But the side effects weren't good while on or coming down from them, I frequently became anti-social, high irritability, temporary insomnia, loss of apatite, fast beating heart, obsessive thoughts on tasks/goals at hand, and random mood swings, just felt like a different person or like a machine and I lost a lot of friends during that time. You went through all that trouble to do it scientifically yet it turned out to be the most un scientifically valid science test I’ve ever seen. Aside from the obvious (lack of a placebo/blind phase to the test), your stomach contents, what was consumed earlier and what was consumed while the medication was in your upper digestive tract can dramatically change the perceived effects of an oral medication. What bothers me is not that your experiment was poorly planned...it’s that someone with ADHD that’s considering switching to Modafinil as a safer alternative to Amphetamines will see this and be a lot less likely to do so based on the results you got from your half-assed test model.

Alexandr Martynov 400 mg of caffeine (found in about 4 cups of espressos though it can vary depending on brand/shop) is considered safe for your body, and a fairly recent study has shown that drinking 4 cups per day is linked to reduced probability of death from all sources, and reduced probability of catching a few serious illnesses. I won't link you the study because I'm on my phone but it's easy to find on Google as it's pretty "famous", tonnes of media articles published on it that should link you the actual study (Google "4 cups of coffee good for you"). The study is statistical in nature and doesn't provide a biological/chemical answer as to why this is the case. Modafinil may very well be safer, but I'd be wary of calling it such as it is a fairly new substance which means long term effects haven't been studied/recorded. Caffeine however has been consumed for ages and most of the deaths linked to it are from people drinking obscene amounts through energy drinks (that also have shit tonnes of sugar and some other substances). Just because you can o.d on something doesn't mean it isn't safe, in fact most substances have an LD50, even substances that are considered extremely beneficial (example: vitamin C)

Not even remotely useful or properly thought out research. You need to "blind" yourself to the drug (not know if you got the pill or placebo), try eating/drinking properly (stimulants, and that's what modafanil is at the end of the day, a stimulant), extend the test period, etc etc. Sorry, but this is pretty lazy "journalism." I'm not saying you have to do some ridiculously complicated drawn out thing, but this has just about zero control of variables, objectivity, and/or statistical relevance.
@jackmiddleton20808 жыл бұрын
+Samuel Sara I thought the same. We had no substantial evidence because all we could think about was whether or not they were experiencing placebo effects. Then I just wanted to blow my brains out when he did the computer test and performed better the second time. Humans typically perform tests better the second time. That is basically what beating a video game is all about. So again it was stupid. It would have been better if he did the test with the drug first and then came back the next day without the drug. But that is too much effort for the BBC I guess.

+Jack Middleton Frustrating what passes for "journalism" and "research" nowadays. For anyone reading this be careful with your dosage especially if pairing with caffeine. My first time taking Moda I was stupid and misread the mg in a tablet. I took 2 400mg tablets and had about 150 mg of caffeine. That night I just became a completely different person and honestly it was bad. I was doing hard labor and just couldn't stop. I worked past the limits of my coworker who had more than my bodyweight on me in pure muscle. I worked through lunch and topped several productivity records. The worst part wasn't having to call out sick the next day when I woke up and couldn't move because of my back spasming, it was having felt so amazing while at work. I felt better than I ever had in energy and clarity. I dropped a 20 pound part and it was like being in the zone I saw it just slow down and hang there as I plucked it out of the air. It's horrifying how amazing I felt and how it crippled me for days after. Don't overdose and use with large amounts of caffeine (that amount of caffeine was too much for me without my l-theanine anyway)

Just wanted to say, I feel one of the biggest issues with people taking psychoactive anything (nootropics, street drugs, mental health drugs etc.) without guidance from a doctor (or trustworthy person if it's non-rx/street drugs), is we don't know exactly how the drugs will affect us or how to best deal with the psychological changes that occur while under the influence. If someone doesn't know how to cope and adapt (as opposed to resisting and working around) to what can be a very confusing/disorienting/disruptive psychological change, without guidance they're of course going to have a bad run, they have no idea what's going on.

I am very skeptical that you can enhance performance of any kind over the long term without side effects or reducing your capacities later. The body is built and functions around a kind of equilibrium - if you push it too far in one direction, the costs mount in others. Look at steroids: Florence Joyner was able to run faster, but she died very young, probably because of the stresses that steroid use placed on her heart. This is an extreme example, of course, but it is always the case to some degree with drug abuse.

