Takes time to settle in to a comfortable group of camera settings. Different strokes for different folks. We are spoiled by options, IMO. So you use auto-ISO? Thing about that is the cam doesn’t display what it deems a good value until shutter half-press, unlike other exposure settings. Ever use back button focus, Gerard? “Not amazing AF” - understatement of the year.😊 BTW, appetizing pasta photo. Cheers!

Yeah it’s stupid aye that it won’t show your iso when you half press the shutter when in auto iso! If you ton ON AE lock it will show your iso but locks your exposure like I shown in the video. I just click the play back button to check how high my iso is going

Moving to Fuji from Nikon DSLR's was definitely a steep learning curve lol. And while some stuff of course translated over, getting the Fuji specific settings like film sims and IQ features dialed in took some time. Heck it's been almost two years and I still learned something today haha, so thanks!

Thanks for sharing. I find it fascinating to hear how other photographers shoot. I take most of my photos in AF-C + tracking. I move the camera to place the square to where I want to focus, press and hold the back AF/ON button with my thumb to track and keep the focus on that point. Then I recompose and take a few pictures by pressing the shutter button. I don't release the AF/ON button until I'm finished. Using the back button technique, I can change the composition, I can move, I can change focal length, and even change the camera orientation whilst keeping the subject in focus at all times. Since the latest firmware update, I have started using eye tracking, but only when there is only one static person in the frame. I assigned the video button on the top of the camera to switch it on and off very quickly just in case it goes crazy. You should try it.!

@gerardneedham Great video and I learned a couple things even after almost 2 years with the X-T5. Is there a secret to making the 4:3 ratio default? I've reset it in Q menu and in IQ menu but when I power off then power on, the ratio reverts to 3:2.

Do you tend to overexpose your images with exposure compensation dial? I've been using your presets but for some images there is too much orange color and I have to overexpose to get better looking skin tones. The presets are great, but my images do not have the same look as yours and I thought that it's probably due to White Balance or Exposure. Thanks!
@gerardneedham
@gerardneedham 5 ай бұрын
Yes I do! but I lift the exposure up in Lightroom, and exposure for the skin while shooting I also avoid shooting in high contrast lighting for portraits as this enables me to not lift the shadows up getting a pleasant contrast, this also makes the subject stand out! the presets are on the warmer side also, as most cameras white balance is pretty cool, so adjust your white balance after

Hi Gerard. I've been travelling, and a couple of models were interested in a test shoot, but asked me to contact their agency since they were making all of the decisions regarding test shoots. Just wondering if from your experience if agencies from foreign countries are less likely to be interested in test shoots with someone travelling through? Maybe because they'd prefer to develop relationships with the local photographers. Or are you aware of photographers that have had luck in this way? Just wondering if it's worth trying with other agencies.
@gerardneedham
@gerardneedham 5 ай бұрын
hey man, great question! when traveling its more of a number game, so you have to message/reach out 5X times more to land a shoot! Agencies do what to build a relationship with photographers from test shoot, but they also want a portfolio from new faces. So if the model asked to reach out to their agent, do it! As it sounds like they are keen to shoot!

The reason why your mac doesn’t preview your raw is because you are using compressed raw files. If you set it to uncompressed lossless you will gain the ability to preview.

At 5:20 that pretty much explains the nonsense I see with the latest trend for Fuji gear. I love my Fuji cameras, but it seems everyone wants the dials and retro look which I believe is one reason why they are hard to purchase anymore. Even experienced photographers like yourself make it a point to turn them off and use the command dials. I truly believe Fuji has become more about social image than function (i.e. AF, availability, etc) . For those that can accept it, just go PASM and move on. Again, I like my Fuji's, but like you, I set them up to be more modern and usable -- I could care less about the aesthetic. If not for the Fuji jpg, most would be better served with PASM and/or other brands like Sony (just learn a few settings in lightroom.) After the last 2 years of Fuji games, I've began to move on by transitioning to Sony and don't really miss the "retro" dials that were rarely used. I'll keep my Fuji cams for now, but they've lost me going forward.
