Here is a vid talking about the Shure M92E Phono Cartridge. This classic from the 80's is still widely available and delivers great performance. Plus, you can't beat the value since it costs about as much as a pizza dinner! :) JC

The Ortofon sounded very good, indeed. I may give one of those a whirl sometime. I just couldn't pass up the Shure, though... I found a cartridge alignment gauge on-line that you just print out. Just do search for "Cartridge Alignment Gauge" and it will pop right up. :) JC

I looked at the Ortofon OMP 10 but I've decided to give a high end Audio-Technica a try... I found one for a lot less than the sticker price and I couldn't pass it up. The Shure is great but I'm still curious about what else is out there... I never really liked the sound of the old AT conical stylus cartridges but this one is elliptical, a new thing for AT. It will be interesting to see how they have improved. :) JC

@marcelcruzeiro This is the best cart I've heard for a T4P tonearm. For half-inch, I'd go with the Shure M97xE. I'm expecting one of those today, as a matter of fact. I'll be posting a video about the M97xE. I have not used the AT cart you're talking about but I can say that I have not been impressed with AT... I had one years ago and didn't like it and the two I tried recently had a lot of distortion. I have always been a Shure fan so that's why I am getting another Shure. :) JC

I think the Ortfon 2M Red is the best cart for your money these days. Once you hear one, you'll never want a Shure anything again.

This is an old video... I recommend the Audio-Technica AT92ECD for P-mount these days. I've heard nothing but bad things about Grado so I've never bothered with them at all. Ortofon makes some fantastic carts. My current favorite is their 2m Red but the reviews of the Omega were not good.

Grados are actually really good. I own a Grado Green and for the money it’s hard to beat. I have not heard the 2M red but I have read many reviews that say Grado Green

@Jesus10741 Go with the Shure... It needs a few hours of operation to get broke in but once it is it sounds better than any of the lower end AT carts I've heard. :) JC

@pablo1588 Don't use a p-mount cart if it's a half inch head shell. Get an Audio-Technica AT95E or AT120E instead. :) JC

@pearlmax They are good sounding carts... You can also put a N97xE stylus on them which really makes them sing. :) JC

The better sonic results on the M92E are due to overall better quality control than on the M97xE, which is made in Mexico.

This is pretty much the same cart as the Radio Shack RXP3 that I bought back in the '80s. I couldn't agree more with your evaluation- it's amazing that an economy cart could perform this well. One other "best kept" secrets is the Sanyo Fisher MG-29D. I bought this for a record changer- and it's marvelous! Stylii available include a conical, elliptical, and a 3mil for 78s- the cart is a great multi-purpose option- and it's inexpensive. BTW: The Shure 2mil really stinks on shellac... Just saying.....

@BennysHomeBrewBeer Actually, yours may be the now discontinued next best in line cart from this one. They made several p-mount versions in the 1980's to choose from. :) JC

Shure has always made great sounding cartiges, I've found they realy bring the sound of any record to life, even if you play 78's played with the regular lp stylus (which i would never do now) Unfortunatly I lost the heashell on my turntable. I put it somewhere safe so the cartridge and stylus wouldn't get damaged when I was moving some things about, and now I cant find it. So now I gotta buy a new headshell and catridge and I'll make SHURE I buy shure cartridge.

Yes, they do sound very good! However, I am using a linear tracking TT that takes a P-mount cart... So, my only option is the good ol' M92E. :) JC

@DarkGuitarHero The M92E wouldn't be the best choice for a new cart for that turntable. If you're going to be backcueing I'd suggest an Audio-Technics AT3600 or Shure M44-7. If you're just looking to play records, you could go for an Audio-Technica AT95E or any other elliptical cart. However, if your 500 is sounding good at 4 grams, you could just stay with that. I'd stay away from the LP120... They have lots of issues. :) JC

This thing looks exactly like my first favorite "dj scratch" cartridge by Shure . It's called the "DISCO DUTY DC-40" I was never to this day able to find replacement styli. I was able to buy 2 extra when I found a matched pair in 1991 (blow out sale) and 2 came with it..so when all were gone..that was it. I learned alot of my turnablist skills with this cart..and to this day..I have not gotten a cart was as smooth for scratching..but it is hard on records. Nostalgia only here..not returning .

Hello JC, first, thanks for these great reviews, they helped a lot in choosing my first turntable, I founded a Siemens RW 555. however I am running in some problems, first with the manual cue lever, it just wont lift the arm, but the automatic runs just fine. Then, do you think the M92e would fit in this turntable with a new headshell ? currently running a Shure M72EJ. Cheers from the south hemisphere!

I noticed you said in the review that "If you want better highs and lows, this is not for you". I'm looking for a better cart for my new-to-me Technics SL-L2 table and would like something better than the Technics P24CS it came with, and while I'd like to keep it cheap (it's just my backup table) I would like to get something a bit better. I noticed that the Audiotechnica's offer some decent specs for their T4P's... What would you recommend?

If I heard right, The Shure M92E has been discontinued from Shure for some years ago. So how can I get a replacement for my current Shure M92E. Its not playing well anymore because my stylus is bent. My audio comes and goes because I have to fiddle trying to fiddle resetting the stylus to cartridge connection each time it stops picking up a vibration of the record grooves. Or what cartridge is close to replacing it if I have to resign to buying another type?
@EzeeLinux

Replace it with a new cartridge. Audio-Technica makes a very nice P-mount cart that will just plug in.
@EzeeLinux

LOL... You do that. They are very forgiving and tough little cartridges... You can mount them up on just about any turntable and they will sound great. :) JC

OK, I have q question, if anyone can answer. I have that cartridge. I had to replace the stylus. Since Shure doesn't make cartridges or stylus's I got a generic. I put on "the wall" and got alot of sibilant. I thought the stylus may not be on right. (the needle on mine is pushed up more than the one in the picture.) My cartridge is about 30 years old. should I replace the cartridge or are there other factors that could be causing that?
@EzeeLinux

It's just about impossible to find replacement styli for any Shure cart that is worth a damn these days. My advice would be to replace the cart. LP Gear has a few AT-3472P carts available right now... It's a great alternative to the M-92E.