So if you have watched the movie or to series "Limitless" there is a made up drug, like in this case, called NZT that enhance you brain fully. Meaning that you use 100% of your brain for about 24 hours before it wears off. Although that is all fiction, they still thought about the scientific logic behind it and eventually if you use the drug constantly it will eventually kill you. Now, it isn't like one day you just die of od if something. You go through a process of the side effects the drug has. When you use a pill like this your brain may function much better, but your body has to constantly keep up. So when the drug wears off, your body finally gets the chance to catch up, but in the process of that gets much more tired than usually and uses much more energy. If you constantly use the drug, every time it wears off, it basically will have to reach longer to keep up with the brain. And the brain will also be tired. But of course NZT is a much bigger enhancer that doesnt exist so ye..

I get prescribed these on NHS for help with MS fatigue. Been on it, 200mg daily, for almost 4 years. It stopped having effect about a year ago and I’d still need a nap about 6-8 hours after taking the dose. I now have doubled the dosage to 400mg daily. I pop them usually between 6:30 and 7am and by 7:30, I’m ready for my day. I have a toddler so it was very tiring looking after him during lockdown, which is the reason why I felt 200mg didn’t work any longer. Since upping to 400mg, I have more energy to play with him, get chores done around the house, I’m more creative, less aggy & have better sleep at night, usually 6-7 hours. I’m even better at gaming with having faster reaction times and able to focus more. At the weekend, or on days where I have nothing planned or just chilling, I don’t take any so I’m not feeling unsettled like I need to do something all the time, and take CBD oil instead. I took 400mg at 6:50 this morning and can feel it kicking in already (7:20am) as I write this, hence the long reply!

I experimented with this for the first time, taking 200mg of Modafinil first thing in the morning to see if it would help me study for an exam. This is what happened: - After 30mins to kick in, I experienced 4-5 hours of increased cognitive ability, I felt great and was able to retain far more information than I normally would; - After the 5 hour mark, my thoughts started to get 'foggy' and my concentration dipped below its usual level; - I became tired at around 16.00 and had to just rest for an hour; - For most of the day I was clenching my jaw, this got progressively worse throughout the day and continued into the night; - As the day progressed I also became more anxious and irritable, there seemed to be nothing I could do to calm myself; - I managed to get to sleep at 1am, woke up at 5am for 1.5 hours, then back to sleep again until 9am. I had sweated half my bodyweight overnight. Also my teeth hurt from grinding them in my sleep I really want this to work because the first 4-5 hours are great, but the side effects seem to outweigh the positives. I'd be interested to hear about the experiences of others, particularly if you had these issues and managed to overcome them?

+Brion Lebioda Man, people in power, govt or corporate, dream of a safe drug that would make people more productive. Modafinil sounds like creepy "Brave New World" stuff the way it's being pushed so much lately in the media. It's insanely creepy. I'm actually glad to see a reporter that's being honest about how he felt, instead of interviewing some moron in a suit who says it's Manna from Heaven and it lets him work EVEN MORE and be a super dad on top of it. Yeah, that's exactly what the world needs. An over-worked, joyless, anti-depressant dependent populace taking drugs to work even MORE. Like I said, it's fucking creepy. They even tied it into a movie promotion in one report I saw here in the US. Not exactly responsible reporting.

The first day I was awake but moderately anxious with minimal side effects, the second day just gave me a splitting headache and not much else. My metabolism is absolutely killer (never been an ounce overweight and most drugs last for about half the time they're supposed to) as well, I didn't get the euphoria or speediness or any of that shit. I've done more than my share of Adderall and dabbled in methylphenidate and lisdexamfetamine (and other nameless high potency stims lol) as well - to me this was just like getting a good night's sleep.

People now think that the more you think the more you know when the opposite is true. You have to know and see the big picture but the more you experience you have, the more life you let in, the more open your mind the more you really know. The truth is the exact opposite of the way people think now, Search "Truth Contest" and read the top entry. This is truth you can and should check for yourself, truth the evidence says is true. People always fail to comprehend that each brain and neurotransmitter system is different. The one who lacks dopamine might respond extremely well to a drug increasing dopamine levels. The one who already has like to much can induce disaster. I can say that because I am bipolar and I had lots of trial and error to find out a mood stabilizing medication that I and especially my brain can work with. That's also the same reason why there is so much different medications. Each one with a slightly different approach to which neurotransmitter to surpress and which one to stimulate.

