance from Anthony Barro, who has produced all my music for 11+ years now. I asked Dwain to help with the edit since I knew making the song itself would be a behemoth, and he absolutely killed it! I’m super happy and proud with how this turned out and I hope you A) watch it multiple times to see the love and care put into every screen and their placements, B) love it and C) share it baby!
