Love how for the first time, Burr is faster than Alex _except_ for the part where they both agree to give the world to their children. Because it is their children who convinces Alex to wait for it and Burr to move nonstop. Really foreshadows when their character foils flip and how it culminates with Alex throwing away his shot and Burr standing up for something.

@@Thatbendyfan_ that’s my gripe with a lot of musicals actually. A lot of songs with a bunch of verses overlapping at once. I don’t know a lot of musicals by heart, so when I see a new one and a bunch of songs have a bunch of overlapping conflicting parts, it’s so frustrating to listen to and try to catch everything they say
@Ozloz7 ай бұрын
@@superawesomezebra3857 Most overlapping verses will be leitmotifs, so the things they are singing have been sung in the show before that moment. Most good composers do that. For example in Non-stop in Hamilton, everyone is singing a part of their own song. George Washington is singing History Has It’s Eyes On You, Angelica is singing Satisfied, Eliza is singing That Would Be Enough, and Burr is singing Non-Stop. This way you don’t actually have to pick up every word to understand what they’re saying, you pick up one or two words and go “oh that’s what they’re saying”. Good composers will also make sure there are moments where you hear one line over another, for example while one person has a pause for a couple beats someone else keeps singing, that way you can hear them. Another example of a way it’s done differently is in Holy Musical B@tman, during Dark, Sad, Lonely, Night, they start with just one line and you focus on that, then add another line on top and you focus on that, and so on and so on. Also none of the words are anything super important so it’s not a big deal if you miss something, everyone is talking about being lonely and wanting someone else there, and you get point after a couple lines. If composers don’t do either of these things then it’s also possible that the specific information in the verses aren’t super important. For example in Opening Doors from Merrily We Roll Along, after Frank reveals they only have a week or so before opening, everyone starts complaining and their voices overlap, it doesn’t matter that you can’t tell what exactly they’re saying because all you need to know is that they’re upset about the lack of time and preparation. They do this again with all three of them arguing in Old Friends Sorry for the essay

Okay i have to point out that those are also complimentary colors, because while they were rivals, throughout the play their relationship is far more complex than that, and it's clear at many points that they at least want to consider each other friends. They both respect each other greatly and are in many ways two sides of the same coin, but wind up butting heads at important moments leading to some grudges, but ultimately Hamilton in particular seemed, at least in the play i mean, to respect Burr very highly and consider him a dear, if complex, friend. @Myrai382 ай бұрын
@ The harmonies are so beautiful together and they just show so much about the characters with how Burr is slightly ahead for most of the song and then when they go at the same time everything comes together so well. But the song is already long and with the show already being nearly 3 hours they wouldn’t be able to logically keep it in. I love this version a ton but most of the meaning found in it is in the music and not the lyrics which is what you most frequently want to use to convey meaning so the audience will best understand.
@snarf1504Ай бұрын
@@Myrai38It takes less time to sing both of their verses at the same time, though. The version where they sing each part after each other obviously takes longer, but that is okay because the meaning of the text is more accessible to the audience. When the texts are overlapping each other it is harder to follow.
@EverythingTheoristАй бұрын
@snarf1504 I think the point is that if you wanted to include the overlapping verse (for the harmonies) in the final song, you'd have to include the separate verses first (so people can parse the lyrics) AND THEN the overlapping verse. So the song would be extra long and slightly more repetitive.

If people didn't like Lin as Hamilton, then the casting is perfect because it served its purpose. Most of the characters don't like Hamilton either (well, except the ladies) and IMO Lin played him quite well, especially when he fidgets and twitches as waves of genius wash over him and he can't resist it. Maybe that's just Lin lol, but it adds to the character character-wise. As for the vocal quality, Lin's rougher approach and Leslie's smooth voice reflects their upbringing as well, and it is a cool if not just serendipitous detail that really pleasantly tickles my brain. Maybe that's why this song just hits. There's a multitude of contrasts (vocally and in character, among others) that culminates in agreement that someday, their children will make them proud, and I am out of words.

Then, months later, I fell in love with another song and watched the musical again. It's weird, the songs change as much as I do. For example, the last time I watched it was 10 months ago. I was working hard to get my business going and listening to Non-Stop. A month ago, I met a beautiful woman who said I'd be a great father, and then she wanted to be with me. From trying to conquer the world to listening to this... maybe wishing I had a daughter or a son... Hamilton is always there somehow.