Hi. Great docu, but my comment here is: you are brushing your teeth wrong with the electrical toothbrush. You're supposed to slowly move the brush from tooth to tooth, inside and outside. Also: for the headache (which can occur with slightly long term use of modafinil) one needs to take a choline supplement. Let's say after one week.
@an00265 жыл бұрын
I’ve taken this before (I suffer from mild narcolepsy) on top of that I have an under active thyroid so I’m always fatigued and exhausted. After being awake 10 hours in a day I feel like I’ve run a marathon and feel extremely sleepy. These do make a difference, definitely with excessive day time sleepiness. I felt my concentration was better, I hardly yawned and I felt energetic all day. The side effects were horribly though... I’d get crazy headaches, they’d make me want to throw up. I think look half the dose 100mg, and then half of that 50mg at gaps of every 2-5 days. For me even that small dose 1 in 5 days helped me incredibly but I stayed away because I don’t like the effects of medication in the long run.

When I tried aniracetam, aside from the fact that I didn't have a choline source at the time (which is a big no with any acetycholine boosters since it means bad headaches), it worked fine, no hang over or anything, and it worked well and helped me pass my final. Haven't gotten around to testing anymore, since me and my family are super broke, however, my experience with nootropics (smart drugs) aside from that mistake that I knew I shouldn't make, but did anyways, my experience was good. Then again, everyones brain works differently so what helps one may hurt another.

i have narcolepsy and have to take modafinil to stay awake. i'm in the US, and here a one month supply costs `$600 if you aren't diagnosed with narcolepsy or sleep apnea, despite there being numerous other illnesses that it could help. seeing people take it as a ~smart drug~ kind of angers me because that kind of non-medical use is definitely part of the reason why it's so hard for people who need it to get it.
@nal85035 жыл бұрын
I have a chronic disease called aging, for which I drink a lot of water, eat food, and walk around to combat it. Seeing people do those things for the taste or for fun angers me. In other words: You have no point. Whatever you perceive to be the "right" use case is irrelevant when other potential use cases emerge, or rather, always existed. Good luck with your narcolepsy though, hopefully there'll be a more efficient drug that has never been used for any other purpose than to treat narcolepsy. Otherwise you'd make some people very angry.

I truly think the “problem” stems from the strict regulations that are consistently implemented. Add the money involved with all pharmaceutical companies and it’s clear to see... The more laws/rules/regulations you enforce, the more you’ll see/notice all those “breaking” the restrictions. Remove all the damn laws, regulations, etc... create educational experiences &/or studies and let people make their own choices. Good hell! There are plenty of case studies to research the mind blowing effects once everything is legalized and educational tools are readily available along with “centers” to help! Yes, we need more but there is substantial evidence to get us started in the right direction. The problem is the straying from the foundation of laws, etc. & how ridiculous the control they have is! Judging another’s choices isn’t the answer. When is everyone going to decide enough is enough with our current powers that be? Maybe then, everyone can start focusing on more important matters that have no relation to expectations with someone else’s character! I’m so sorry to hear how much your medical needs cost but I think the solution lies beyond the speculative assumptions of our family and friends actions. The only reason anything like this directly affects us is due to the rapid growth of believing that our freedoms are worth loosing in exchange for our security! Nothing should trump our personal rights and freedoms. Period! Hell, if everything wasn’t so damn regulated your meds wouldn’t be $600/month and you wouldn’t give two shits if someone else decides to use it for reasons outside your understanding of its use. Hopefully we get there....someday....

Me too, but I am in the UK. It is so difficult to get it prescribed and I am lucky that our healthcare is free. People use it for passing examinations with barely studying and so on but us with narcolepsy take it to stop ourselves falling asleep whilst walking across a road. It doesn't even help a massive amount. It only just takes the edge of the sleepiness most days... The side effects are gross, nausea, (I am lactose intolerant and so much medication contains lactose), constipation, reducing the pill's effectiveness etc. I wouldn't take it if I had a choice. People who use this without a proper medical reason, are so lazy and selfish.

Also the note of his headache and other issues is in line with dehydration which is a great highway to box your kidneys
